FrankBooth··on Declined Proposal: A built-in Go error check function, “try”
Go's the perfect language for sharecropping developers.

That was added after my post.

I'm not sure you have the right to be upset about lack of attributions when your articles lack attributions for the sources of information and all of the images.
FrankBooth··on Zoox and Its $800M Robo Taxi Dream [video]
so, you're saying it would be impossible to fake the demo with, for example, a remote driver?
FrankBooth··on Linux: Introduce restartable sequences system call
Thanks for seeing this work through, Mathieu.

> possibly user-space task scheduling

I'm very interested in this aspect. Do you have a sense of whether there's enough in the kernel now to build this, or are there still pieces missing?

FrankBooth··on Ask HN: Will HN allow account and comment deletions?
Is there a nice summary of how to do this available? Or, if not, would you mind posting a few pointers?
FrankBooth··on MPEG-2 Patents Have Expired
MPEG-2 TS as a container, something more modern for the video/audio codecs.
FrankBooth··on I don’t know who the Web Audio API is designed for
Yes, in fact the problem here is that Rogers barely considered spec input from outside (and others at Google have continued this behavior). A committee's design would've resulted in a better outcome in this case.
FrankBooth··on I don’t know who the Web Audio API is designed for
H.264 is a video codec.

If you mean AAC or MP3, which are usually used in the audio track along side H.264 in an MP4 or MP2-TS container, nobody outside of low power/embedded bothers to decode the audio codec in hardware, it's just not worth it.

FrankBooth··on Washington Post integrates Talk – Mozilla’s open-source commenting platform
> So in other words, he was told if he didn't resign he'd be fired.

External pressure, not internal.

> I seriously doubt that, unless checking a person's political donations is a standard course of action Mozilla takes

No need to do an investigation, it had been raised by people who were upset by the action years earlier.

> otherwise, why did no one in the "community" take issue with his donation in the several years prior?

They did, years earlier.

You could've found this out yourself, but instead you decided to make trouble here instead. It's best to stick to topics you understand.

FrankBooth··on A very valuable vulnerability
Huh, I was just reading about that.
FrankBooth··on What Sid Meier’s Video Game Empire Got Right and Wrong About ‘Civilization’
> Slavery, the single-most important economic institution of recent millennia, is entirely absent in the series.

Not quite accurate. Civilization 4 has a Slavery civic, which allows you to work your own population to death for faster production.

FrankBooth··on SQLite with a Fine-Toothed Comb
Hipp is not a professor.
FrankBooth··on Porsche 919 – Racecar Engineering
Also because it's a stressed member, which is significantly easier to build in a V layout than a flat layout.

The lower CoG thing with flat engines is kind of a myth. You end up with the exhaust headers below the engine, so the engine sits higher than an equivalent V layout engine would.

FrankBooth··on Finding bugs in SQLite, the easy way
Of course they did. So did the OpenSSL developers. It wasn't an accident. It's simply a design decision that has a set of costs associated with it.
FrankBooth··on OpenSSL Security Advisory
I find it more apropos to suggest that they're all cooks, but meth cooks.
FrankBooth··on Graydon Hoare on Rust 1.0.0-alpha
It doesn't seem as healthy to me, or as interesting a language, as it was before Hoare was unceremoniously booted from the project.
FrankBooth··on What It's Like When the FBI Asks You to Backdoor Your Software
Right, that explains why we hear about this exact scenario playing out all the time... oh wait.
FrankBooth··on What It's Like When the FBI Asks You to Backdoor Your Software
Sounds like a publicity stunt or a hoax.
FrankBooth··on How Google’s Jeff Dean became the Chuck Norris of the Internet
> That being said, Chuck Norris is a hell of a nice guy and I wish him the best, even if he isn't a bad-ass.

You must be joking.

FrankBooth··on Skip lists: fast PyPy-compatible ordered map in 89 lines of Python
With the "and distribute" or "and/or distribute" wording? Different factions have expressed preferences for each option.
FrankBooth··on Why aren't we all using Japanese toilets?
Steak and strippers.
FrankBooth··on Elite: Dangerous
Only one of the original developers. Ian Bell is not involved, as far as I can tell. And I wouldn't expect him to be, given the pair had a fairly public falling out many years back.
FrankBooth··on IdTech 4, 15% frame rate increase through semiautomatic paralellization
When were you in the AAA world, Jonathan?
FrankBooth··on Disney to Acquire Lucasfilm Ltd.
A reboot is more likely to be gritty given the fashion of the times. Expect to see Han Solo made into a heroin addicted jazz critic who's not a smuggler.
FrankBooth··on The San Francisco Games Revolution Is Over
Complain to Apple.
FrankBooth··on Retina Revolution - smaller images with better quality
Stream compression benefits from locality of data, so the ability to merely rearrange data can be quite beneficial.

GPL has zero influence. Please do the barest of research into licensing before invoking the GPL boogieman.

Without the Banshee developers, Ubuntu wouldn't have Banshee to ship, so it's not particularly debatable who deserves the lion's share. Especially considering Ubuntu's incredibly weak contributions to open source in general. What Ubuntu did there was tacky. If they had handled it better (discussing it with upstream and working out a profit sharing scheme), at least it would've been slightly less disgusting.

They did the same with Firefox.
