FridayoLeary··on U.S. Formally Withdraws from World Health Organization
And it was the scientists and doctors of the WHO, who denied the existence of Covid until after every country in the world had shut down. I thought covid denial was a bad thing, but you're still getting downvoted... In response to your last question i've got no idea. I don't have any confidence the vaunted scientists got it right back then either. Just look at the disasters inflicted on countries and states that imposed heavy handed and IMO largely unnecessary covid measures.
FridayoLeary··on U.S. Formally Withdraws from World Health Organization
I think the WHO have a lot to answer for over the Covid debacle, international health cooperation is important but i don't care if WHO dies so another body can be built on it's ashes.
FridayoLeary··on Douglas Adams on the English–American cultural divide over "heroes"
What i find in dr who is that, at least at the beginning of every episode he doesn't even attempt to control what's happening even when his life is threatened. He's perfectly happy to let events unfold before stepping in.

And he hates using guns. He walks into danger with zero ability to defend himself besides some weird tool with painful limitations. In a way he's the most un American hero possible.

FridayoLeary··on Douglas Adams on the English–American cultural divide over "heroes"
So the exact opposite of David Brent. As the show goes on you don't discover a single thing to make you like him.
FridayoLeary··on The super-slow conversion of the U.S. to metric (2025)
They got rid of the penny. Just suggest that the Imperial system is some leftist conspiracy and they'll have moved over by the end of the month.
FridayoLeary··on Microsoft chief Satya Nadella warns AI boom could falter without wider adoption
Saying the quiet part out loud. Also isn't it his fault for investing in it the first place? Desperately finding things to put copilot onto in Windows isn't working out so well, it seems.
FridayoLeary··on Harvard legal scholars debate the state of the U.S. constitution (2025)
Which is something people arguing to make the house of Lords fully democratic don't appreciate.
FridayoLeary··on Harvard legal scholars debate the state of the U.S. constitution (2025)
The problem is the inflexibility of the constitution. If judges hadn't made the conscious decisions to turn the constitution into whatever they feel like, you'd be stuck in an even worse system of obsolete 18th century government.
FridayoLeary··on Harvard legal scholars debate the state of the U.S. constitution (2025)
Exactly. I won't even say it's a good system, but it's a straw man he's attacking. Also, maybe i'm over sensitive but i feel like he's insinuating the constitution is wrong because it's inherently racist and elitist. Maybe i'm straw manning but sadly that choice of words often goes hand in hand with such ideas and reckless, poorly thought out solutions.
FridayoLeary··on Harvard legal scholars debate the state of the U.S. constitution (2025)
It's defunct isn't it? If i'm being kind i would say that Americas strength comes from her people, not the constitution. I do believe that's the truth.

My main complaint on the constitution, is perfectly explained, ironically by the guy trying to defend it

>>Feldman cited another reason to defend the Constitution: It “has the capacity to evolve and change.” In 1919, he explained, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. “basically invented modern free speech law,” establishing, in a series of opinions, the now- fundamental concept that free expression should be permitted unless it poses a clear danger to others. “He understood that the Constitution had to evolve,” Feldman said.

So there you have it. The reason the constitution is great because judges allow themselves to interpret it in ways it was never intended to be interpreted (sometimes based on loyalty owed to a political faction or) that aligns with the way they want it to be, not the way it is.

That's frankly bonkers. Now i'll get back to my country run by the guys 2/3 of the country voted against, lords, a king and a supreme court run by activist judges with a large portion of our law outsourced to the EU...

FridayoLeary··on British redcoat's lost memoir reveals realities of life as a disabled veteran
I've never heard anyone suggest that Britain should have focused on improving conditions at home before engaging in empire building. I always assumed the two were not mutually dependent. The expenses in running an empire probably paid for itself and no doubt returned a lot on the initial investment (after all the whole point of having an empire is to secure better trading). Meanwhile the conditions in the cities were a separate problem, and one which was hard to fix quickly given the population explosion and the Industrial Revolution.

All of which to say, is while you raise an excellent point all the evidence i've seen suggests the two are entirely unrelated projects. If anything increasing globalisation in the long term increased prosperity for everyone involved (just not necessarily by equal amounts) and vastly improved conditions.

If anyone has a counterpoint, by which i mean historical complaints or serious academic analysis, i'm happy to hear. None of this is a moral judgement on the relative evils and merits of empires and Victorian England, which is not the topic, just my opinion of why from a practical standpoint one has very little to do with the other.

FridayoLeary··on Dead Internet Theory
Thanks for that. I had no idea either. I'm genuinely surprised Windows buries such a crucial thing like this. Or why they even bothered adding it in the first place when it's so complicated.
FridayoLeary··on Dead Internet Theory
You are absolutely right — most internet users don't know the specific keyboard combination to make an em dash and substitute it with two hyphens. On some websites it is automatically converted into an em dash. If you would like to know more about this important punctuation symbol and it's significance in identitifying ai writing, please let me know.
FridayoLeary··on How London cracked mobile phone coverage on the Underground
what's the address of the building?
FridayoLeary··on How London cracked mobile phone coverage on the Underground
>There’s another distance limit at work here, and that is the speed of light. It takes milliseconds for the signal in your phone to reach the hotel above ground and be handed over to the mobile network. But if it takes too long to get from phone to hotel, then your phone call s..a.rt..s..t o. br..e..ak up. As it happens, that distance is about 12km, so Boldyn needs nine hotels around London to cover the whole of the Underground

I find that interesting. Another fascinating rabbit hole the article has sent me down is that there is an unused station called north end. I've been down that stretch before and i had no idea. Does anyone know if passengers can see it?

FridayoLeary··on Briar keeps Iran connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when the internet goes dark
Thanks. Basically it depends on c travelling to another town. Also taking the risk of being caught with the content on it's phone. It looks like a great app and every little helps but hardly a game changer, unless i'm underestimating how bad it is in Iran?

If it works via tor it's probably also slow, but that's a small price to pay for not relying on a central server for people with legitimate concerns or problems with connecting.

FridayoLeary··on Briar keeps Iran connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when the internet goes dark
Can you expand on that? I'm from a developing country and we're very worried about what's going on in America. Is the situation really as bad as Iran?
FridayoLeary··on Briar keeps Iran connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when the internet goes dark
I'm still unclear how the stated goal of the title is achieved. My first assumption reading the title that it works something like airtags, but that is obviously nonsense. unless you are standing right next to the guy you want to message, how exactly does it work?
FridayoLeary··on US State Department Threatens UK over Probe into Elon Musk's X
Usually i'd be outraged at American overreach, but this is ofcom so i say more power to anyone who can bring them down a few notches. The same goes to Starmers government whose attitude to free speech seems to be that it's a necessary evil (to not lose elections), and something, along with the nhs that they need to pay lip service to every now and then.

I'm not getting my hopes up though. It's entirely possible that ofcom will just carve exemptions for large American companies, using their new powers to go after smaller, easier targets - which is what has been predicted since that awful online "safety" bill first came up.

But I'm not dumb either. While i do believe the current administration views European free speech rights with contempt i'm under no illusions this is the primary motivation behind this threat.

FridayoLeary··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
I would argue that in the context of ops complaint they are worse.
FridayoLeary··on The Cray-1 Computer System (1977) [pdf]
At the risk of sounding cliche i'll point out that ios probably uses several times the capacity of a cray 1 just to get the keyboard to work.
FridayoLeary··on JRR Tolkien reads from The Hobbit for 30 Minutes (1952)
It's a fantasy novel written primarily for entertainment. It's hard enough to write dwarves and elves, orcs are a necessary plot device. If you want you can imagine them as pitiable creatures who have been deprived of free will and have no choice but to act the way they do and loath themselves for it.
FridayoLeary··on Hacking a Casio F-91W digital watch (2023)
lots of spelling mistakes which is odd for such a meticulously detailed article. I'm going for the theory he's not an english speaker. Op is wrong, it's one of the most interesting things i've seen here in a while and truly in the spirit of hn.
FridayoLeary··on iOS 26 still struggles to gain traction with iPhone users
>But the most likely candidate is the new Liquid Glass look of the update.

That sentence feels like a chinese translation. Odd that a site named cult of mac will avoid using any technical terms in an article and assume the reader lacks basic background on Apples business model and how ios updates work.

FridayoLeary··on Report: Microsoft kills official way to activate Windows 11/10 without internet
every discussion like this has at least one of these comments. The year of the Linux Desktop must be nearly here. They've been predicting it for years already!
FridayoLeary··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
It's a great point. Maduro won't be missed by anyone. But the top posted comment here perfectly captured my feelings. There's the wider picture to look at. I personally would love it if America did that to Iran, Russia, Cuba etc, but i feel there should be more of a process and i'm allowed to be suspicious of the motives.

If Venezuela actually becomes a functioning country again and drugs, gangs and illegal immigrants stop flooding America then i personally would applaud the operation. Still, you really shouldn't just kidnap other countries presidents just like that as a general rule.

FridayoLeary··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Deportation to el salvador of course. You really need to keep up.

A more important question is if he does get sentenced will Trump just pardon him https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9qewln7912o

FridayoLeary··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
At least he's honest, even if it's more like he lacks an effective filter. "bannana republics" and "bigger gun diplomacy" don't quite describe Trumps approach to foreign policy. One thing i can say about the operation is that it's a lot cheaper and less bloody then a ground invasion.

Someone should tell him Iran has loads of oil and China is getting it all...
