GhettoMaestro··on Scott Adams Has Some Ideas for a Calmer Internet
> I don't care about winning or losing. But I don't know how to say, "whatever, moving on" in a way that itself doesn't get interpreted as further pettiness.

I struggled with this for years. In the end I just settled on saying "Respectfully, I think we will need to just agree to disagree. No hard feelings." A few times I've had to drop the "This conversation is going nowhere good. Let's talk about something else."

Being direct is under-rated. I find people aren't offended when you do it, as long as you are maintaining some basic amount of social decorum / grace.

GhettoMaestro··on What Is Secure Remote Password (SRP) Protocol and How to Use It?
Thanks for clearing that up. I had incorrectly assumed that something other than SRP had come along to fulfill this need - I guess not!
GhettoMaestro··on What Is Secure Remote Password (SRP) Protocol and How to Use It?
I feel dumb asking this, but does current industry authentication methods (secure channel via TLS) send the actual password, or a derived challenge-response value through the secure channel? I thought it was the latter.
GhettoMaestro··on How Radar Works
It amazes me how cheap these application-specific chips have become - it opens up so many new potentials. I can only guess that something like this would cost $1000+ roughly 10 years ago?
GhettoMaestro··on How Radar Works
Is CW used for radar applications? (I am only familiar with pulsed radar sets).

> Fair point. I don't know why I had a mental block and the idea of a recall never entered into my mind.

Because us tech people have been successful at hand-waving away product defects as mere planned obsolesce; we think about it as an option less and less. Point: Intel and all of the speculative execution crap, and specifically TSX (or the lack there of... but marketed as "Secure!" regardless).

Yeah it pisses me off. If you make an under-delivering pile of shit and make no attempt to right the wrong, fuck you and your company.

> [...] Do you think he couldn't fund and equip 100,000 mercenaries if his monopoly were threatened? [...]

In abstract, from the numbers sense (dollars), sure, your argument stands that test.

However, it does not stand the common sense test: what are said contractors going to do once the gig is over? Part of mil contracting is keeping yourself in the good graces of the sugar-daddy government to keep the funds rolling into the future when needs arise. Oh yeah, and also avoid going to prison (for reference, see Blackwater / US Contractor indemnification in Iraq).

GhettoMaestro··on Personal and social information of 1.2B people discovered in data leak
Bullshit.

If firing up a piece of software creates an unauthenticated, unprotected (non-TLS) endpoint to read-write data, that's a loaded gun. That is PRECISELY the default behavior of ES.

ES has jacked around for years by making TLS and other standard security features premium. To that, I say this: Screw ES and their bullshit business model. Their business model is a leading cause to dumbasses dumping extremely sensitive PII data into a DB that is unprotected - those same folks aren't going to go the extra mile to secure the DB, either by licensing or 3rd party bolt-ons.

Thus, why it must be shipped secure by default. Anything less is a professional felony, in my eyes. Also, screw ES again, in-case I wasn't clear.

GhettoMaestro··on Oracle built a 1,060 node Raspberry Pi cluster
My understanding is that Netflix will pretty much subsidize the cost of the CDN box to nearly any ISP above a certain minimum traffic level ingress from Netflix.

Great model to attack the incumbent [transport / transit] carrier costs - end run around the middle-men and drop your CDN boxes directly at the edge (last-mile) ISPs.

> At some point you just have to call out people for being utter morons. The blame is on them, 100%. [...]

Your attitude is a symptom of a broader issue that plagues this industry: Indifference to risk*probability. If you don't ship software with "secure defaults" (depending on the threat/attack model), you essentially are handing out loaded shotguns, then blaming the "dumb" user when they inevitably point it at their foot and click the trigger. Easy solution: Don't hand out the gun loaded -- make the user do specific actions that enable the usage. Yeah, it creates some friction to first time deployment, but that's a secondary concern to having your freaking DB leaking all over the place.

GhettoMaestro··on Sacha Baron Cohen Uses ADL Speech to Tear Apart Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook
What's the line? There always is one. Example: Child pornography.

The banning of child pornography is legally sanctioned censorship. The legal argument being that the content is "Child Abuse Material" (CAM), which is audio-video evidence of a crime, which in that legal argument is not protected free-speech.

Obviously child pornography is horrible and should NOT be permitted to be spread due to a variety of negative consequences associated with it, namely for the victims involved. I am highlighting that censorship is a tricky issue.

That said, political speech should always be permitted in the public sphere, even if what is being advocated for is horrific. I believe in allowing people to make complete fools of themselves ("give them a long enough rope"). Sure, Neo-Nazis might gain a few followers by allowing them to stomp around the streets, but I'd wager that 95% of the people who see them immediately classify them as complete assholes and fucking degenerates.

While I'm not a fan of folks being "doxxed" online for holding dumb-ass views, I do have a mental line where if you are actively meeting and assembling physically to advance immoral and un-American causes, I think you should be prepared to stand behind your association with said movement under your real identity. And that will have an impact on your friends, family, employment, social standing, etc.

That is not a bug, that is a feature. It creates self-harmonizing communities where horrible behavior (actions) has social consequences, especially when the viewpoints or behaviors are not actually illegal, but still equally shitty.

Why, for smoking weed on the Joe Rogan show?

Weed and security clearances are such a non-issue. I had a TS/SCI for years but opted to not get it renewed. Why? I like to smoke weed and don't wish to cause issues with my employment if it were ever to be discovered or found out.

Meanwhile a guy I know who still has a TS/SCI gets blackout drunk weekly.

Go figure.

GhettoMaestro··on Highs and lows of Lowell Cafe, America’s first cannabis cafe
I believe a separate room (sealed with automatic closing door) and an air extractor/scrubber is required for indoors usage. Where I live, you can offer a smoking section outdoors, but honestly, the air extractors are pretty cheap and help avoid adjacent non-smoking patrons from being bothered. They should be used both indoors and outdoors in my view.

No. He has repeatedly made the same comment (or "meme", "canard"). It is not insightful commentary; it is not much more beyond propaganda at this point.

California has made horrible financial decisions for over a decade. To pretend it is somehow moral to trap people and their wealth to those decisions is complete insanity. Also it won't work, to point out the obvious.

> I still can’t believe it’s legal to move from SF to Texas if you were born and raised in SF. You owe the good people of San Francisco repayment for raising and nurturing you. Leaving after all that education and local services is a corrupt tax-dodge into a state without income tax.

Lol you again. How many times must you hear this to understand: Total freedom implies freedom of movement. You do not own people. You never will. You have no moral basis.
