GloriousKoji··on Lessons from 863 episodes of This American Life
I'll bite. In the limitations of my mortal life with it's predestined total allocated time for recorded media there's an infinite amount of high quality content. Savoring an expensive meal is just a way to get maximum value out of it but with endless cheap amounts why not devour it to my hearts content? Quality over quantity but what choice does one make when it's both?

Many of these stories have a small narrative arc with very direct emotions it means to invoke. A feeling of nostalgia, of happiness, of sadness, or of anxiety to name a few. Even at a faster speed it will make me think and make me laugh. It's not a work of profound art that I need to stop and contemplate. It's not a comedian's joke with precise timing.

In the end it is just audio entertainment. Episodic entertainment not freed from the shackles of churn, or the temptation to fabricate results for a good story. There's not much grand detail for my ears to wander and focus on the way my eyes would wander over paint on a canvas or a room filed with light and sound.

GloriousKoji··on The hamburger-menu icon today: Is it recognizable?
I've seen too many variants of icons for "general" menu. Three bars, three dots, square, square in square, tall rectangle, gear, company logo and probably a few more.

And if we want to focus on just three bars let's not leave out the skeuomorphism trend where three bars meant the "grip" area, something to use to rearrange items or windows.

GloriousKoji··on Benzene at 200
I want a better list than the IARC because their Group 1 has substances like benzine and asbestos along side things like Alcoholic beverages, Chinese-style Salted fish and processed meat.
GloriousKoji··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
Ever since the death of WinForms and Cocoa we've moved away from apps having a unified visual experience on an OS to apps pushing their own consistent theme across platforms. A big contrast between app and OS theme in recent times was when apps offered Dark Mode before it became an OS wide setting.
GloriousKoji··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
If it was modernized a little, I think I would enjoy needing to tap a RFID hanko to my phone to sign for digital delivery.
GloriousKoji··on A South Korean grand master on the art of the perfect soy sauce
I grew up on kikkoman, view it as the soy sauce equivalent of Heinz ketchup or Best Foods/Hellmans mayonnaise and still cook with it all the time. But after tasting a wide variety of soy sauce I would describe kikkoman's profile as salty, metallic and stout-beer like. The fancier soy sauces seem less salty (despite similar amounts of sodium) and can have varying notes of oyster sauce, seafood, sweetness, coffee, molasses and MSG.
GloriousKoji··on The Beauty of Having a Pi-Hole (2024)
I recommend against the Pi Zero. Once you add in the cost of the microUSB to USB-OTG adapter and the ethernet USB adapter you might as well buy a 3B or 4. Price aside it adds an extra mechanical point of failure as microUSB is not very robust.
GloriousKoji··on Firefox tab groups are here
> What happens when 4,500 people ask for the same feature? At Firefox, we build it.

That's allegedly less people asking for the feature than the tabs I have open or 0.0028% of the user base. I don't believe it.

GloriousKoji··on Japanese scientists create new plastic that dissolves in saltwater overnight
If it's been compromised then the whole thing just melts away.
GloriousKoji··on The belay test and the modern American climbing gym
> when lead belaying, you need to pay out rope, which means disengaging the auto brake. If you do this buy holding the handle

What the hell are they teaching kids these days. I've NEVER needed to hold the handle on a grigri unless I'm trying to lower something. The correct technique is hold the cam down with your thumb leaving three to four fingers in contact with the rope at all time. The left hand is used to pull rope through the girgri to give rope to the climber, the climber already has to pull up a bunch of rope through a maze of carabiners and don't need the extra work of trying to pull it through a grigri.

GloriousKoji··on The Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine

GloriousKoji··on An artist who trained rats to trade in foreign-exchange markets (2014)
This is quite neat. They translate market numbers into tones and the rats make selections on what they think the next tone will be. I would say it's actual speculation and not random dart throwing like the crypto trading hamster or stock picking goldfish we've seen in the recent years.

GloriousKoji··on Raspberry Pi Pico 2, our new $5 microcontroller board, on sale now
I understand all the reason why but I'm still disappointed with the USB 1.1 controller instead of a USB2.0
GloriousKoji··on Why do strawberries seldom live up to their promise?
Driscolls is absolute garbage in my opinion. They always look pretty and are ubiquitous in many major markets but the taste has always been lacking.

The best strawberries in the Bay Area are from the Japanese-American farms. They're not beholden to the "Big Ag" lab grown berries Driscolls and actually taste good but they're extremely seasonal and sometimes hard to find.

GloriousKoji··on Raspberry Pi gets a serious competitor as Particle unveils its 5G-capable SBC
I think it's obscure enough. You don't really combine fruit, an irrational number and electronics that often. Unlike say the combination of fruit and a type of baked good.
GloriousKoji··on Amazon's AI chatbot Rufus is now live for all US customers
After you ask the question and wait way too long to generate an AI response there's a "Show related answers" link which works like the old search. So it's not completely gone just yet.
GloriousKoji··on Launch HN: Overwatch (YC S22): OSINT platform for cyber and fraud risk
But they still would need to watch our for the even more litigious Apple Corp.
GloriousKoji··on Whiteboard interviews are a test of obedience, not intelligence
I'm all for hiring people who can figure things out and know how to figure things out. I'm not blind to the fact people will google and copy-paste-modify stackoverflow example code and don't have strong issue against hiring someone who would work that way.

So my simple whiteboard interview question started as "Print the numbers from 1 to 10" but then I had a few candidates that would just write the numbers out on the board.

Since it happened more than once I figured it was a me problem so I became more specific with "Write code to print the numbers from 1 to 10". But then one one candidate would out dumb me and write 10 lines of print statements.

So I thought it would be clever to force a loop of with a really large number: "Write code to print the numbers from 1 to 1 million." but I had one candidate who started to write out a bunch print statements and I had to stop him.

The latest iteration is "Using a for loop to print the numbers from 1 to 1 million putting one number per line." I usually get blank stares. It's either they think it's some sort of trick question or they don't know how to do it. One time I saw an implementation using an if statement to skip 0 and an extra print for the last 1000000.

The solution to that was to tell HR to let me phone interview them for 10 minutes before brining them onsite.

GloriousKoji··on Sir, there's a cat in your mirror dimension
There's a magical math operation called DCT (discreet cosine transformation) which can turns things into dust (frequency domain) and back (spatial domain). So you DCT a woman and you get woman-dust. If you DCT the woman-dust you get the woman back.

So what you do is DCT a cat to get cat-dust and sprinkle it on the woman. It's hard to see the cat-dust but if you look really closely you can see it (upper left corner of the image). We now have a dusty woman.

Then you DCT the dusty woman and get a dusty cat! Look in the upper left and you can see the woman-dust. Apply the DCT again to this image and we're back to the dusty woman.

Just apply DCT all day long to swap between a dusty cat and a dusty woman!

You must be wondering why does this work? It's due to the properties of dust and human perception. When we DCT the woman and cat you'll notice most of the dust is in the upper left corner. That's where all the heavy dust is. It's fine to lose the lighter dust further out or even add more dust out there since most of the weight is in the upper left, the DCT will get you close enough.

GloriousKoji··on Texas hailstorm damages solar panels at 350-MW farm
That one bankrupt US solar cell company the US government loaned half a billion dollars to (Solyndra) made solar panels that were full of silicone oil.
GloriousKoji··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
I live in the Bay Area California and get electricity from PG&E. I use a minimal amount of electricity and I paid 43 cents/kWh last month. Gas from Costco is $4/gal right now. I have a plugin-hybrid which does 4miles/kwh and 45mpg or in terms of money: 9.3miles/$ on electricity and 11.25gas-miles/$ on gasoline.

But maybe you don't actually care about fuel efficiency, then you have an argument that it's cheaper to fuel a Tesla Model 3 instead of a BMW M3.

GloriousKoji··on The wealthy are cutting the line at the airport, Disney World and ski resorts

GloriousKoji··on The first human received an implant from Neuralink yesterday
I'd like to point you to the wikipedia article of Werner Forssmann, who performed the first cardiac catheterization. Using himself as the test subject. And more.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werner_Forssmann

> He ignored his department chief and persuaded the operating-room nurse in charge of the sterile supplies, Gerda Ditzen, to assist him. She agreed, but only on the promise that he would do it on her rather than on himself. However, Forssmann tricked her by restraining her to the operating table and pretending to locally anaesthetise and cut her arm whilst actually doing it on himself. He anesthetized his own lower arm in the cubital region and inserted a urinary catheter into his antecubital vein, threading it partly along before releasing Ditzen (who at this point realised the catheter was not in her arm) and telling her to call the X-ray department. They walked some distance to the X-ray department on the floor below where under the guidance of a fluoroscope he advanced the catheter the full 60 cm into his right ventricular cavity. This was then recorded on X-Ray film showing the catheter lying in his right atrium.

GloriousKoji··on Building an e-ink picture frame that displays an iCloud photo album
I've been using icloudpd to get photos off of icloud. It took a while the first time but after that I set it up to only download the latest 500 photos (total number downloaded is usually way under) and run it every few months.

GloriousKoji··on Best Pens for 2024: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens
I have a Fischer CAP-O-MATIC space pen which I've have longer than all of the cars I've owned. I think I bought some time around 1996. It hasn't been used frequent enough to need a refill but it's never failed to write. The only problem is a small bit of ink will crust up on the tip which you can wipe off or just accept a dot where you first placed the pen down on paper.
GloriousKoji··on A KDE Plasma theme that aims to replicate the look and feel of Windows 7
You have to go through archives to find them now but Microsoft used to publish reports on all their usability studies and it really gave me the sense of thoughtful and useful design of their UI elements. My favorite is the mouse ballistics https://web.archive.org/web/20110623221617/http://msdn.micro...

Saddly it seems like the latest trend is just to make things new and trendy with junk like rounded corners, low contrast flat colors and no delineation or highlighting for distinct elements.
