GirlsCanCode··on Microsoft Launches Free AV1 Video Codec
Well, there's Free as in Speech, and Free as in Beer. (And there are sub-categories, like "Royalty Free" and the ability to use it without being sued for patent infringement)
GirlsCanCode··on How I Faked My Way to the Top of Paris Fashion Week [video]
Yes. That's exactly what David Hampton, the subject of the play and film "Six Degrees of Separation" relied on.

GirlsCanCode··on Same-sex mice genetically engineered to have babies
Cloning involves only one parent. This is genetic material from two parents of the same sex.
GirlsCanCode··on [dead]
Wow! The brilliant minds here fooled by a ridiculous April Fool's story.
GirlsCanCode··on Justice Dept. Revives Push to Mandate a Way to Unlock Phones
Obama's Whitehouse? You mean the one that had the NSA spy on all of us?
GirlsCanCode··on [dead]
It's OK, so have I! (And here, too, where I've been shadowbanned.) He really doesn't like female voices.
GirlsCanCode··on Retrotechtacular: FAX as a Service in 1984
I 3D print a lot and I don't own a printer. I don't think the comparison is sound.
GirlsCanCode··on Tech Jobs, Cheaper Housing: The New Silicon Cities
He forgot Beersheva! There's a city with a good start-up scene and a little cheaper than Tel Aviv.
GirlsCanCode··on Ask HN: How often women read HN? Participate?
Every day.
GirlsCanCode··on The Art of Making a Nixie Tube [video]
There's no vacuum in a Nixie Tube!

That being said, it would be nice if classic tubes of yesteryear can be remade efficiently. Especially for antique radio enthusiasts.

GirlsCanCode··on Two years spent spamming spammers back
Spam doesn't bother me anymore, but unsolicited phone calls do. The majority of phone calls that come in are not legitimate.
GirlsCanCode··on Ever wondered how many open FTP servers there are?
I can see having an open anonymous FTP that was read-only as a way of serving some files that needed to be downloaded and didn't contain any sensitive information. It's no different from providing a URL to them.

Or even a write-only one so people could deposit data.

The only real problem is a read-write one where people can use it to exchange information.

GirlsCanCode··on Tesla Wins Contract to Help Power the California Grid
That's 99% true, but Southern California also has periods of time when there's too much _solar_ power and they need to take some solar systems off-line!

(See http://www.vox.com/2016/4/8/11376196/california-grid-expansi...)

This may alleviate that problem

GirlsCanCode··on The Correct Way to Validate Email Addresses
I had a .to domain for a while, and I had an email address "firstname@firstname.to" where firstname is my first name. I wanted to use it when I needed to give out emails causally, like if someone from Church or some other group wanted my email.

I gave up on it, not because of computer validation but because of stupid people! Nobody would "get" the .to domain and they'd always think there should be a .com or .gmail.com on the end of it. Especially older people.

So I gave it up.

GirlsCanCode··on NSA Hacked French President’s House
This is exactly what American intelligence shoukd do: gather intelligence from other countries. It's when they spy on their own citizens that I get a little upset.
GirlsCanCode··on In defence of Douglas Crockford
I'm a woman with an EE degree. I hate non-tech "women" who go to conferences that have no real interest in (like Pycon, Ms. Richards) just to push some wacky agenda.

These "women" aren't making it easier for real girls in real engineering programs.
