FundThrowaway··on FizzBuzz Enterprise Edition
While Enterprise is always the go to for things like this, I think any time non technical people get involved in technical decisions the fun time begins. Just today I was told that I wasn't allowed to implement something in python just because it's "a scripting language"

I've enjoyed some interesting blockchain related ideas recently, most of them start off quite innocently but then comes the "but we want to use smart contracts" and I'll tell them that there is no need and it would add unnecessary complication "but if we can use the blockchain it will be worth more" -__-
FundThrowaway··on FizzBuzz Enterprise Edition
Of course it goes without saying, ongoing support will cost you extra.
FundThrowaway··on Mindfulness may have been over-hyped
I'd argue that the broken society narrative is a subjective opinion and not objectively quantfiable. One man's broken society is another man's utopia, it's all dependent on your personal beliefs.
FundThrowaway··on How We Found New Patterns in LA’s Homeless Arrest Data
I don't believe so, over that month I spent many hours talking to them and heard many times that they would rather be homeless than live a regular Joe life. I imagine that kind of freedom could be somewhat satisfying.
FundThrowaway··on Ask HN: How do you continuously monitor web logs for hack attempts?
Ha I remember awhile ago doing something similar with our AWS server logs, turned out we were always under attack 24/7, rather amusing but not very useful apart from scaring juniors a little bit.
FundThrowaway··on Tech watchdogs call on Facebook, Google for transparency around censored content
My only real concern with the view that the strip is stating is that allows a "loud" minority to literally or figuratively shut down or shout over the voices of any dissenters.

I believe a lot of this disconnect is between people who view equality as equality of opportunity and those who believe that equality is actually the equality of outcome.
FundThrowaway··on How We Found New Patterns in LA’s Homeless Arrest Data
One of the most depressing moments I've experienced was when I was still in school and we did a charity thing for a month where we'd go to the local homeless shelter and help out with various tasks and interact with the homeless people who would come by the shelter.

The reason it was depressing wasn't what you'd expect, I had expected to feel sorry for them but in turned out that the vast vast majority of them were perfectly happy to be homeless they had no want for a better life, they just wanted handouts and felt entitled to them, it was really a strange experience that stuck with me.

FundThrowaway··on Who controls glibc?
When did HN get so political? In the last couple of months I've noticed an increasing amount of argumentative political discussion. Both sides seem so convinced of their moral superiority, it was somewhat amusing at first but now I'm tired of it.

I thought this was one of the last places I could come to get away from it but not anymore.

FundThrowaway··on Digital Vigilantes Who Hack Back
Seems like quite a likely outcome to me also, I imagine most serious attackers understand the concept of covering their tracks and aren't exactly going to be sending packets straight from their home computer without protection.

Just take a look on any of the numerous cybercrime forums at any one time there are hundreds of "VPS"s available for rent which are are just compromised PCs of innocent folk.

FundThrowaway··on Redux – Not Dead Yet
That's one of my favourite parts of Redux is how flexible it is, use a little bit here and there where it's appropriate. The current project I'm working uses Redux to manage all of the websocket communication but that's it.

FundThrowaway··on Teenager facing prison for downloading unsecured files from government website
Talk about no sense of humour.
FundThrowaway··on Teenager facing prison for downloading unsecured files from government website
From the article: "When he was around eight, he remembered playing around with the HTML of the Google search page, making the coloured letters spell out his name."

Isn't the Google logo an image? Smells a bit fishy to me.

FundThrowaway··on Rich Formula: Quant Trading (2015)
The edge is found usually in the details of the implementation of a strategy.
FundThrowaway··on Rich Formula: Quant Trading (2015)
Perhaps read about market neutral strategies, most quant funds have much higher sharpe ratios than index funds.
FundThrowaway··on Rich Formula: Quant Trading (2015)
At what risk though? Returns should always be considered by the risk taken to achieve them.
FundThrowaway··on Rich Formula: Quant Trading (2015)
Let me let you in on a little secret of the quant world, it is easier than you assume at least in terms of idea generation. Every fund I've ever been with the vast majority of strategies are sourced from academic papers, you don't need to think up new and novel ideas.
