GoodIntentions··on Obama wants all the info in your smart phone without a Warrant
>> The key consideration for such searches is securing weapons and preventing the suspect from destroying evidence. The weapon concern obviously doesn't exist with cell phones, but the destruction of evidence concern certainly does.

I don't buy that. There is nothing stopping an officer from physically obtaining the phone to preserve its' state pending later search under warrant. The immediate search of a pack/container/whatever for physical threat, I understand. The contents of a phone don't fit this same criteria.

GoodIntentions··on Someone's stealing our identity on Apple's App Store
Their blog says the offender is someplace in "Eastern Europe". I think that C&D would end up being a 300 dollar piece of toilet paper.

Like many other folks are saying, I think a DMCA filing citing infringement against their art assets would be most effective.

GoodIntentions··on 59% of the 'Tuna' Americans Eat Is Not Tuna
Pretty sure almonds are nearly the same amount of protein per ounce as tuna..
GoodIntentions··on Obama administration asks Supreme Court to allow warrantless cellphone searches
>>Hmm, sounds like they were promising more of the same.

>>If your suggestion is voting for an independent, is there a realistic scenario where an independent candidate could get elected in the United States?

GoodIntentions··on You Might Have an Invisible Facebook Account Even if You Never Signed Up
If there was a browser plugin that would surf some random innocuous crap in the background for me, with an eye to messing up the data scrape, I'd install it. ( Fly fishing? sure. Country Line dancing? OK. Fancy goldfish? sign me up. ) A three for one ratio of random to real would make the data set pretty much crap for advertising purposes.

The only drawback, so far as I see, is wasting bandwidth of sites I don't really visit.

GoodIntentions··on Lavabit abruptly shuts down
I was surprised to see Canada green on that map.

We have a great privacy commissioner ( http://www.priv.gc.ca/index_e.asp ) but the office holds no power so far as I can see, and the Canadian government has a pretty solid track record of being obsequiously cooperative with u.s. interests

OT, but that Cotton Crop Blues link is at 6575 views as of now. (19:25 6Aug2013 ) Very curious to see what an HN link does to it.

>>People got hang at Nuremberg for less I would say.

No.

There were people at Nuremberg who richly deserved hanging and didn't get it. The allies went easy on their best new buddy in the impending cold-war. ( Edit to say what motivated this reply in the first place - You can't compare working people to death in camps with SMS fraud. not anyplace close )

GoodIntentions··on An open letter to Jeff Bezos: A contract worker’s take on Amazon.com
I agree that it is nothing any CEO would act on of itself but..

I suspect the point was to put enough personal context into the complaint to provoke sympathy, provoke noise, get it widely read and even hopefully get it across the CEO's desk at some point where the author's thesis will at least fleetingly get considered.

At that point, gathering information to test whether the temp system is a net loss or a net gain could begin.

GoodIntentions··on Why Canada Has No Big Tech Companies
Depends how you answered the questions and what type of border services agent you got.

A former employer of mine had U.S. based employees that were subject experts / trainers on proprietary systems - Written internally, used internally. We had to do training sessions via teleconference after the border services turned our trainer back. Our Legal followed up with border services and was given the requirement that we advertise nationally for someone to fill the training role for a period of i-can't-recall how many weeks then re-apply if not able to fill the role from a hardworking but unemployed fellow Canadian.

It was utter crap. Time we didn't have to look for a person who didn't ( couldn't ) exist seeing as it was a new system, written outside Canada. Trainers had crossed previously to fill similar roles without issue. go figure. We ended up doing it over the phone..

GoodIntentions··on NSA Phone Snooping Cannot Be Challenged in Court, Feds Say
By the same logic, I suppose you could walk into a bank vault, take all the money home, but not really consider it theft until you spend it. Complete BS.

GoodIntentions··on The Art of Getting a 3 Letter Domain Name
I think ( but don't know for certain ) that they can be reversed until the receiving bank disperses the funds. I imagine if you're dealing with enough zeros, all bets are off though.

I'd be interested in a "for sure" answer if anyone knows for certain.

GoodIntentions··on The Art of Getting a 3 Letter Domain Name
If someone had stolen ID _and_ checkbook, it might not have been the person you thought you were dealing with. I don't know if you looked into the winery / called it or whatever, but I'd have wanted some way to establish with fair certainty who I was dealing with beforehand. ( and probably would have accepted a check like you did given the amount. )

A surprising number of people don't know a check can be pulled back out of your account weeks after the deposit. Paypal or credit cards aren't much better. So far as I know using escrow, wire transfer or bank draft are the only "sure" ways payment can't be revoked

GoodIntentions··on The Art of Getting a 3 Letter Domain Name
Three things jump out at me in that post:

1. Using any online 'appraisal service' or what have you as a pricing guideline is not something you can depend on. There have been numerous tools like this and sometimes their results are so wrong it is funny.

2. People who own domains get do get a lot of mail, often of the "let me scam you" variety. Standing out from these is the trick.

3. A good domain name is worthless without good content. Don't pick a bad name, by all means, but what lives at that name is much more important than the name imho.

GoodIntentions··on The NSA slide you haven’t seen
I don't doubt they version things like this, but I do doubt the watermark is easily found. A bit here, a bit there and you can bury a lot of info in a graphic with no one the wiser.

GoodIntentions··on Bolivia leader's jet diverted 'amid Snowden suspicions'
If they truly did interfere with free transit of the head of any state over this, I am surprised.

Shoot downs are not unheard of tho. Your comment made me recall when the Russians took down KAL 007 in the 80s.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Lines_Flight_007

200+ people on that including a member of US government.

GoodIntentions··on Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow
You might have read this already. mebbe not.

"wall Street and the Rise of Hitler"

http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/0945001533

You can probably find it as a pdf someplace too, as it is a pretty old book. Read it and try to see the difference between the US industrialists and German industrialists in the dock at Nueremburg. Same sh*t, different piles imho.

GoodIntentions··on A Dark Room - minimalist text-based game
From your comments you seem to actually be interested, so let me tell you about it from my neo-luddite POV.

I love games ( I actually _pay_ for games I like ). I also run with my browser fairly locked down. If you've made a game like this and want me to take more than 10 seconds on the web page, at the bare minimum have it load _something_ without scripts and without requesting anything from another domain ( this means jquery, google apis etc )

This game is a great example of one I wouldn't look at because it loads nothing until a request to googleapis is enabled and scripting is turned on. Perhaps it is overly judgemental on my part, but I assume that failing to provide _any_ level of graceful degradation in a design indicates a poor effort. It takes 5 minutes to add this to your landing page and will save you a tiny percentage of bounces.

tldr: make sure your landing page loads something. anything. Ideally a short message telling users what awesome things enabling the site scripting does for us.

GoodIntentions··on Alcoholism in Antarctica
This post reminded me of an antarctica blog I stumbled on years ago: http://www.bigdeadplace.com/welcome-to-the-program/

The Q & A bit here ("what are things you wish you brought?") seems to list a fair amount of booze/booze related items. http://www.bigdeadplace.com/ask-an-antarctican-2/

GoodIntentions··on Richard Stallman Inducted Into the 2013 Internet Hall of Fame
>>You have to trust that a hot wheels toy car won't have a secret hidden camera transmitting back to the government

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Kinect/PrivacyandOnlineSafety

Weren't these the guys signing onto prism in what? 2007?

Stallman is extreme in his views. This has always tempered my respect for him. Gotta say though, he seems less extreme and more insightful given recent revelations.

GoodIntentions··on Snowden distributed encrypted copies of NSA docs around the world
+1 insightful. The people doing this aren't worried about personal sacrifice, or they wouldn't be doing it. I think perhaps what they are worried about is their efforts being in vain.
GoodIntentions··on Why Snowden Asked Visitors in Hong Kong to Refrigerate Their Phones
curious. Do you notice decreased battery life if you do this? I would think you would chew through battery like a mofo if you block carrier, but leave the phone on. It's gonna try hard to hit a tower non-stop, I expect.
GoodIntentions··on US 'disappointed' with Hong Kong, asks Latin American countries to stop Snowden
It's passed already? thirty hours of Warcraft a week after working to pay your share of taxes is the new bread and circuses.
GoodIntentions··on US 'disappointed' with Hong Kong, asks Latin American countries to stop Snowden
Well, yeah. What else would be reasonable, progressive state do? Exactly what the US wants.

I think the UK and Canada have spoiled the USA to the point where a foreign entity acting as tho they had sovereignty offends and confuses.
