tl;dr: Backup to their customer database was accessible without authentification. Data includes names, addresses, phone numbers, bookings, id card numbers, employer, crash reports, witnesses and more
I was a bit frustrated when the police wrote down "around 8" instead of 8:14. :)
I have several long-running albums for different people to which I just add photos that might interest them. That way it takes very little effort on my part and they have all photos that I sent them neatly collected in one album.
I still love that this would actually remove the dust from the body though. I never had a problem with the vibrating-sensor-solution, but it always bothers me that all the dust just gets moved around in the body without really being gone.
It probably wasn't the most popular product to begin with, but I am still amazed that nobody even noticed the drop in sales.
I once bought a AmazonBasics power bank which got recalled quite some time later due to a possible fire hazard. They refunded me the money and told me to dispose of the unit. Although the fire hazard part did not help my trust in the brand at first I later wondered how other manufacturers would have handled this. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have heard anything from most of them.
(Lightly related, just this week I noticed the battery of my Dell laptop had swollen so far that it bulged the casing. Batteries are scary...)
I know of no other place where it is so easy to gather people. Just post a new event and people will notice and sign up.
If you switch to a self-hosted solution you will have to find an audience through other channels. Which, for many Meetups, is quite the challenge. Remember "build it and they will come"? Same applies to events. "Set a date and they will come" - doesn't work that way unless you have an existing audience.
Personally I don't mind paying 2$ to attend a meetup. The old/existing pricing model seemed much smarter for everyone involved though. Organizers pay to get access to the audience. The audience pays nothing so that the audience, the real value, can be maximized. I hope that they won't destroy their value with this move...
What is often missed, though, is that Meetup provides more than the software. The real killer feature of Meetup is the audience.

Plus I keep reading these stories over and over again. Multiple anecdotes in the discussion to this article alone...
Both got repaired (mainboard replaced) under warranty without issue. I'm still happy with the phone and haven't found anything comparable considering the price (270€ approx. 1 year after release), but you definitely need to have a solid backup strategy.
