Golfkid2Gadfly··on A telescope fan sabotaged an astronomy forum. He ended up in prison (2018)
He wanted the website dead, he essentially put a hit out on the website, just without any monetary rewards and no follow up. He did this because his was upset at the moderators for not tolerating his inappropriate behavior. While it doesn’t deal with murder, it’s like some news articles you read about people posting on Craigslist to have someone take out their ex, for which they get prison time.
Golfkid2Gadfly··on How does a relational database work? (2017)
Very good indeed, Quite the explanation, the storage part would be an interesting thing to see, for instance in SQLite, what is this binary file created in the filesystem, or how is it’s data organized.
Golfkid2Gadfly··on Let’s Talk About Capacitor Failure
After a recent problem with failures of electrolytics, after a overhaul that included changing all electrolytics, the problem was tracked to stock storage. The manufactures specify a 2 year shelf life, but advised this could be extended by regularly charging the capacitors.
Golfkid2Gadfly··on Why Wolfram Tech Isn’t Open Source
Because, open source is more about intellectual property rights, than about architecture and control. From the outside looking in, it appears that you have made some decisions made on some bad assumptions of what open source software has to be. I could argue your points one by one, but I think it’s more important to address the key factor here: The market is inherently distrustful of closed technology systems.

Golfkid2Gadfly··on FBI accuses wealthy parents in college-entrance bribery scheme
The real scandal is how many kid of congress people get into good schools, not because they're deserving nor because of bribes, but b/c the schools figure they might mifgt need a favor sometime so will take a moron
Golfkid2Gadfly··on The Tragedy of Baltimore
There is a painful but telling postscript to the excellent article about the tragedy of crime in Baltimore and the ineffectiveness if not obliviousness of the city's mayor to stop it. Last night, March 11, during the three hours between 6 and 9 p.m. in Baltimore, four people were shot. This evening, March 12, within 24 hours of these shootings, Baltimore's Mayor, Catherine Pugh, is hosting a birthday party for herself and asking attendees for $6,000 for her re-election. What more is there to say!
Golfkid2Gadfly··on A world of hurt after GoDaddy, Apple, and Google misissue 1M certificates
What an incredible non-story burying an actual real and terrifying story.

The crux of this entire issue is a company known as Dark Matter, which is essentially a UAE state sponsored company, potentially getting a root CA trusted by Mozilla.

It's highly suspected that Dark Matter is working on behalf of the UAE to get a root trusted certificate in order to spy on encrypted traffic at their will. Everyone involved in this decision is at least suspect of this if not actively seeking a way to thwart Dark Matter.

Mozilla threw the book at them by giving them this technical hurdle about their 63-bit generated serial numbers - which turned out to be something that a lot of other (far more reputable) vendors also happened to have this issue.

Should it get fixed? Ya, absolutely.

Is it nearly as big of a deal as giving a company like Dark Matter, who works on behalf of the UAE, the ability to decrypt HTTPS communication? Not even close - this is far more scarier, and much more of a security threat to you and me. It's pretty disappointing that this is the story that arstechnica runs with instead of the far more critical one.

The measure of what makes a trustworthy CA are things like organizational competency and technical procedures. These are things that state level actors easily succeed in. There is no real measure in place for motives and morals for state level actors. That should be the terrifying part of this story - anyone arguing about the entropy of 63 or 64 bit is simply missing the forest for the trees in this argument.

Golfkid2Gadfly··on Weekend ‘catch-up sleep’ is a lie
No amount of sleep will make you feel well if your entire life is economically and, therefore, emotionally stressed because your country does not care about you. Provide affordable health care, affordable quality day care, living wages, and housing security, and people will sleep like babies all the time. America will be the richer.
Golfkid2Gadfly··on Nadella: Microsoft will sell war tech to democracies to “protect freedoms”
A lot of the “don’t want to work on killing people” rhetoric is arguably a bit naive. First, sometimes governments legitimately need to use weapons to defend us, and they don’t grow on trees. More relevant to big tech specifically, some of the technologies (facial recognition, AR etc.) can legitimately claim to help improve targeting (and thus reduce chances of killing innocent bystanders). It’s rarely black and white. At the end of the day, if you are an employee who (quite legitimately) is uncomfortable with it, is it ok to petition company should stop, as opposed to simply taking your labor elsewhere?
Golfkid2Gadfly··on Taxing Uber and Lyft rides is L.A's latest plan to free up congested roads
The headline is a lie. This is all about raising money to pad their pensions.
