Good4boothee··on Solving Factorio Quality
It was discussed here at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49674451 . Frankly I was sure this is the dupe, just based by the title.
Good4boothee··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
As long as mods are human volunteers, can they ever keep up with scale of reddit? I regularly see submissions (on old.reddit's /r/all) that got to 10k+ upvotes and 200+ comments in hour or two before it was taken down for breaking given subredit rules.
Good4boothee··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent
Maybe we will skip few steps and add RGB lights to all GPU/NPU devices, that turn red when running "unaligned" code/model.
Good4boothee··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
It would be trivial for spammers to at least use different pattern. I am afraid they keep to the default, cause real users do the same. I am not surprised, the chance of colliding with other user login, on registration, on such old and popular website is high.
Good4boothee··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
If it isn't human landing on Moon/Mars then I can wait for weekly space news write-up on Ars Technica.
Good4boothee··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
29 v2 satellites (around 4 times lighter than v3)
Good4boothee··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
I think SpinLaunch is great example. They were actually able to fund and make a working prototype, tested it, but still decided it is not practical after all, before pivoting to production of knockoff Starlink-like satellites.
Good4boothee··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
I don't know why people are so fixated on heating as some kind of gotcha. If we already assumed magical 16km^2 solar array, then we can also assume matching size radiator, with heatpumps. If ISS can do it, then there is no technical issue with doing it on bigger scale. It "only" doesn't make any sense from financial viewpoint, terrestrial datacenters beat it in every way.

NVidia's recent support for warm (45 °C) water cooling for their new racks probably had more impact on price of compute than than space servers will ever have.

Good4boothee··on People Training OpenAI's AI Fired for Using AI to Train the AI
Why exactly it is clickbaity? It makes perfect sense to me, I understand title as: people told not use AI fired for using AI - without any need for additional context. Mechanical Turk was shut down for exactly same reason, it was always a race to the bottom and using LLMs was cheaper than even third world gig workers. Verifying if task were done by humans is probably harder than doing them in the first place.
Good4boothee··on Why does mathmain need an encrypted loader?
It will take even longer when they discover supply chain attacks on compilers. I mean they where mostly theoretical so far but that might change any day now.
Good4boothee··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
It has more comments than points, IFAIK that causes flamewar suppression to kick in and take it off the frontpage. It would be great for submission to include year in title when it matters but I doubt it can be reliably automated.
Good4boothee··on AI chatbots give wrong answers to financial queries 'most of the time'
To be fair those are rookie numbers. Nothing says "we value your privacy" as GDPR cookie banner with 1k+ "partners" list.
Good4boothee··on Devastated father says his 9-year-old son spent $118,000 on YouTube ads
If I remember correctly I got a call from GMG, 15 years ago, to confirm a purchase of … $15 game key. Maybe Google Ads have such great deal with card acquirers they don't care about fraud/chargeback rate. Or it is the other way around, the amount of fraudulent spending is so high they don't even try fighting it.

> maybe I just don't understand how world operates Amazon decided friction during purchase is more costly than asking for CVV/CVC. For better or worse (like in case of Ford Pinto) corporations can count their money.

Good4boothee··on Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing
All previous similar issues got hand waved with "Mozilla has to make money somehow". I am afraid one day remaining users will decide that Chromium based browsers provide a better experience in most use cases, and now have same privacy guarantees as Firefox. Looking at market share maybe that had already happened and pragmatism won over ideology, and we will all suffer the consequences of such monoculture.
Good4boothee··on Java 27
Not a fan of JEP-531, looks the repeat of Optional. Are we really so afraid of extending syntax that we are going to add a class instead of field modifier?

    private static final Logger log = Logger.getLogger(Whatever.class);
This was already verbose enough that Lombok has @Log4j for it, adding `lazy` keyword in front of `final` won't make it any worse.
Good4boothee··on Java 27
I mean, thanks to crazy data center over-investment there is real chance that Oracle will need to sell some of their assets. Somehow I can't imagine many potential buyers that would be a good custodian of Java.
Good4boothee··on Python sets and dictionaries can have quadratic-time performance
> but unless you're defending against some sort of denial of service attack, in practice it rarely matters.

That "rarely" contains most sites/webservices. Before programming languages started defending against it by applying randomization (and sometimes replacing degraded maps/buckets with treemaps) it was a real threat. I remember people were able to trigger DoS either by specially crafted query string params or HTTP headers. After all both are shoved into some kind of map by frameworks, before request is even passed to application code.

Good4boothee··on Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again?
How does handling support tickets/bugs work with such approach? If LLM sometimes can't handle it - do I have to beg it to keep trying, as humans are no longer an viable fallback?
Good4boothee··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
> "But they can't possibly review every ad before publishing" they say.

That defense doesn't work either way as they (and Facebook) also reject manual reports from users.

Good4boothee··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
Endless stream of "Your review was removed - place was closed down" is a interesting reward for reviewing places. I still wonder how can a beach just stop existing.
Good4boothee··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Will it ever work until a TPM like module is directly integrated into camera sensor? Older attempts of Nikon and Canon got broken, same had happened with C2PA implementation for Android - if it gets anywhere close to CPU it is insecure.
Good4boothee··on X sends in the lawyers to shut down open source project
Main discussion at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49437283

And I still can't go over how this title looks like draft version with placeholder, published a bit too fast. How could anyone thing a single letter is good choice for an company/service name?

Good4boothee··on The August 17 outage
I am surprised they didn't rollback their change from 2019 when they included up to 5 private repos in free plan. Before that you had to pay to keep your code from being publicly visible.
Good4boothee··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
Did it also give you a tip to "log in to your usual Wifi network"? I have a feeling all large corps let their heuristics run wild with little to none supervison.
Good4boothee··on My Ten Years in No Man's Sky
That is a lot more Star Citizen players than I expected.

Also that Factorio chart is weird: https://steamdb.info/app/427520/charts/#max . I don't think I even saw another game with such steady player count. It is horizontal line after 1.0 to DLC release, and after DLC to present.

Good4boothee··on Online clinics and influencers are promoting Cialis as a longevity drug
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ototoxic_medication#Other_exam... has some sources. Worth noting NSAIDs like aspirin are also listed there.
Good4boothee··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
My favorites are: exclusive, historically, pollution control, systemic. There had to be an absurd amount of false positives but I doubt they care when they are anti-science in general.
Good4boothee··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Isn't 50TB just 6 years of videos, in even the best case (1GB/h)?
Good4boothee··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
I dread the day YT finally decides it is cost effective to embed ads directly in video stream. I think Twitch is/was experimenting with it.
Good4boothee··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Isn't that effort totally redundant? As in - plenty of people are already filling entire internet with slop for SEO purposes? And LLM slop by default is a mix of facts with few plausible but made up facts - it might be harder to craft such perfect poison on purpose.
