FrankenPC··on Disney's Practical Guide to Path Tracing [video]
How is that even possible? The beam incidence angular calculation (and multi path dispersion) creates insane complexity that must be computed on the fly to even make sense.

For instance: a beam hits some material and needs to reflect or worse, pass through via transparency. Another issue: If we are calculating on a per pixel basis, that means bundling multiple paths together to figure out what the weighted return will look like. How can this all be computed with any kind of efficiency without cheating?

FrankenPC··on Show HN: Liquid Guilloché
"A RIVER" looks like oscilloscope output. Maybe something from a more advanced digital scope with high speed differential signalling pattern analysis.
FrankenPC··on Show HN: WebGL voxel game with source
I use Chrome. Is that a specific setting?
FrankenPC··on Newegg vs. Patent Trolls: When We Win, You Win
This brings up a good point. I need to buy from the vendor that's doing some good with my money. Sometimes I hesitate to buy from Newegg because I can always find the parts cheaper (Hey! Rent's a killer on the West coast right now!) I think I'll buy PC parts solely from them for as long as they fight the patent trolls.
FrankenPC··on Show HN: WebGL voxel game with source
I got used to that years ago by purchasing a programmable game keypad. No one loves the lefty's.

I found I could only rotate for about 90 degrees plus/minus. I tried to circumvent the problem by dragging my cursor outside of the window and bringing it back in on the opposite side so I could continue rotating. Strangely, the game sensed I had come in from the opposite side and reset the rotation to the exact same 90 degrees. It's purposefully attempting to be infuriating.
FrankenPC··on How a car works (2012)
I second this. I've sunk quite a bit of time on that channel. Excellent explanations.
FrankenPC··on Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has died [pdf]
I love that. All that corporate maturity and yet the young gamer lived on. He was the perfect Nintendo president. How are they going to fill those shoes?
FrankenPC··on Understanding Neural Networks Through Deep Visualization
I wonder if there's a sort of JTAG port into the neural network to do direct scans of the individual neurons.
FrankenPC··on Ask HN: Share your best personal productivity tips and tricks
A few decades back when I still smoked cigarettes, I really enjoyed simply getting out of the office on a periodic basis to gain perspective. No more cigarettes, but I still stand up and walk around the block. Still works great.
FrankenPC··on How Much Does an Experienced Programmer Use Google?
There was Compuserve dialup. Expensive and slow as molasses.
FrankenPC··on Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules
Due to the down votes, I feel compelled to clarify: I meant as opposed to removing marriage from contractual language and using civil union instead.
FrankenPC··on SpaceX – Launch Vehicle Failure
Reminds me of that article about the Sony Aibo dogs ending their mechanical end of life. After 16 years, they are failing and they're no replacement parts.

Point being, if Sony had kept going with that incredibly sophisticated robotics tech (for the time) they would be an industry leader right now at a time when robotics is about to explode. Did Sony run out of funds? No. They abandoned the project because of fear for stockholder repercussions. That's what I meant by that comment. Sometimes stockholder flash back is enough to abandon a really great idea.

FrankenPC··on SpaceX – Launch Vehicle Failure
My only question is, is the real time telemetry at a high enough resolution that the exact cause of the explosion can be ferreted out? I'm guessing yes. This is another very important learning experience. One of countless thousands on the way to reliable space launch and recovery.

My only pessimistic thought in all this is that companies like Space X simply do not have the funds necessary to keep absorbing catastrophic loss and will just give up.

FrankenPC··on The Lonely End: in aging Japan, thousands die alone and unnoticed
You bring up a good point. There's no qualification test for wisdom. Is someone a bitter dogmatic psycho? Or are they warm and truly emotionally intelligent? No way to know. One problem is that there is no real regard for wisdom in modern American society. We value youth and energy over wisdom and depth. So, why even be bothered to think about such things?
FrankenPC··on The Lonely End: in aging Japan, thousands die alone and unnoticed
In my mind I see this as a social health crisis. The elderly provide an unbelievable amount of wisdom to the next generation. By abandoning them, we abandon our children's future. I think of the elderly as an essential vitamin for children. They impart valuable social memes and at the same time tell the children, by there mere existence in their lives, that we value our family and when the children's time comes to age and pass away, they can expect to be valued as well.

In other words, by abandoning our elderly, we're sending a clear message to our children that human life has no inherent value if you can't produce. No wonder children in industrialized nations can't seem to feel a sense of belonging.

FrankenPC··on Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules
Is it possible that LGBT marriage rights were officially recognized because it was becoming apparent that the next step was to strip religion out of the discourse? Thereby losing a valuable beachhead in society? Nah. To conspiracy theory-ish.
FrankenPC··on IPv4 Depletion
What happens to the private sector end nodes? Do routers perform NAT from IPV4 to IPV6?
FrankenPC··on Dropbox Is Struggling and Competitors Are Catching Up
I know I have a junk account I use only once or twice a year.
FrankenPC··on I spent the last 15 years trying to become an American and failed
I see. It would be the same as marrying just to get a green card.
FrankenPC··on I spent the last 15 years trying to become an American and failed
"Again, an employer can sponsor an employee's green card, but the employer must again bear the costs, which can run to the tens of thousands of dollars, and again the employee cannot offer to pay the cost."

Why don't you just reimburse the employer the costs?

FrankenPC··on Ask HN: Guide to becoming a dad?
Best advice ever. Children simply want to be loved and listened to.
FrankenPC··on Fun with Magic
Speaking purely to the professionalism and responsiveness of Magic, yes it's pretty impressive.
FrankenPC··on How for-profit prisons have become the biggest lobby no one is talking about
It's more like slave siphoning. Once someone is tagged as a criminal, there are seemingly endless ways to suck money from them, their families, the state, and the federal government. Each American indoctrinated into the criminal justice system in essence becomes that famous Duracell from the Matrix movie.
FrankenPC··on Why Doesn't Creativity Matter in Tech Recruiting?
I wonder the same thing. My code snippet database and the Google references have nearly everything I would need. But that doesn't work in an interview. They want to see you code on the spot with no backup resources including Google. They are looking for savants but they aren't paying the salaries to match the skills.
FrankenPC··on Why Doesn't Creativity Matter in Tech Recruiting?
I was a VB6/winforms expert at one point. Remember ADO? How about RDO? And when I say 'expert' I mean I made VB6 stand up and beg. Full error trapping, NT services, multi-tasking. I've forgotten more than many people know. Never mind all the other languages that have led me up to this point like Pascal and assembly.
FrankenPC··on Why Doesn't Creativity Matter in Tech Recruiting?
It's insane. At one point I was fully fluent in C#, Silverlight, all the HTML/CSS/Javascript necessary to successfully embed Silverlight, MVC/MVVM, SQL implementation and design, etc etc etc etc... Being a full stack .NET programmer is just as crazy as being a full stack Javascript.
FrankenPC··on Why Doesn't Creativity Matter in Tech Recruiting?
That's not a bad idea.
FrankenPC··on Why Doesn't Creativity Matter in Tech Recruiting?
Used to. Not anymore. I feel like I'm the last of the old school waterfall experts. Everyone wants lockstep scrum only continuous development. I can do that, but then I have to get past the lack of a formal education and ultimately I'm only offered mid level positions.
FrankenPC··on Why Doesn't Creativity Matter in Tech Recruiting?
The bar for "grade A" is REALLY freakin high. I'm not talking about applying for low level dev positions. I only apply for senior or higher positions. Autodidacts like me are no longer interesting to companies.
