GBond··on Americans' love affair with big cars is killing them
The US Truck buyers likes to hate on the Honda Ridgeline (too car-like), but it is the most American choice: https://www.motor1.com/news/723746/honda-ridgeline-more-amer...

GBond··on Tell HN: I interviewed my dad before he died
By the time gen-z kids become adults, video will be so common that they will wonder why our generation didn't document family moments more often.

Please don't apologize for thinking this was tonedeaf. It's possibly the most real thing anybody has ever posted on HN. Thanks for sharing.
GBond··on How I Faked My Way to the Top of Paris Fashion Week [video]
True story: I spotted Jack Dorsey 2 weeks rocking Balenciaga kicks and streetwear in Soho NYC. My point is fashion is just fashion and what you wear is relative to what you consider to be your "in group".
GBond··on Before Food Trucks, Americans Ate 'Night Lunch' from Beautiful Wagons
A version of these will likely come back. Autonomous vehicles tech will enable on-demand, self-driving restaurants that park in front of your door.
GBond··on Crying in H Mart
Poignant article. I'm glad to find it on HN and happy to see an absence of complaints of being irrelevant to tech.
GBond··on I Got Catfished by a Candidate
Isn't this the plot of Mad Men?
GBond··on Congrats Dropbox
I remember this post. One of many "show HN" posts that have hit it big. Congrats!
GBond··on Blood from young animals can revitalise old ones
Negative comments being quickly bubbled up to the top is an HN thing. Most tech folks I know are the idealist type.
GBond··on How AWS Cloud is demolishing the cult of youth
Yes. If AWS hired non-household names over 40 across the board, that would be a different story.
GBond··on Amazon to Build a Permanent Mary's Place Family Shelter Within Its Headquarters
Some of the negative comments here exemplify why the mainstream is starting to hate on the "tech elitist" types in the same way FinanceBros were viewed negatively in the '90s and '00s.
GBond··on Why Germany Still Has So Many Middle-Class Manufacturing Jobs
I would add differences in domestic consumers preferences. Americans are now addicted to cheap-quality goods. I passed through the gift shop inside Empire Sate Building in NY yesterday and 98% of the gifts are asian imported plastic trinkets branded with Empire State and USA logos. Contrasts that to when I visited the museums in Berlin where the shops mainly focused on selling locally produced crafts.
GBond··on Why Chinatown Produce Is Cheap (2016)
fish gut refuge + hot air/sun does not mix well
GBond··on Angie's List Acquired for $500M by IAC
My money is on Amazon Home & Business Services. Although essentially they have the same referral network model, people trust AMZN's review platform.
GBond··on ESPN Can't Afford to Go on Like This
perhaps not most but the hard core fans (AKA die hards) for sure. And Hard core = $$$.
GBond··on If you opened your PayPal account before you were 18, close it
The bright side is now that its on HN, you have a high chance the issue will be resolved for you.
GBond··on “Side Hustle” as a Sign of the Apocalypse
My prediction is Uber et al will take notice of this HN thread and address it by coming out with ads on how their drivers are treated well.
GBond··on [dead]
Or maybe elite students from other countries don't hold your same US-centric view that a programming education is for the low in status only?
GBond··on Amazon has made its first drone delivery to an actual customer
JD.com (one of the large Amazons of china) has been doing this at a larger scale. http://fortune.com/2016/11/14/jd-china-drone-delivery-single...
GBond··on Twitter suspends alt-right figureheads
The reality is sometimes the meaning poured behind a symbol gets changed. The SWASTIKA symbol, originally meant "Good Fortune", existed 5000 years before the Nazis used it.
GBond··on Facebook admits it must do more to stop the spread of misinformation
Zuck seems to be crafting and curating his persona & reputation for a future life of public office. Changing up facebook's bad content reputation will be important for this path.
GBond··on U.S. regulators accuse Palantir of bias against Asians
I too expected more from HN and I think it's because HN is generally more civil than other webs forums. I think the credit of this civility goes to the HN moderators and the enforcement of the policies, not because HN types are special. I used to think technical minded folks are more analytical and thus have less tendency for bias and generalizations but I've concluded that ultimately tech people are still people and subject to the same filters as "normals".

I hope you not discouraged from pursuing your specialization in the US.

GBond··on U.S. regulators accuse Palantir of bias against Asians
Most top tier universities don't consider asian-americans as under-represented minorities and even hold higher standards via unwritten caps for the number of AAs admitted.
GBond··on Is developer compensation becoming bimodal?
Yes, I agree.

The web-scale software segment is at a unique point in time where it is still in an "arms race" mode of growth for the best employees between its competitors AND making tremendous profits.
