FridayoLeary··on Iran Protests Enter Third Straight Day as Students Join In
Yes.

Iran inflicted hezbolla on Lebanon, Assad on syria, persecutes their own ethnic minorities and has attacked saudi arabia, qatar and Israel. If they haven't outright stolen land that's only because they are 70 times the size of Israel.

All that off the top of my head.

FridayoLeary··on Iran Protests Enter Third Straight Day as Students Join In
I don't know. It's possible that one of their hundreds of indiscriminately fired missiles might land there. Iirc the sole casualty of one of their major attacks was a gazan in the West Bank.
FridayoLeary··on Iran Protests Enter Third Straight Day as Students Join In
It will probably be crushed like all the other protests, unfortunately. But iran is in a worse state then it's ever been. The catalyst for this round is a currency collapse and a looming water crisis. Sadly, the Revolutionary corps seem well funded from oil money.

At the moment Iran is rebuilding it's rocket stockpile with help from china (something which Israel and the US should be much more proactive about IMO) in preparation for the next round of hostilities in which they will no doubt be humiliated again. They are probably hoping to hit more then 1 hospital and 3 residential blocks next time and retain what's left of their shattered ambitions and ego.

Still we can always hope for a regime collapse. From a foreign policy point of view they are weaker then ever. Security wise i don't know how they are doing.

FridayoLeary··on Nicolas Guillou, French ICC judge sanctioned by the US and “debanked”
She is the worst possible representative the palestinians could have. She makes such wild statements that it actually makes it easy for Israel to dismiss her as pro hamas.
FridayoLeary··on Nicolas Guillou, French ICC judge sanctioned by the US and “debanked”
The same goes for israel, which provides some helpful context. "Us sanctions ICC for abusing their power"

Not even close. The nearest equivalent is Prime Ministers Questions which is a regular staged event.

Look at the debates from 2015 where Trumps opponents are rendered speechless by his overbearing personality. He makes himself the centre of everything and is completely shameless about it. He's an American phenomenon. BUT, the reason it works is because he means what he says and does what he says he'll do. America has always appreciated straight talkers more then Europe.

FridayoLeary··on Maybe the default settings are too high
Not just America. But it's partly a cultural thing. If someone would imitate the style of a century ago, he would be mocked for it and considered a self indulgent show off. The best example i can bring is Jacob Reese Mogg, otherwise known as The Rt Hon Gentleman from the 18th century.

One thing that is thankfully unique to America is that rudeness as a debating tactic can win elections.

FridayoLeary··on Maybe the default settings are too high
It's interesting you mention that. Even Obamas detractors admit he spoke well. True, but i find JFKs speeches are on a different level from that. And it's not just him, but the contrast is particularly striking.

Now in the UK all we get are monotonous robots or people who have clearly had intensive coaching in how to speak in a clear. Decisive. Direct. Way, to inspire confidence and project competence. The two qualities entirely absent in most of our politicians.

The less said about the other side of the pond the better.

FridayoLeary··on Microsoft please get your tab to autocomplete shit together
Was the original menu so bad? Your one has zero discoverability, which is the main feature of the old menu, and something which was degraded, but not completely killed off on the newer versions.
FridayoLeary··on Microsoft please get your tab to autocomplete shit together
Never saw the point of them. I prefer static content, something which most web designers can't wrap their heads around.

Easy navigation is something Mac sucks at for no good reason. I don't know why Windows is trying to degrade their advantage.

FridayoLeary··on Microsoft please get your tab to autocomplete shit together
I'm convinced that the win10 Start Menu was the single worst thing microsoft inflicted upon us in that OS. I imagine that particular discussion went like this:

Exec1:"We have a semi decent os with a refreshingly updated UI that should stay relevant for a decade. How can we make it better?"

Exec2: "why not replace the perfectly good start menu we have with an ugly, oddly proportioned rectangle with animated ads for our products."

Exec3: "Sounds great! Just make sure it has a quarter of the information density of the old one and takes up twice the screen space."

I haven't used Win11 enough to discover how they have managed to further degrade the experience, but at least it looks nicer.

FridayoLeary··on AMD entered the CPU market with reverse-engineered Intel 8080 clone 50 years ago

Apparently by ripping off their military customers.

Why is that a primary source?

FridayoLeary··on Inside CECOT – 60 Minutes [video]
Of course there is. Freedom is a pretty fundamental human right. We don't mind taking it away from some people, sometimes permanently. Then of course the death penalty is a thing.

Now organised abuse, or even not taking steps to prevent such abuse is accepted to be a bad thing by most of society so that shouldn't happen. But my concern isn't directed in any way towards violent gangsters that held an entire country hostage.

FridayoLeary··on AI's real superpower: consuming, not creating
I have to agree. People moan that the ai summary is rubbish but that misses the point. If i need a quick overview of a subject i don't necessarily need anything more then a low quality summary. It's easier then wading through a bunch of blogs of unknown quality.
FridayoLeary··on United 777-200 fleet faces an uncertain future after Dulles engine failure
The airlines deserve no money above the price of a ticket. The way i see it the hold comes free with the rest of the plane. I see no reason why i need to pay another 40 pounds to bring a case, so i will shamelessly abuse my allowance. (if it was a reasonable amount like a tenner, that would be a different story, as it stands it's a cash grab)
FridayoLeary··on UK House of Lords attempting to ban use of VPNs by anyone under 16
Nobody asked for it. Digital ID is being introduced to help the government, not the people.
FridayoLeary··on South Korea – A cautionary tale for the rest of humanity
By that stage most mothers have already formed emotional bonds to their children which can't easily (at all?) be replaced even by a father. Raising a child isn't some sort of equation, Marx.
FridayoLeary··on South Korea – A cautionary tale for the rest of humanity
I think we are coming close to some of the issues causing the current fertility crisis.
FridayoLeary··on South Korea – A cautionary tale for the rest of humanity
Here's a recent comment thread from the parent. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46125949

>I currently think the opposite—that humanity is inherently flawed, and that the vast majority of humans will always live miserably.

His user name has a korean vibe to it. If my suspicions are correct then they could be exhibit a of the problem SK is facing.

FridayoLeary··on South Korea – A cautionary tale for the rest of humanity
>Why not have dedicated facilities that handle raising children professionally?

Because to even contemplate that means dismissing the entire notion of a parent child bond. Of course socialism, with it's inherent disdain of existing social structures have tried collective living, famously some kibbutzim in israel tried it, but most sensible people are horrified by such an idea.

I want to let it go but i can't. The suggestion that trained professionals would somehow do a better job of raising a child then parents would is terrible. It's one of the worst ideas i've ever seen here.

FridayoLeary··on South Korea – A cautionary tale for the rest of humanity
North Korea may well win by simply waiting.

Don't flag me for this, i'm just playing devils advocate here. One of the main arguments i've heard against the narrative that the feminist movement freed women to do whatever they want is that instead they are now expected to work for a living. Many women want to have a career and don't want a family, so fine. But many that do find themselves unable to do so. The fact is that once only one member of the family had to go out to work now it's both. I know you can poke holes in that argument, but i feel it has some substance. Of course one comment can't cover any nuance, you would need a book for that. The article even touches onto this effect i described but fails to investigate it at all.

If you want women to raise families you can't also want them to have careers. You can probably draw a venn diagram of how those 2 things can overlap.

FridayoLeary··on Israel used Palantir technologies in pager attack in Lebanon
There you go.

There is no state organised war crimes going on, just normal war. If you can't understand the distinction that's your problem not mine. In my opinion Israels actions in Gaza fall well within the actions of a legitimate war, to the extent warfare can be legitimised. I'm not commenting on individual cases, and anyway those are not relevant to my argument.

FridayoLeary··on Israel used Palantir technologies in pager attack in Lebanon
That's just wishful thinking.

I would argue that by going after Israel in such a blatantly biased way the ICC and the UN have fallen to precisely the sort of groups you want to use them against.

Not saying the ICC can't be useful, you would just have to massively limit the scope of their "authority" to realistic targets. I.e. South American dictators and various warlords. And of course islamic terrorists.

Plenty of international law works because it actually serves a useful purpose for states like shipping. Countries don't like domestic terrorists and crime organisations. They would also prefer africa to be developed so they can trade.

FridayoLeary··on Israel used Palantir technologies in pager attack in Lebanon
What for? To issue arrest warrants against dead terrorists and prime ministers who kill terrorists?

They should stick to african warlords, maybe they can make a difference there.

FridayoLeary··on Israel used Palantir technologies in pager attack in Lebanon
What would you prefer? Israeli tanks blowing their way through families and bombing beirut to rubble to get at the Hezbolla terrorists? War was inevitable, the amazing actions of the mossad mitigated hundreds if not thousands of civilian casualties. What is your complaint, that they booby trapped the communications devices used exclusively by Hezbolla and not, i don't know, their kalashnikovs?

Don't hide behind technicalities of international law, tell me literally what else they could possibly have done with a better outcome. (please note in my world view, unlike many other people here, Israel rolling over and dying is not an acceptable solution)

FridayoLeary··on Apple's slow AI pace becomes a strength as market grows weary of spending
The parent is living in a different reality. They are all hugely popular products, just because he doesn't like them doesn't make it not true. And their introduction made a massive impact. Maybe not on the level of the iPhone but pretty impressive. The vision pro thing is a major flop. Nobody wanted one before it came out and nobody wants or needs one now and it's too expensive. It's a shame, because like e readers they are massively underused as a technology.
FridayoLeary··on Doctors' estimates of the feasibility of preserving the dying for future revival
If that's the case why aren't we doing more to encourage them?
FridayoLeary··on Doctors' estimates of the feasibility of preserving the dying for future revival
It's basically the same thing. What's stopping them from eventually losing interest or the non profit getting hijacked. I personally think the whole thing is a huge waste of money and i can imagine some guys in 50 years will think so too.
