THE TRUTH IS A LEMON MERINGUE!

FridayoLeary··on Pilots taken to hospital after reported cockpit stabbing on Israel-bound flight
Wow. Apparently both pilots were incapacitated, which to my knowledge has never happened before in the history of commercial aviation. Luckily there were two other pilots on board who took control. Wild story.
FridayoLeary··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
touch grass.
FridayoLeary··on Best of British Design
Two interesting choices. The Tube map is on the list. It's been massively downgraded in recent years, becuase the people updating it have no appreciation of what made it great. Here's a tip; if it's not a train and it doesn't go underground then it shouldn't be on the map.

The Union Jack is another interesting choice, because these days apparently it's a racist symbol.

Angel of the North is another interesting choice, becuase i've been there and it's the most overrated, featureless lump of metal ever. Cool that they made it I guess, but they could have done more imho.

FridayoLeary··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Basically every week there's another story that makes it onto the news about yet another outrageous apprehension. 60,000 arrests or so over the last couple of years IIRC. What's disgraceful is that for years the police whined that they didn't have enough resources because of Tory budget cuts, something which I can personally attest, and then you get this...
FridayoLeary··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Yeah, but in the UK it's systemic and on a national scale. It would be less obnoxious if they were really good at fighting regular crime, but they are atrocious at that.

So yes, we might not be so dreadful compared to Hicksville, US or some craphole country like India, but that's a very low bar for the police of a G5 nation.

Absolutely go ahead and make sweeping generalisations about the state of the police in the UK. It's all true (except if anyone claims they are systemically racist, or some other clickbaity nonsense).

FridayoLeary··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
Congragulations you have just rediscovered conservatism.
FridayoLeary··on China Holds Sensitive F-35 Parts Diverted to Hong Kong from Australia
I know a third of HN thinks China are good guys, but this is legitimately worrying.
FridayoLeary··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
That's a word salad.
FridayoLeary··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Obviously, because then you can focus your attention to that specific group.IE, if cable theft is exclusively carried out by white people from kensington then whenever something is stolen, you can just go there and catch the criminals.

Criminals should be locked up in jail.

FridayoLeary··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
>I used to work for a large British Telecoms company, that shall remain nameless. They regularly suffered from certain mobile sections of the community stealing metal.

I cannot imagine which entities you could possibly be alluding to;)

>Once the law changed to make it a crime to buy scrap metal without a paper trail that cut that down massively.

No, you don't understand, it's free healthcare and housing they really need.

Seriously, I remember it being an epidemic about 13 years ago or so, I wondered what happened. Banning people from buying stolen metal is such an obvious step that I wonder how the UK government ever thought of it.

FridayoLeary··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
I think you mean Sir Francis Drake.
FridayoLeary··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
Did you say COVID 19?
FridayoLeary··on Swedish parliament abolishes permanent residence visas for migrants
Happens to be the grifters are mostly pro fertility, make of that what you want.
FridayoLeary··on Swedish parliament abolishes permanent residence visas for migrants
The asylum system is being massively abused. It's turning people in the UK into single issue voters.
FridayoLeary··on UK businesses brace for jet fuel rationing
Couldn't agree more. Our Navy is a joke. We can barely muster a single destroyer. Burning goodwill with Trump is foolish when europe is completely dependant on the US to defend them from Russia. I don't know what the strategic thinking is here. Demonstrate to the entire world that we are pathetic weaklings and the us that we're useless dependants?

This war might be dumb but it was also predictable. Why were these no contingencies? Or to quote Churchill "If you want peace you have to prepare for war".

FridayoLeary··on UK businesses brace for jet fuel rationing
otoh it's probably great for internal tourism. We get to keep more money in the country.
FridayoLeary··on BYD overtakes Tesla and Kia as the best-selling EV brand in key overseas markets
Ok but we are talking about tens of billions versus tens of millions. And some good old fashioned protectionism which has limited effect on the global market which we are discussing at the moment.
FridayoLeary··on How David Sacks crashed and burned in the White House
Allegedly he'll pick up the phone even for numbers he doesn't recognise. I guess to convince him you have to make it clear how your idea will increase the glory and honour of Donald J Trump.

In all seriousness i think that combo is better then a senior citizen who can barely be reached by his own advisors and is unclear how much of the situation he actually understands. (with Trump it's either zero, Fox News or 4d chess depending on who you ask, but the answer will always be given with confidence).

FridayoLeary··on How David Sacks crashed and burned in the White House
I'm struck by the wild recklessness and unrestrained power of these administration employees. Musk is the most prominent example. I've never even heard of Sacks until now. If it's any consolation these guys crashing and burning seems to be the rule. Trump likes results and hates headaches.

One exception is Jared Isaacman the billionaire head of NASA who experienced a bit of a roller coaster. Unlike the previous 2 i think he will actually do a good job.

One thing that stands out about Trump is how accessible he is. Apparently he takes cold calls and will listen to ideas from anyone (this includes laura loomer, but still).

FridayoLeary··on BYD overtakes Tesla and Kia as the best-selling EV brand in key overseas markets
This is not surprising as other manufacturers continue moving away from producing cheap cars. One notable exception is dacia.

For all the China lovers here it's not a clear sign of Chinese superiority. I saw a video on youtube recently exploring BYD. It's success is due to the fact that the Chinese government as part of their plan to dominate the global car industry gives them massive amounts of money. Which manufacturer can compete with that? European tariffs in the near future looks likely.

Among other things the video explores some of BYD's shadier practices including artificially inflating domestic sales and not paying suppliers for up to 9 months.

I have my doubts whether their success is sustainable.

FridayoLeary··on Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent
Youtube is virtually unwatchable without it. I honestly have no idea how most people cope. Truth is, even with an adblocker there's so much rubbish on the page that gets in my way. Invidous is much better but it's too unreliable.

Sites that autoplay a video, which follows you as you scroll are the worst.

FridayoLeary··on Let's Buy Spirit Air
I actually like wizz. They are dirt cheap which is the only thing i care about. The ground crew don't openly despise you, unlike easyjet, they tolerate you and their cabins are all right. Just they don't have any customer service if anything goes wrong.

"Wizz; Not the worst airline you've ever flown on"

FridayoLeary··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
Came here to say that. I've recently tried linux mint and it just works. You don't have to use the terminal if you don't want to, but i do enjoy using it. It's a breath of fresh air after windows. I'm now waiting for the year of the linux desktop. Though i'm not holding my breath. The average person will carry on using their system until it grinds to a halt under all the crap they've installed on it, and then complain their computer is too old.
FridayoLeary··on Investors pile into clean energy as Iran war drives push for energy security
You are projecting a lot. Europe is obsessed with green energy. As soon as we in the UK start seeing any tangible benefits of green energy i.e, lower prices which is the main thing anyone who isn't an upper middle class liberal cares about then i'll be on here singing it's praises.

Green energy is challenging because it has many times less density then every other form out there, among other reasons.

FridayoLeary··on A network smuggling Starlink tech into Iran to beat internet blackout
>However unpoular the IRGC or the Supreme Leader are in Iran, the US and Israel are less popular.

That's just wishful thinking on your part. Every iranian i speak to curses their regime and praise trump and netanyahu. Their level of support for the people bombing their country is incredible.

FridayoLeary··on UAE to leave OPEC
Which he responded to feebly.
FridayoLeary··on UAE to leave OPEC
You have another thing which is that MBS (correctly) felt comfortable ignoring Biden. If he'd slighted Trump in that way it would probably take 2 private jets to undo the damage.
FridayoLeary··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
And you can do it for much less if you want. I've replaced phone batteries with 6 dollars worth of tools and a hairdryer. You can buy glue or sticky gaskets for next to nothing as well if you care about waterproofing.
FridayoLeary··on Record wind and solar saved UK from gas imports worth £1B in March 2026
Nice to see you again. Yeah, i feel it's a political thing where green initiatives are being pushed against the interest and benefit of voters. The benefits are continually overhyped and frankly in the UK we are seeing none of them. I actually quite like the idea of renewables and don't entirely understand Trumps pathological hatred of them, but i don't think politicians hamstringing our economy to win green points with their pals is a good thing. Also what's the plan here? Fall years behind the rest of the world while we switch over and then expect to magically catch up somehow?
FridayoLeary··on Haunting Photos Show the Aftermath of the Kursk Submarine Disaster in 2000
The story depresses me a little. One of the greatest engineering marvels in history, destroyed by stereotypical Russian negligence, incompetence and corruption and more then 100 lives lost in the process. The Soviets for all their many sins were at least capable of building incredible things, the protections on the nuclear reactor held up, for example, preventing a massive environmental catastrophe.
