FriedPickles··on Show HN: YakGPT – A locally running, hands-free ChatGPT UI
I love the concept of this and other alternate ChatGPT UIs, but I hesitate to use them and pay for my calls when I could use chat.openai.com for free.

Any chance you could integrate the backend-api, and let me paste in my Bearer token from there?

FriedPickles··on Apple Detection of Flashing Lights
Could flashing lights be the new blue light? Even for non epileptics, flashing lights might be associated with eye strain, sleep disruption, migraines, and stress. I may turn this feature on.
FriedPickles··on Indoor air quality and learning: Evidence from large field study in schools [pdf]
The paper doesn't discuss the physiological mechanism by which poor air quality impairs performance. Perhaps the idea just that a higher ppCO2 impairs CO2 excretion, creating back pressure against all aerobic metabolism. If so this raises some interesting questions:

Could we achieve "superhuman" performance by breathing CO2 depleted air (below ~420 ppm)? Is the rising atmospheric CO2 level making us all stupider? Should teachers begin class with a breathing exercise?

FriedPickles··on Interactive California Reservoir Levels Dashboard
Looks like that one is designed to spill over the top. Fascinating. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Englebright_Dam#/media/File:En...
FriedPickles··on Interactive California Reservoir Levels Dashboard
Wow, there's a blue bar that goes off the chart: Whiskeytown reservoir, 102% capacity. Sure enough, that reservoir is filled to the brim and overflowed today into the giant Glory Hole: https://www.redding.com/story/news/local/2023/01/09/recent-r...
FriedPickles··on Hummingbird Clock
Anybody doing this for any of the US grids?
FriedPickles··on US companies are producing heat pumps that work below -20F
Id love to see a combined heat and power system that burns natural gas to drive a heat pump compressor, and recovers the combustion heat. I wonder what multiplier it would get on a therm.
FriedPickles··on Engineers are exploring radical new designs for commercial planes
For the same reason we don't cover cars in 3" thick steel armor. It's still very important–planes and cargo are expensive. But overall cost might be optimized without quite as many zeros.

This is why old planes long since retired from passenger service are now used for cargo flights, which have an 8x higher accident rate. https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=212692...

FriedPickles··on Engineers are exploring radical new designs for commercial planes
Interesting point. Cargo and fuel should be placed on the far sides. Passengers towards the center, perhaps on two levels. Routes could be adjusted to decrease typical bank angles.

Makes me wonder if we'll have cargo-only planes that converge on a different optimum. In full autonomous mode, comfort is not a factor and reliability can also be relaxed. Of course, we'd lose the flexibility of being able to convert the plane for passenger service.

FriedPickles··on M2 MacBook Air
I was hoping for a usb-c port on the other side. Also why did they move the speakers from the sides of the keyboard to the top? It looks like that space is just empty on the top of the case now.

The new charger is cool with two usb-c ports. I wonder if it's GaN.

FriedPickles··on Solid-state cells will cut EV charging time and increase volumetric density
Voltages are going up! The Lucid Air battery pack is at 900 volts, compared to the Model 3 at 350 volts.

When asked about it on the earnings call, Tesla stated their main reason to not increase voltage is their existing charger network.

FriedPickles··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
So why isn't TWTR trading at $54.20? There must be a significant chance this won't go through. Indeed, the deal is "Subject to the approval of Twitter stockholders".

Stockholders are holding it because they believe it's worth more than its current price. And Elon's offer is only slightly more than the current price. The board members do not hold much stock at all. It seems this might fail at shareholder vote.

FriedPickles··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
I wish I could, but I honestly don't know. All I know for sure is that using the ground pin 100% fixes it. If anybody on here could explain it, I'd be super grateful!
FriedPickles··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
I just found this too. So strange to have a useless prong--maybe it's just for mechanical support? IMO if thats the case they should make the whole prong plastic to indicate its lack of electrical function.
FriedPickles··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Oh wow! Sure enough, the UK adapter _has_ the ground pin, but it's not connected to anything .

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/17575/how-to-prope...

Alright if I sell any of this North American grounded version, I'll make one for y'all across the pond!

FriedPickles··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
The sensation comes from the Macbook case voltage differing from that of ground, and finding a path to ground through your body. Sometimes, when you feel the sensation coming from the computer, if you lift your feet off the ground the sensation stops. This is because you are no longer a path to ground.

It's totally possible for this path to ground to go through two humans, making it feel like their skin is buzzing! For example, if your friend is in bed using a Macbook, they're insulated from ground and thus at Macbook case voltage. If you stand on the ground beside them and touch them, the current now finds a path to ground through both your bodies!

FriedPickles··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Glad you like it! But I thought the UK duckhead already has a ground pin?

FriedPickles··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
When you plug a Macbook in with the included two-prong power adapter, sometimes it buzzes slightly when you stroke it gently (ground loop). Im working with a factory to make a grounded duckhead adapter to fix this.

FriedPickles··on Buy a coal mine, drive a gas guzzler, and other uses of reverse logic
To further develop the idea of letting EVs go to people who will drive them the most, the true bottleneck is batteries. So, the problem is to get batteries on the road in a way that they will displace the most gas miles as soon as possible.

This suggests a far more effective strategy of first replacing the fleet with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), then in a second stage, replace those with full EVs. For most city vehicles, a PHEV will electrify the majority of the miles with a fraction of the battery capacity.

Driving an EV is a green status symbol now. I wonder if they could in the future be viewed as "battery hogs".

FriedPickles··on We Could Brighten Clouds to Cool the Earth
Ha, "brighten clouds". The clouds would be brighter for the ten lucky occupants of the ISS. For the rest of us, this would more aptly be called "sky darkening".
FriedPickles··on Phones containing magnets inhibit implantable cardioverter defibrillators
It's a PSA: if you have an implanted defibrillator, don't keep iPhone 12 in a shirt pocket. No need for any more drama than that. Reminds me of antennagate, to which Jobs responded: "Don't hold it that way."
FriedPickles··on There Is a Tennis Ball Shortage Too Now
Tennis balls always felt like a planned obsolescence item to me. Are we really unable to make balls that don't lose their bounce after a few matches? Or a tennis ball that can be reinflated?

I'm sure longevity will always be traded for weight and bounciness at the extremes, but for general play it's time for a reusable tennis ball.

FriedPickles··on $28.50 Beer at LaGuardia Sparks Audit of New York Airport Concession Prices
Cant wait for a YC startup to build a marketplace matching travelers with extra snacks to hungry folks at the same airport! Hmm or maybe its "just add water" beer you can get through security. What reaction will make ethanol? ;)
FriedPickles··on The worst volume control UI in the world (2017)
Ford moved volume control to the touchscreen, but people wanted a knob. Solution? They stuck a knob to the touchscreen. Under the knob is an artificial "finger" that touches the screen.

I haven't used it personally so all I can say is it's a hilarious solution.

FriedPickles··on Tesla Says Autopilot Makes Its Cars Safer. Crash Victims Say It Kills
Hmm I think if a vehicle is moving even 5 mph it would be easily picked up by radar, and its only truly stationary things that are a radar "blind spot".

I suspect its a vision or fusion problem--as the article points out, the lighting wasn't great.

Why doesn't the car use ultrasound for AEB? Perhaps risk of false positives coupled with the fact that its range is so short it would only have time for limited braking anyway?

FriedPickles··on Tesla Says Autopilot Makes Its Cars Safer. Crash Victims Say It Kills
Radar is a critical component of Autopilot and every other automatic cruise control system to my knowledge. So it was almost certainly active. A Tesla with failed radar system would not allow the driver to engage AP.
FriedPickles··on Tesla Says Autopilot Makes Its Cars Safer. Crash Victims Say It Kills
Human fault aside, anybody care to speculate why Autopilot failed here? Was it a shortcoming of the radar, the vision system, or the fusion if the two? Is ultrasound used at all for AP or auto emergency braking?

I recently watched a great talk by Andrej Karpathy about Teslas transition away from radar towards vehicle speed estimation using only vision: https://youtu.be/gZ2SeiLjaEc

I wonder if it would have prevented the tragic outcome here.
