GlickWick··on macOS 27 is so buggy
It's in AAA games too. For example, Diablo 4 has incredibly degraded. Basic features are often broken, like dungeon exits sending you to the right locations, UI interfaces having things that can't be clicked under certain circumstances, unlockable season abilities simply not working, etc
GlickWick··on America.gov
Yes. He's quite fond of debunked election fraud claims, for example: https://www.reuters.com/world/us/elon-musk-delivers-cash-con...

He also continuously claimed DOGE actually saved taxpayers money when it objectively did not.

Elon did some great things, like bringing EVs back into public consciousness, and SpaceX really did push the aerospace industry back into research/discovery mode. However, his behavior on social media and in the political sphere has been unfortunately quite, and I emphasize "quite" here, horrible.

This is just the cycle. If the OpenAI offerings are better and cheaper, people will shift there and then those discounts that made it such a deal will evaporate. Anthropic or someone else will entice people back with the discounts.

The whole thing is getting ridiculous.

GlickWick··on Claude Code May–August 2026 weekly limits promotion
The cost and knowledge required to do that is not viable for the average consumer. Same reason the whole OpenClaw thing imploded.
GlickWick··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
For sure. The difference is that they've made a number of similar suspect changes to Grok on X. Like that weird couple of hours where it would only talk about white genocide in South Africa no matter how you prompted it.

Everyone makes mistakes, especially with frontier models. The stuff with Grok shows that the person running the show has a pretty transparent agenda that the company isn't willing to push back on a bit for safety.

It's true, but I do worry about governance when it comes to these models. That shows a surprising lack of discipline in their deployment pipeline.

There's always been "politics" embedded in this tech discussion forum. Generally you shouldn't discuss politics for politics sake, but if someone's politics are intersecting with their product (which is Musk's entire MO), of course people will have thoughts.

Besides, if Musk embeds his politics into everything he does, it's fair game to discuss his merits in that arena.

I remain eternally grateful that HN's developers created an indicator that an account was created very recently.

For those not aware, look for the green name highlight.

GlickWick··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
There's a difference between discussing our impact on the environment vs. the silly "lol nature will outlive us" stuff, which contributes nothing.
GlickWick··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
My point is the whole "nature existed and will continue to exist" thing is honestly trite. Nature created us, we're just another output in the universal system. There's no real point behind the whole statement that nature will exist without us, and it contributes nothing to any discussion besides unnecessary smugness.
GlickWick··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
They will if it means they stop existing
GlickWick··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
I see this a lot, and I think it's sort of naive. Nature itself is doomed due to the way the universe works. It's also far more brutal and arbitrary than we could imagine being. The only way to even have a chance at avoiding the doom that "nature" is facing is for something to evolve that can manipulate and forestall this inevitability.

I don't know if humanity is what can do that, and likely nobody knows. But nature is not going to survive either once you broaden the time horizon a bit.

GlickWick··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
My guess has always been the delicate balance of perception. Nukes are (rightfully) perceived to be beyond the basic destruction we've come to expect of war. They're a tool for annihilation. If you use them offensively the rest of the world will become so afraid of you that they'll nuke you so you can't nuke them. Israel isn't strong enough to entertain the idea that they could survive this.
GlickWick··on Why DNA damage from smoking and UV rays cause cancer in some but not others
I don't think it's that simple, and making it seem that way is counter-productive towards understanding what we should/shouldn't be doing.

There's no anti-sun obsession, either. Sunscreen isn't anti-sun, and people are well aware that Vitamin D synthesis is an issue in farther northern/southern latitudes. There's definitely an increased recognition scientifically that excessive sun is extremely bad, though.

GlickWick··on 3D Pinball for Windows (1995)
Definitely. Looking at the code it weirdly changes ball accel, which is not how nudging works in actual pinball.

GlickWick··on Why DNA damage from smoking and UV rays cause cancer in some but not others
Definitely not. Vitamin D takes a while to synthesize and build up. A quick fix like this isn't possible.

Trade is funding.

I’m sorry but this is a perfect example of what the person above criticized but in reverse. Come on now.

China’s youth unemployment rate is 15%, and that’s likely heavily astroturfed to look lower than it is. Even 15% though is terrifying for a mature economy.

GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Nobody is refusing to acknowledge our role in destabilizing things. This is a thread about why the US might be afraid of an also bad-actor rival funding a huge proxy war against it controlling major technology.
GlickWick··on Startup founders urge Trump not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
No, we are in the process of an exit. This takes time
GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
I don’t. I do read major reputed economists though, and they are not exactly bullish on China.

Don’t create fictional versions of the people you argue with. This is the second time in a span of 10 minutes that you’ve done it. It completely undermines any attempt to discuss something, and drops your integrity to zero.

GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Yeah, the US is not an incredible actor, but China is funding the most brutal war in modern history (the invasion of Ukraine) in order to provide a smokescreen for their own invasion.
GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
The US is building a Taiwan invasion fleet?
GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Taiwan, while simultaneously preparing an invasion fleet trained to stop US and EU attempts at a rescue.
GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
I'm not the "hive mind" of HN or whatever. Individuals hold unique opinions.

Yes, China is a rival. No, they have not won. Their economy is in a lot of trouble, likely far worse than the shape of the US's currently. That situation may accelerate a hot war though, as has historically been the case globally.

GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
The main actors threatening (and delivering) a hot war are China, and by proxy, Russia. The Ukraine war is absolutely and transparently enabled by China, who is also trying to actively destabilize the EU and the US in order to make its conquest of Taiwan more likely.

Yes, the US has an idiot in charge who is threatening these things in response, too. However, unlike China, the electorate does not support him. His election is also almost certainly due to aggressive campaigns to destabilize the US internally for this exact purpose.

GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
My argument is that a major world power is pushing towards global conflict by simultaneously funding the conquest of Ukraine while building its own invasion fleet for Taiwan. Allowing them to also destabilize us internally is not exactly a good idea.
GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
I think the major destabilizing force is the country that has been building the infrastructure for a hot war over Taiwan for the last decade while simultaneously blatantly funding the conquest of Ukraine.

The US stupidly withdrawing from the world stage is definitely making this worse, of course, but it is not the catalyst. It's unfortunately a very likely side effect of a social media campaign by the same actor to make said hot war easier to win.

GlickWick··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
I do care.

It's an unfortunate truth that we're exiting a global peace era and entering one of (hopefully just...) implied conflict. Our biggest geopolitical rival that's been threatening a hot war also distilling the things we build is not a good thing.

Trump is a huge self-own by our electorate sadly, but being concerned about a conflict between China and the US is a very bi-partisan concern for good reason.

GlickWick··on Critical Minerals: Reducing U.S. import reliance with substitution and recycling
Rational or not, they're building warships and an invasion fleet, along with the ability to stifle any US attempt to stop them. This is not the action of someone hoping for a slow victory.

The person at the top of the chain was asking why everyone is preparing for war. This behavior from China is why. It predates any of the Greenland Trump idiocy, too.
