GiorgioG··on Elon Musk's Demolition Crew
> Americans have the some of the cheapest housing and highest salaries in the world and look around and cry foul.

I must be living in a different America then.

GiorgioG··on Elon Musk's Demolition Crew
> I've learned the hard way that many people in this country do NOT actually care about democracy.

Our democracy has been eroding for decades. Congress collects paychecks while gridlocking progress, even on bipartisan issues that could help ordinary citizens. Super PACs and "campaign contributions" (aka bribes) ensure the wealthy control both parties. Democrats and Republicans both spend recklessly and divide the nation. Democrats won't admit it, but their approach has driven half the country to prefer what the Republicans have become: essentially a cult.

GiorgioG··on Reasons Not to Refactor
Does anyone really get time to refactor anything these days? Seems like (at least where I'm at), everything is go-go-go, feature work.
GiorgioG··on Apple Invites
Interesting, I've never gotten annoyed by my Android-loving friends/family. Even when I tried switching to Android nobody gave me static.
GiorgioG··on Personal Software
> Software can now adapt to you, not the other way around. Better yet, AI is making it possible for anyone, not just developers, to create single-use or custom applications.

Yeah, because that wouldn't be a customer service / troubleshooting nightmare.

> But within the next decade, millions of people will be able to create software. Designers, marketers, product mangers, and others will be the first.

Hahaha - clearly the author is young. All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.

GiorgioG··on Apple Invites
The self-entitlement is getting old. Nobody's forcing you to switch platforms. If your Apple-friends send you an invite, you will not be shunned from the event. Yes even the uncool non-Apple users will be allowed to participate in said invite.
GiorgioG··on Apple Invites
The paranoia is real.
GiorgioG··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
A friend of mine is a pilot for these types of folks (founders of non-tech household names), unless they're going to an event (say the Super Bowl), they fly into smaller airports.
GiorgioG··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
> Cut the hours back to something sane, and as much as possible time the airport closures in ways that affect the ruling class

The ruling class flies private aircraft and don't have to operate out of large municipal airports.

GiorgioG··on Microsoft's 'performance-based' cuts have started
So sick of these bullshit "cuts" not being called what they are: layoffs.
GiorgioG··on Bluesky now has 30 million users
In a few months Bluesky will have more users than Canada has people.
GiorgioG··on Why Tracebit is written in C#
Microsoft has never taken it seriously, often releasing Visual Studio with broken F# support. It's fine for something you want to tinker with (like say Elm), but not something that's easy to sell to engineering managers when starting a new project.
GiorgioG··on Why Tracebit is written in C#
Every time I futz around with another language I go back to C# for backend work. Part of it is likely due to familiarity (I’ve been using it since 2002). I wish MS would put some additional resources into F#.
GiorgioG··on Why Tracebit is written in C#
As opposed to .NET’s mostly portable library ecosystem?
GiorgioG··on Add "fucking" to your Google searches to neutralize AI summaries
Don’t worry, the next model will be trained on all your fucking queries.
GiorgioG··on GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 sell out almost instantly
It's a paper launch.
GiorgioG··on So you wanna write Kubernetes controllers?
I don’t want Kubernetes period. Best decision we’ve made at work is to migrate away from k8s and onto AWS ECS. I just want to deploy containers! DevOps went from something you did when standing up or deploying an application, to an industry-wide jobs program. It’s the TSA of the software world.
GiorgioG··on My Impressions of Gleam
> Choosing to "not be political" means choosing to be inclusive to Nazis and to be dangerous for nearly everyone else.

That's a fucked up take. I guess because Gleam doesn't explicitly call out pedophiles, rapists, murderers, and other low-lifes that they must be inclusive of those folks too right? Gleam is so dangerous for everyone else as a result. /s

GiorgioG··on My Impressions of Gleam
> First and foremost, their statement about community on their homepage spoke to me

This will probably get me downvoted to hell, but here goes anyway. You know, sometimes I just want programming stuff to be about programming. If I want social justice I will go to the appropriate place. No I don't support Nazis or the like, but there's a shitload of other types of discrimination/injustices that I (and most others) also don't support, that we don't see plastered everywhere.

GiorgioG··on Starship Flight 7
Your mom experiences much better vastly different than mine. Trust and transparency is not something we have in the current “free market”. Musk is neither the first nor the last lying executive.
GiorgioG··on Starship Flight 7
I hope you’re as vocal about your higher ups.
GiorgioG··on Starship Flight 7
The taxpayer pays for all the lies.
GiorgioG··on Starship Flight 7
I’m not a big fan of Elon Musk, but this is just the typical executive talking up their product and to some extent being overly optimistic about timelines. You’d think with the quantity of software engineers in HN this would be obvious, but the (rightful IMO) disdain for Elon Musk is resetting people’s brains.
GiorgioG··on NY Assembly Bill: Criminal background checks for (nearly all) 3D printers
Ah yet another reason for people to flee the nanny state.
GiorgioG··on Distributed Transactions at Scale in Amazon DynamoDB (2023)
No, it's the morons who pick a technology (in this case DynamoDB) without understanding it is the wrong tool for the job at hand, leaving the rest of us holding the bag for years on end for their poor choice of tools.
GiorgioG··on German economy contracts 0.2% in 2024 in second consecutive annual slowdown
If Europe invested more in their militaries they could dictate their own terms with their neighbors.
GiorgioG··on Distributed Transactions at Scale in Amazon DynamoDB (2023)
DynamoDB is great if you want to fork over a lot of money to AWS on a monthly basis. It's inability to allow you to query on arbitrary attributes/fields without creating a separate index (i.e. copy of the entire collection) is mind-boggling. There are so many better, less expensive options out there for 99.99999% of use-cases. Friends don't let friends use DynamoDB.
GiorgioG··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
These are layoffs. See what he did there?
GiorgioG··on Ask HN: How do you prevent the impact of social media on your children?
Screen Time (iOS), and teach them to think for themselves. It really depends on what kind of personality your kid(s) have too. Our son is a rule-follower, so it's generally not an issue once he gets past the initial annoyance of not being allowed to do/have something.
GiorgioG··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
That wouldn't require a quota (5%) nor an announcement.
