GartzenDeHaes··on Britain today generating 90%+ of electricity from renewables
Good thing they won't be needing any of that LNG from the Gulf.
GartzenDeHaes··on Webbol: A minimal static web server written in COBOL
COBOL used to drive some government and business web sites. You could tell because the HTML was output in 100 column fixed width format.
GartzenDeHaes··on Athlon 64: How AMD turned the tables on Intel
> they wouldn’t have to worry about competing CPU designs, at least not for a very long time.

US Government sales require two vendors, which I think is why AMD had x86 licenses in the first place.

GartzenDeHaes··on 40k-Year-Old Symbols in Caves Worldwide May Be the Earliest Written Language
The uniform scale of the symbols is deceptive since the source drawings have substantially different sizes. The hand outline is hand sized, for instance.
GartzenDeHaes··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
H-1B is for difficult-to-find specialists and O-1 is for people with extraordinary ability in their field.

H-2B is for ordinary workers.

GartzenDeHaes··on Chat Control Must Be Stopped
Hardware attestation. They say vendors are pushing this like crazy at security and government conferences.
GartzenDeHaes··on Freeway guardrails are now a favorite target of thieves
Just like during the collapse of the Soviet Union.
GartzenDeHaes··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
Getting ready for doomsday? You need a solar powered, wifi-enabled, offline wikipedia server.

GartzenDeHaes··on Debian switches to 64-bit time for everything
That's what the specs say, but I found out it actually didn't work that way when I was working on a transpiler, at least for that installation.
GartzenDeHaes··on Debian switches to 64-bit time for everything
People aren't getting that it was two characters that need to be added, not two bytes to make a short into an int. COBOL uses a fixed width character format for all data (yes even for COMP). If you want a four digit number, then you have to use 4 character positions. Ten digits? Then ten characters.

These field sizes have to hard coded into all parts of the COBOL program including data access, UI screens, batch jobs, intermediate files, and data transfer files.

GartzenDeHaes··on OpenAI wins $200M U.S. defense contract
Gen. Ripper is getting some validation now that fluoride is being banned in some places.
GartzenDeHaes··on South Korean president declares martial law, parliament votes to lift it
Here one example. Al-Qaeda was the name of Osama bin Laden's legitimate political party in Saudi Arabia, which he kept separate from his jihadist activities in Afghanistan. There is not now, nor has there ever been, a shadowy international terrorist group called Al-Qaeda. It's a complete fiction that was used as a simple explanation for the dizzying array of groups hated by western oligarchs.
GartzenDeHaes··on Fiber optic drone control beats any RF jammer
'explosively pumped flux compression generator', is an EMP generator I think.
GartzenDeHaes··on Fiber optic drone control beats any RF jammer
I think older TOW, AT-2, and other such missiles used wires rather than fiber optics. Fiber optics is thinner, which would give it a much longer range presumably.
GartzenDeHaes··on GE Aerospace Successfully Develops and Tests New Hypersonic Dual-Mode Ramjet
> which could enable high-speed flight and longer range across numerous multi-mission aircraft

This is DoD language, so more secret drones I would think.

GartzenDeHaes··on Security researcher discovers Microsoft's Recall tool is woefully insecure
> main threat is from malware that compromises SYSTEM

It's a keylogger -- the system IS the malware.

GartzenDeHaes··on Carpenter's AirTags help uncover 'massive' case of stolen tools in Maryland
Remember George Zimmerman? People aren't going to do what you say just because you have a gun.
GartzenDeHaes··on You Can Thank Private Equity for That Enormous Doctor's Bill
By diagnosing more things, performing more procedures, and prescribing more pharmaceuticals. The opioid crisis, for example.
GartzenDeHaes··on Ask HN: What is your ChatGPT customization prompt?
It seems as if the people who rave about it's coding abilities are doing a lot of copy+paste stack overflow level of coding. I'm not sure whether it's great that this can be automated, or if it's depressing that so much human effort is being wasted.
GartzenDeHaes··on Ask HN: What is your ChatGPT customization prompt?
How long before people start non-ironically wearing their prompts on tshirts or putting them on business cards?
GartzenDeHaes··on Windows Recall sounds like a privacy nightmare
There are two sides to this: investigations and monitoring. For HR and security investigations, this rewind capability would be very useful, is legal, and at least partially already performed using forensics tools.

Monitoring is where you run into moral and, in some places, legal problems. This would probably be a good topic for new legislation.

GartzenDeHaes··on Sierra was captured, then killed, by an accounting fraud (2020)
SOX was implemented with COBIT 4, Control Objectives for IT. This introduced a lot of process and cost overhead, so COBIT 5 removed the control objectives -- it's just a list of IT topics. So now, corporations can now comply with SOX by doing nothing.
GartzenDeHaes··on Introducing Copilot+ PCs
Probably whatever they're calling Windows Store apps now, universal windows app or something. These are .net applications that are natively compiled when installed (I think).
GartzenDeHaes··on The Lunacy of Artemis
It's wild to think the world of 2001 A Space Odyssey seemed very possible to the people of the late 1960's. They went to the moon in only about 10 years, so a Jupiter mission in another 30 years would just be a continuation of current progress. Little did they know that humans would lose the capability to leave orbit just a few short years later.
GartzenDeHaes··on The Lunacy of Artemis
Congress dictates what executive branch agencies do, not the other way around.
GartzenDeHaes··on Swarming Proxima Centauri: Picospacecraft Swarms over Interstellar Distances
Could be a cover project for something classified, such as a ground based laser paired with an orbital mirror on lets say an X-37 or something.
GartzenDeHaes··on Wine 9.9 (Dev) – Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS
There's almost no learning curve if you know Photoshop versions 6.0 - CS6. From this point of view, Pinta has a bit of a learning curve, or maybe there's some bugs, or maybe it doesn't like my system colors. It also seems (not sure) to lack common brush and tool settings, although maybe it draws differently than PS.
GartzenDeHaes··on 23% of bachelor's degrees and 43% of master's degrees have a negative ROI
You're comparing medians to means. The means are much lower due to the average being skewed upwards by the wealthy.

Edit: the averages are much higher than the median of course

GartzenDeHaes··on Coronal mass ejection impact imminent, two more earth-directed CMEs
If you really want to be safe: put it in a cardboard box, wrap the cardboard box in air tight aluminum foil or a metal container, and then put the whole thing in another cardboard box to prevent any grounds or shorts.
GartzenDeHaes··on Leaked deck reveals how OpenAI is pitching publisher partnerships
Woman on ChatGPT: Come on! My kids are starvin'!

ChatGPT: Microsoft believes no child should go hungry. You are an unfit mother. Your children will be placed in the custody of Microsoft.
