FrankyHollywood··on Is a shared database in microservices actually an anti-pattern?
"If one shared database can serve your system well then you don't need microservices".

Exactly, nobody is even thinking about it anymore because "Twitter has microservices, Netflix uses MSA".

Microservice architecture comes with a cost, like more complex deployment strategy (there are more dependencies) and overhead in transaction management, not to mention debugging a problem which hits multiple domains/services.

FrankyHollywood··on Four-day week trial: study finds lower stress but no cut in output
Seems a bit to good to be true... working 20% less, and still have 'increased productivity'?

I myself work 4 days a week, which I really enjoy. However, sometimes with a major bug I make extra hours, the work has to get done! You can do more in 6 days than in 4.

For that sake, how much further can you push it, can you increase productivity 20% by working 3 days instead of 4?

FrankyHollywood··on Schools in England Introduce a New Subject: Mindfulness
yes you're right, some books can really be insightful, I've read some myself :)

Unfortunately I see people around me who drown in the therapy/self-help circuit. A lot of money is involved, and they keep running in circles. It seems to become a self fulfilling prophecy.

If you spend to much time reflecting on your life, it becomes part of your life which prevents you from really living. Before saying anymore clichés I'll stop, and go do something :)

FrankyHollywood··on Schools in England Introduce a New Subject: Mindfulness
I'm always puzzled with the fact that people search for surrogate solutions instead of pursuing the real issue.

If you don't feel well there is so much you can do. Make serious effort in making friends, join a sports club or something else you like, solve long running conflicts with other people, don't over- or under achieve on a level which doesn't fit you (school/work), be proud with the things you accomplish instead of never being satisfied, etc...

Perhaps it just seems easier to buy another self-help book, and take a mindfulness class.

FrankyHollywood··on You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss (2008)
Definitly not! Few years ago I worked as developer at a startup. 4 devs, 2 sales, 1 marketing and 1 CEO.

It was a mess, sales made horrible promisses to customers, and letting us build demo after demo. The CEO was going round every day pushing people to work harder. And everytime the guy read some tech news we had to drop everything and switch technology to be 'more innovative'.

Right now I'm working in a large company (> 1000 employees)

I have a steady budget for my team. There are targets offcourse, but overall a lot of freedom to do with my team we think is best. Management doesn't get involved in any tech descisions. Wouldn't wanne go back to my startup years...

Great design. I have a friend who took it a bit further, and build the Fusor with Lego bricks. Never since any worries about energy bills, he went completely off the grid!

FrankyHollywood··on In Praise of Mediocrity
I think this goes far beyond just hobby's and leisure activities. Society as a whole doesn't seem to accept mediocrity anymore.

Take a look at the actors from 80's hit movie 'Ghostbusters' http://cdn-media.hollywood.com/images/l/ghostbustersthetrio....

Would these guys be casted today? I can't imagine, we see mostly perfect faces on television.

Movies and television are not even the worst, advertising is insane. If you count the number of 'perfects' in some commercials you easily hear it 4 to 5 times in just a couple of seconds. You need perfect skin, a perfect dream kitchen, a perfect ride in a perfect car, etc.

Why do people want this? Can't blame it all to hollywood...

FrankyHollywood··on In Praise of Mediocrity
Not really, I have hobby's just as my friends have them, but I feel rare. I don't use social media, and I don't have Netflix or hbo. As a software engineer I have a lot of screen time. At home sometimes I watch a movie or do some gaming, but I don't hit the 5hr average. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/01/business/media/nielsen-su...

Doing a lot non digital things in my free time is a conscious decision. The fun thing is you meet a lot of people who are active I as well.

FrankyHollywood··on EU to stop changing the clocks in 2019
I never understood why this is such a binary discussion, either wintertime, or +1 hour for summer.

Why not settle right in the middle, +0.5 hour = EU time :)

FrankyHollywood··on Leaving Apple and Google: /e/ first beta
Great initiative, have been looking for an alternative for some time. I had high hopes for Sailfish (https://sailfishos.org/) but for a while it only ran on Sony Xperia, current status not clear to me. Anyone has experience with Sailfish?

Will have a look at /e/ this weekend!

FrankyHollywood··on An entrepreneur says 32-hour weeks ‘killed work ethic’ at his startup
I found it very interesting, we only hear about the successes of working less, and self steering teams. Ryan explains why this both didn't work for his company, and made company results drop.

FrankyHollywood··on Scrum disempowers developers
Dave has an interesting talk about it.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a-BOSpxYJ9M

My personal experience is any project where scrum actually works is a boring project, no interesting problem is predictable.

Fortunately I see mostly frustrated scrum masters, not understanding why planning fails :)

FrankyHollywood··on How a Special Diet Kept the Knights Templar Fighting Fit
The 'vegetable fasting days' seem a lot like the popular 5-2 diet. Only difference is these knight didn't need years of medical research to discover this, perhaps just years of poor health :)

FrankyHollywood··on What every programmer should know about memory, Part 1 (2007)
This one is also very usefull: http://igoro.com/archive/volatile-keyword-in-c-memory-model-...
FrankyHollywood··on “Clean code” isn't actually clean
Most guru's take an 'all or nothing' approach, this goes beyond programming, look at food-guru's "eat only carbs, never eat refined sugar" etc. This is for me the same as "always do TDD, never use static methods".

People without experience often look at guru's because they can not yet think for themselves.

I'm a developer in my 40s, have done a lot of projects in a lot of different companies. Having this experience gives me intuition about what to do in what situation. I just (think I) know when I should write a unit test and when not.

The 'all or nothing' attitude is created by people who want to be guru's and is followed by people who want to have some guidance.

This is not a bad thing, it takes time to shape yourself as a programmer. This takes years: http://www.norvig.com/21-days.html

Learn from the guru's, and be consious, people preaching an 'all or nothing' view of the world are NEVER right :)

FrankyHollywood··on Stop tech-driven problem-solving
Every new technology needs firing up, which means hype it and hope some people can do something usefull with it. It's hard to imagine new technology without hype, how else can a large group of people be aware of it existing at all?

The Amish decide 200 years ago 'lets stick with current technology'. It works, they have houses, food, friends, a living.

Why go further? This topic is almost existential :)

FrankyHollywood··on Enough
Thats true offcourse, dis-satisfaction can also be very positive.

Anyone knows the word for 'never having enough money, land or power and aquiring it at the cost of others'?

FrankyHollywood··on Enough
The whole piece is a bit verbose, but the writer has a point. A lot of people are never satisfied, and that doesn't make the world a better place.

The irony is unsatisfaction is rewarded. You can earn millions of dollars with making the world less beautifull, by selling people bad loanes or artificially keeping medicine prices high.

I don't know if people can learn to have enough, or 'the system' must enforce it a little bit.

FrankyHollywood··on Tabs, spaces and your salary – how is it really?
Nobody said anything about actual workweeks yet. I'm a developer working 4 days a week, earning a very decent 5 figure salary, no complains :)

Now I can imagine if a company pays you >100k you have to work 40+ hours a week. So annual salary should be corrected for actual working hours

FrankyHollywood··on Ask HN: Why does visual programming suck?

FrankyHollywood··on Ask HN: If all world leaders are women, would there be any war?
thats true offcourse, but those are examples of 100s of years of history. Any armed conflict I know about now is initiated by men.

And look at the average interest of men and women. Games they play, movies they watch, not many men like to see Bridget Jones and not may women like to see Vietnam war movies :)

I would assume, on average, women start a lot less conflict. Non of these woman are at war as far as I know : http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/03/08/women-leader...

FrankyHollywood··on They Used To Last 50 Years
well, Philips still is a billion dollar company today :)

I guess it depends on the market, if 'longest lasting bulbs' are a selling point, you lose the race. However, if all other manifactures like your business model they will follow.

Marketing is also important. Companies with best advertising often sell more than companies with the best products.

FrankyHollywood··on They Used To Last 50 Years
A while ago I read the biography of Anton Philips. He described a board meeting where they decided to make the lifetime of a light bulb 1000 hours instead of 5000. So they actually decided to make their product less good, only to get more (short term?) profit.

(some) people are never satisfied, always want more more more...

FrankyHollywood··on Let's stop bashing C#
Even if C# would be the most technical superior language ever made with every feature you could think of, a lot of developers still don't like it because:

- C# smells corporate, being used in many large scale business application.

- C# is developed by Microsoft, a billion dollar company itself

- The .NET platform is only partial open source

So facts don't matter much, it's about smell :)
