Goronmon··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Also as much as you might like to punish investors (most of whom just have it in their 401k) because you don't like people with money, there are legal protections and the government can't just do something like that without an actual reason.

As much as you might like to defend the wealthy because the only thing you care about is money, regardless of the human cost, doesn't mean that we can't use the law and the government to limit the harm being done to humans.

I know what you are going to say. "Fuck people! I only worship money!" but I think you need to look beyond just the financial aspects of this situation.

Goronmon··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
So vote for Republicans because while the outcomes are worse, at least they aren't pretending they are going to make things better?

You've made it clear why you think people absolutely shouldn't vote for Democrats, but haven't really stated what people should do instead, just left the implication.

Goronmon··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
I'm not sure "make sure kids have food" rises to the level of "perfection" when it comes to measuring society.

But in my opinion if we try and make life comfortable and easy for everybody, it will break the rest of society to try and achieve it.

I think many would argue that a society unwilling to feed or educate children is pretty "broken".

Is willing to make sure kids are fed bad, but making sure that kids aren't physically or sexually abused fine? Or is that also off the table because we don't want to make life too easy for everyone?

Goronmon··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
As for books that haven't fallen apart from being used as intended and merely are no longer desired, my local library generally sells them off at bargain prices.

What happens when the books don't sell?

Goronmon··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Libraries tend to regularly destroy books as well. And they aren't scanning them first either.

Doesn't that make them even worse?

Goronmon··on The August 17 outage, and the work ahead
$1.2 billion of costs on revenue of $1-$2b certainly seems like a big concern.
Goronmon··on AMD's Instinct MI455X: Aiming for the Sun
There are plenty of laymen that think "AI bubble pop" means that "AI" usage will go to 0 and then all of a sudden all these hardware and datacenters related companies are buying will become totally unused and flood the market.
Goronmon··on Microsoft fire idTech team at Id software
Microsoft EEE at its best: gobble up all game studios and then kill them.

"Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" isn't applicable at all in this context though?

Goronmon··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
That threat will probably result in a DOJ investigation into everyone involved until they hit something they think they can prosecute someone for, even if it's not true.
Goronmon··on There are a few things that I look back on as my mistakes in the early days
Though it is interesting how many old-school game developer stories from the employee side can be summarized as "I worked out of college for low pay, long hours and I basically lived at the office with little/no outside personal life."
Goronmon··on Signs you're a dangerous terrorist: using Signal, moving zines
Careful, accurately portraying these people's crimes will likely get you downvoted and flagged, unfortunately. It's sad, but there's likely people here who support what happened.

This type of "you can't downvote me for valid reasons" style of intro to a comment is going to lead to many people downvoting you immediately.

Not many people are going to believe your appeal to "real discussion" when leading with that.

Goronmon··on How Cloudflare responded to the “Copy Fail” Linux vulnerability
If we are taking that attitude why not go all the way?

Titles are standard clickbait.

Goronmon··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
Why do Windows users ignore the faults of Windows?

How many people care about support for Red Alert 2 and OG Xbox controllers on Windows 11 (assuming either of these truly don't work) versus people who care about the ability to play games like Fortnite?

Goronmon··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
And besides, as far as I know (well, maybe I'm missing something?), anti-cheat issues aren’t a fault of Linux itself.

Issues with anti-cheat aren't Linux's fault (the one to blame), but they are a fault (undesired attribute) of Linux.

Goronmon··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
I assume the use of the word "fault" in this context was referring to the "downside" meaning instead of "assign blame" meaning.
Goronmon··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
I haven't tried out Lutris yet as I'm trying to avoid having too many layers of platform dependencies just to get games to run, but I'm sure I will at some point.
Goronmon··on France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech
All games I want to play run very well and mostly the process is just "install -> play".

This is largely true for games running directly through Steam, it can get pretty annoying for games that exist outside Steam.

Especially when you have to do things like apply an ".msi" style patch to a game .

It's doable, but the number of steps and tools you may have to pull in (such as protontricks) does get to be a bit of a pain at times.

Goronmon··on Claude Code is locking people out for hours
Even time doesn't feel like it would provide consistent information.

Take the response on another post about Claude Code.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47664442

This reads like even if you had a rough idea today about what usage might look like, a change deployed tomorrow could have a major impact on usage. And you wouldn't know it until after you were already using it.

...pay for API tokens and adjust your use of CC so that the actions you have it take are worth the cost of the tokens

Do you feel there is enough visibility and stability around the "Prompt -> API token usage" connection to make a reliable estimate as to what using the API may end up costing?

Personally, it feels like paying for Netflix based on "data usage" without having anyway for me to know ahead of time how much data any given episode or movie will end up using, because Netflix is constantly changing the quality/compression/etc on the fly.

Goronmon··on Are We Idiocracy Yet?
You can have a message and point of view, but don't put activism over comedy.

The "joke" in this case is people's reactions to school shootings. And people's reactions haven't changed, so I don't see why the article should change.

It's just so exhausting.

This has some real "The worst thing about school shootings is knowing that The Onion is going to repost that article I personally am tired of seeing" energy to it.

Goronmon··on F-15E jet shot down over Iran
US welfare system seems to contain a lot of fraud, waste, abuse and grift across the board, so this will be a good chance to cleanse the system of fraud.

Taking money from social programs and piling into the military which contains "a lot of fraud, waste, abuse and grift across the board", certainly is a choice. Sort of the opposite of a smart choice, but definitely a choice for sure.

Goronmon··on Roblox is minting teen millionaires
The solution is to give them a taste of better built (specifically competetive) games and they will never like roblox.

In my experience, this doesn't work. The primary reason being that most of their friends are playing Roblox and if they are consuming any content on the internet, much of it at their age is related to Roblox.

Our kids have never been allowed to play, and it still comes up somewhat regularly despite all the various games and consoles they have available.

Goronmon··on Tell HN: YC companies scrape GitHub activity, send spam emails to users
Doesn't YC have some code of conduct or legal/ethical guidelines?

Regardless of any claims of having this, I would say this behavior aligns with what I have seen over the last couple decades. I'm more surprised that other people would expect anything different?

Goronmon··on Tell HN: YC companies scrape GitHub activity, send spam emails to users
Their brand has been associated with hacking-around and gaining advantage via rule breaking for a while.

Yup, this type of behavior is pretty much as I would expect and it's something I've seen since I first started posting here.

Every vehicle came with an electric lighter and plenty of ash trays. One of the more common crafts kids used to do was making ash trays for their parents.
Goronmon··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
It was not immediately clear what legal authority Trump would draw upon to impose such a ban on the private market purchases of houses. Trump did not detail the policy, the form it would take or the legal changes he was seeking from Congress.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The U.S. president was due to sign unspecified executive orders later on Wednesday.

Anyways, I thought that issues with Americans being able to afford things like housing was all a hoax made up by Democrats?

Why craft policies to address a made up issue?

Goronmon··on America's economy looks set to accelerate
Yeah its like when people say they are stockpiling gold in case of some form of economic apocalypse.

I'm not sure what good gold would do you if people start physically fighting each other for food and water.

Goronmon··on Loss32: Let's Build a Win32/Linux

How many game studios were bothering with native Linux clients before Proton became known?

Goronmon··on Valve reveals it’s the architect behind a push to bring Windows games to Arm
Cheating still exists and will always exist in online games.

Sure, but you still have to make a serious attempt or the experience will be terrible for any non-cheaters. Or you just make your game bad enough that no one cares. That's an option too.

Goronmon··on 'No One Lives Forever' turns 25 and you still can't buy it legitimately
I miss that kind of media discovery, our modern always-online world tends to smother serendipity.

I don't really miss the time of having to choose games this way. If you lucked out it was great, but you were also potentially putting down upwards of $50+ bucks in 1995 dollars on a game that you might end up really disliking.
