GenKali··on HantaWatch Real time hantavirus outbreak tracker
I do love (do I?) that as I get older the early symptoms of most diseases are usually just me on a bad day:

Fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, muscle aches - could be hantavirus, could be waking up in a weird position after slightly undercooked chicken stew for supper

GenKali··on The creeping scourge of tooling config files in project root directories
First I'm hearing of this tool and it seems really nice. Do you perhaps have an open repo that shows how you are using the dhall files? If I can reduce my config files to dhall + justfile I'd be quite happy.
GenKali··on Learning Ada
I've read through this article twice now and I still fail to see your point.

Steve is most likely more familiar with Rust than any other language - which is why I would expect comparisons between it and Ada - but he doesn't go out of his way to insist on Rust's superiority.

GenKali··on Ask HN: Just finished my dissertation, what language should I learn for fun?
My votes go to Rust and Elixir. I'd say I've had the most fun in Elixir recently, but Rust comes a very close second - especially once the borrow-checker and I started seeing eye to eye.
GenKali··on React v16.3.0: New lifecycles and context API
AFAIK the problem with the old context is that values in context were not used to determine whether or not the component tree should update. So if a context value in A changed, but no props/local state changed, it would not redraw the tree below it (B -> C). If C's render depended on the context value, it would not be redrawn to reflect the change.
GenKali··on Apple HomePod – a missed opportunity
I presume you have sources backing the claim that Spotify is the majority of the streaming market. Be that as it may Apple Music is available in far more places that Spotify.

This is as of early last year : https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/apple-music-is-now-in...

And as far as I can google, Spotify still isn't available anywhere in Africa officially as of September 2017.

Spotify being a majority of the streaming market numerically doesn't matter too much if its market reach is limited.

GenKali··on Announcing Rust 1.20
Having used Rust since pre-release I'm slightly embarrassed that I'm only learning about this today.
GenKali··on More on Dota 2
Indeed - I believe it was a highly successful build order that strayed from the 'norm' at the time. I was quite into SC2 at the time and this was something of a big deal.

NextTrain: https://www.nextrain.co.za

We have a fledgling train system in the Gauteng area of South Africa (this area includes Johannesburg and Pretoria). However, the only way to see train schedules is via a PDF (2MB) buried deep on their website.

This was a quick weekend hack to show when the next train is for each of the stations, and some additional info.

GenKali··on Native GUI library for Go
Is the readme supposed to look like that? The first few paragraphs are all 'h2' level text. Very difficult to read through.
GenKali··on Searching the Internet for evidence of time travelers
Ever so slightly disappointed at the complete lack of mention of Steins;Gate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steins;Gate) in the paper. Interesting read all the same :)
