Genego··on Where can I find a good tribe / community for myself?
I've thought about the same thing for a long time, and recently decided to start a monthly MeetUp community around some of the values I enjoy (tech, friendships, exploration/adventure, learning new things, etc). You can try that, at least you'll attract some like minded people, and as organiser can also set the tone.
Genego··on iPhone Costs by Region
In the last decade, it used to be a thing that people flew to Africa with several EU iPhones and Macbooks to sell them there on the open market. The profit of several new phones would cover expenses for a round trip and some more. Some people made their business out of it. But going towards 2020, customs became less lenient. I'm wondering if that's still a thing.
Genego··on Ask HN: If you cut caffeine, how long would you last at your job?
Having cut caffeine quite often, it usually takes me a week or two to bounce back to a base line. And then I am back to my usual productivity, given that I am sleeping 8 hours, eating well and am exercising.
Genego··on ‘The Billion Dollar Code’: Developers Who Sued Over Google Earth Algorithm
I tried hard to enjoy it. I did like the characters, but the dramatized story really didn't work for me. I guess it was a win though, because previously I had never heard about Terravision.
Genego··on Ask HN: Are there paid commenters on HN?
I'm fairly convinced there are. Often comment discussions for newer technical books pop up here on HN that get shilled for weeks like it's some legendary book that has been in print for decades. Then those discussions just die out until the next book makes the shill cycle (I guess?).
Genego··on Disabling /all chat in matchmade queues
LoL is likely the game that I played the most in the past decade. And one of the first things I would do after joining a match is disabling chat. I'd be in discord with friends talking about other stuff. The amount of trolling, name calling, hate and insults in the game is just on another level. It also seems to be one of the main reasons why some people leave the game behind. Am I glad that chat was disabled? Yes in the current state of the game I am, still sad that it had to be done.
Genego··on Show HN: Ishim – find available one-word domain names
It looks interesting and I really do like this. But in a world of ransomware, I am not going to install any software on my machine just because it looks interesting.

I know I am echoing half of the other comments here, but this does really need to be a webapp.

Genego··on Dutch cities want to ban property investors in all neighborhoods
Germany has much better tenant and rental market protection. Real estate prices are rising rapidly, but supply does seem to keep up with demand when it comes down to renting. Population density in Germany also is only half that of the Netherlands (240 vs 508 per km2), so that also helps. If you're priced out somewhere, you always have the option to move somewhere else. In the Netherlands you don't have much of a option right now when it comes down to renting (and mostly buying as well).
Genego··on Dutch cities want to ban property investors in all neighborhoods
The problem is that these investors have raised rents nationally to a point where there is no affordable housing outside of social housing (8-15+ year wait lists). And this happened in a very short time period. If I'd want a 60-80m2 apartment in the city I currently live, I'd have to pay 1000-1200+ Euro for that; three to four years ago, that would have been half. Just over the border in Germany the same apartment goes for 350-500 Euros (NRW to be specific). The housing market here feels beyond crazy. Real estate prices themselves are also exploding +10%~ month over month
Genego··on Thousands without power during record-breaking heat
Almost 45c-48c! I already have trouble functioning at 35c with an A/C. I couldn't imagine +10c and no power, crazy.
Genego··on Americans are on the move, but their stuff doesn’t always follow
Not entirely sure, since the shipping part was not organized by me. I did give relatives about 1000$ to cover any necessary expenses, which would have been 1/10~ the cost of stuff being shipped. In the end that worked out well, but it took about 7 months from packing to shipping for everything to arrive at their front door. Half of the time waiting was spend, wrapped in a warehouse prior to it being packed into a container.
Genego··on Americans are on the move, but their stuff doesn’t always follow
The last time I moved into a new apartment, I arrived with nothing but a suitcase and a backpack; a mattress ordered from Amazon, with some blankets arrived that same day. Over the course of a year, every piece of furniture arrived by post and was unpacked in my living room (which was a lot). Four years later I moved, with nothing but a backpack and a suitcase again. Most of my belongings were packed into a shipping container and donated to family in Africa. Seeing pictures of their apartment is uncanny, it feels like my apartments 'soul' lives on.
