GarvielLoken··on Decades-Old Graph Problem Yields to Amateur Mathematician
“Occasionally, when I need a rest from my real job, I’ll think about math,” Signature material.
GarvielLoken··on The “Run Less Software” philosophy
Is that a joke?
GarvielLoken··on Your body wasn’t built to last: Math of human mortality (2009)
Another useless scientific article about obvious things. Yes, you have a higher chance of dying when you get older, is this really a "news" we need on HackerNews? Notice that the article doesn't even offer new facts, only statistical observations.
GarvielLoken··on Is developer compensation becoming bimodal?
Which you can't use across multiple customers if you work at an IT-consultant company :(. I guess you could make it open source, but then you still would have to convince every team you join to adopt it.
GarvielLoken··on The Joys of Victimhood (1989)
Doesn't cycle imply that it went down in between?
GarvielLoken··on Is Your English Accent British or American?
Swede here, got 92% Brittish, i'm happy with the results. The English education back in school has apparently won over my media consumption :p.
GarvielLoken··on A Type of Road Junction that Kills Cyclists
Road Junctions don't kill people, people kill people.
GarvielLoken··on Woman with Transplanted Uterus Gives Birth, the First in the U.S
I first read " Woman with Transparent Uterus Gives Birth, the First in the U.S "
GarvielLoken··on What the Stoics did for us
"You desire to LIVE "according to Nature"? Oh, you noble Stoics, what fraud of words! Imagine to yourselves a being like Nature, boundlessly extravagant, boundlessly indifferent, without purpose or consideration, without pity or justice, at once fruitful and barren and uncertain: imagine to yourselves INDIFFERENCE as a power--how COULD you live in accordance with such indifference? To live--is not that just endeavoring to be otherwise than this Nature? Is not living valuing, preferring, being unjust, being limited, endeavouring to be different? And granted that your imperative, "living according to Nature," means actually the same as "living according to life"--how could you do DIFFERENTLY? Why should you make a principle out of what you yourselves are, and must be? In reality, however, it is quite otherwise with you: while you pretend to read with rapture the canon of your law in Nature, you want something quite the contrary, you extraordinary stage-players and self-deluders! In your pride you wish to dictate your morals and ideals to Nature, to Nature herself, and to incorporate them therein; you insist that it shall be Nature "according to the Stoa," and would like everything to be made after your own image, as a vast, eternal glorification and generalism of Stoicism! With all your love for truth, you have forced yourselves so long, so persistently, and with such hypnotic rigidity to see Nature FALSELY, that is to say, Stoically, that you are no longer able to see it otherwise-- and to crown all, some unfathomable superciliousness gives you the Bedlamite hope that BECAUSE you are able to tyrannize over yourselves--Stoicism is self-tyranny--Nature will also allow herself to be tyrannized over: is not the Stoic a PART of Nature? . . . But this is an old and everlasting story: what happened in old times with the Stoics still happens today, as soon as ever a philosophy begins to believe in itself. It always creates the world in its own image; it cannot do otherwise; philosophy is this tyrannical impulse itself, the most spiritual Will to Power, the will to "creation of the world," the will to the causa prima." Nietzsche

No
GarvielLoken··on The Shock of Sweden's Housing Market Is Hitting the Country's Currency
You don't have to pay for health insurance in Sweden.
GarvielLoken··on Is There an Ideal Amount of Income Inequality?
And then we have Gödel's incompleteness theorems.
GarvielLoken··on The Xerox Alto, Smalltalk, and Rewriting a Running GUI
"Smalltalk is a highly-influential programming language and environment that introduced the term "object-oriented programming" and was the ancestor of modern object-oriented languages." Funny way to spell Simula.
GarvielLoken··on Hotswapping Haskell
We are going to be back in the 70ies/80ies of running live image programming-systems in no time. History repeats itself. Mark my words.
GarvielLoken··on Is Haskell the right language for teaching functional programming principles?
SICP in Scheme is the only true answer. You are all heretics.
GarvielLoken··on We Can Achieve Anything If We Stop Trying To Do Everything
I agree that it is a good mindset. But i think the advice to spend a little time each day on something consistently is more important. That allows you to improve several things concurrently.
GarvielLoken··on My first fifteen compilers
http://www.craftinginterpreters.com/a-tree-walk-interpreter.... This link has been up a long time ago on hackernews, or reddit, can't remember which. But i am trying to work through it, it has good basic explanation.

And then you have SICP which introduces compilers without really talking about it :p.

GarvielLoken··on Math education: It’s not about numbers, it’s about learning how to think
tl;dr A couple of numbers-nerds are sad and offended that math is not as recognized as reading and literature, where there are great works that speaks of the human condition and illustrates life.

Also they have the mandatory "everything is really math! ™". "LeGrand notes that dancing and music are mathematics in motion. So ... dance, play an instrument."

Just because i can describe history through the perspective of capitalism or Marx theories, does not make history the same thing as either of those.

GarvielLoken··on Chekhov: “Cultured people must, in my opinion, satisfy the following conditions”
But you don't need the gym, for losing weight or getting healthier. The only thing you need the gym for is getting big muscles, now you can reframe the question. Is my goal to be more healthy or getting ripped?

If the goal is health then you can stop going to the gym. Start running, start swimming, try bicycle, outdoor gyms, join a hike group, join a martial art club. Start doing excersices at home with your body weight. If you are so weak or big that you can't do many bodyweight drills, then you don't need a gym anyway. Better served with a small 10$ dumbar package at home.

The only thing that can be good with a gym is a Personal Trainer that can give you a good plan. It will be hard to replace that service to the same level.

If your goal truly is to be more muscular, then and only then does it really become a question of motivation. Do i want this enough do go to the gym, even on the days that i don't feel for it?

GarvielLoken··on Algorithms
Common Lisp is the rebel leader, but is hampered by constant infighting.
GarvielLoken··on Autism detectable in brain long before symptoms appear
Except that is not true. We know from texts that if anything old "geniuses" were not autistic, but they were on the bipolar spectrum, or more generally on the affect spectrum ( mood disturbance ). Winston Churchill for example is famously bipolar. Many texts refer to feeling an overbearing sudden sadness, as in bipolar depression spectrum.

Autism and schizophrenia are so horrible because they are not on the affect spectrum. So in a historic view autism is indeed a new and a modern madness.

I would recommend the book "The Master and His Emissary" by Iain McGilchrist.

GarvielLoken··on Raising the American Weakling
You could do orienteering, then you get the mental aspect also. It is really fun and you get the forest running.
GarvielLoken··on Raising the American Weakling
Good thing I do Judo! Those higher belt guys got unbelievable grip strength, it is not something you simply strip off if they get a hold of you.
GarvielLoken··on Peak Millennial? Cities Can’t Assume a Continued Boost from the Young
Funnily enough this is already done in Sweden, since a long time ago. A social-democrat country, would you believe it! It is also the same for health care and elderly homes. It is going to be one of the biggest election questions next year because the social-democrat will try to go for a "profit cap" on private companies in these sectors, because they are founded with tax money.

P.S I actually think we are unique in the world with supplying private companies with tax-money for health and school.

GarvielLoken··on Human Cells Eat Nanowires
Anyone else that think that this might be a bad idea?
GarvielLoken··on Manufacturing Jobs Aren’t Coming Back
See the Roman Empire economy for references. Massive farms powered by slaves, plebs living on minimum welfare in poverty. Rich aristocrats spending their time on propaganda and schemes.
GarvielLoken··on How Japan Prepares Its Children for Independence
It is the same in Italy and Spain. Part culture, part crowded housing market.
GarvielLoken··on Computer Simulations Suggest War Drove the Rise of Civilisations (2013)
There exists other theories. http://johnsmilitaryhistory.com/cwarmy.html The main reason why the civil war was bloody was because it was fought by armies with no great military history or traditions. There were no hussars, no cuirasses. Neither army had experience fighting a modern enemy. Of course it became a bloodbath, like watching two drunks punch each other tired, no skill.

GarvielLoken··on Old Geek
I disagree with "This is not something you learn in a CS program". Anyone who has taken a SICP course will know "all is old is new again". But in large I agree with you.
