Hi! I'm a PHP cowboy coder, ffmpegger of videos and regexer of subtitles.

FranOntanaya··on Ask HN: What is wrong with Twitter?
Part of the solution could be to separate connecting from subscribing. People feel they would lose some kind of social capital from unfollowing an existing connection, but would rather not see most posts from that account.

I don't put much value on Twitter's social capital so I arbitrarily stick to 150 accounts. That seems to work for me.

FranOntanaya··on Poor Software QA Is Root Cause of TAY-Fail (Microsoft's AI Twitter Bot)
They could have chucked it in some IRC channel and nobody would have batted an eye. Just another run of the mill chat bot.
FranOntanaya··on Google opens access to its speech recognition API
CMUSphinx is really easy to set up, and then being able to train it for one's specific domain probably beats state of the art with one-size-fits-all training.
FranOntanaya··on Alert: NPM modules hijacked
Module repositories have been a thing for decades. Even a platform as crusty-old as WordPress doesn't allow repository take-overs for plugins. Surely someone had some experience outside npm to think about this.
FranOntanaya··on Exploring Rust (from C#)

FranOntanaya··on Motion Design Is the Future of UI
That's like a permanent "tutorial mode" though, why do we treat users as if they would never learn.
FranOntanaya··on Motion Design Is the Future of UI
For whatever is worth, animated UI has been a thing in window managers forever, and I've never had a good experience with it. If it was named "Forced latency" design it wouldn't be so sexy.
FranOntanaya··on Serious Sam’s Serious Engine source code released
Or even worse, it's not released until there's noone left to answer about the licensing of the code and assets. The community that took over Microsoft Allegiance's code has been trying for years to find someone able to make decisions about it.
FranOntanaya··on Lufthansa jet and drone nearly collide near LAX
Several commercial models are already capped at 120m or so. With DIY ones though it's not so easy.
FranOntanaya··on Google Puts Boston Dynamics Up for Sale in Robotics Retreat
Perhaps there's a strong correlation between the people that get terrified by automation and the people that click ads.
FranOntanaya··on Why Neuroscientists Need to Study the Crow
I'd be tempted to look at it more as brain:sensor (including skin surface, muscle feedback etc.) ratio.

A small brain for a large amount of inputs means the brain's representation is much more aliased than perception, and the internal algorithms work despite very fuzzy input. Cause for that ratio probably being that the brain is very high pass and only cares about high input spikes (i.e. very dull sense of tact, but sensing a sting still matters, so it still needs a high skin sensor density).

While a large brain for a relatively smaller sensory input means the internal representation is more detailed, or it's even creating synthetic detail from internal models of perceptions at the same time as it processes inputs, which would be where problem solving and awareness capacities kick in.

FranOntanaya··on Google nabs Apple as a cloud customer
It sounds kind of inefficient though since different business types have extremely different bandwidth needs. So it's going to tax business by sector rather than by their ability to sustain it.
FranOntanaya··on Companies Want to Replicate Your Dead Loved Ones with Robot Clones
I've seen enough markov IRC log chatters to know where this is going -- any bot clone true enough to the original will end stored in the basement for being too socially inadequate.
FranOntanaya··on How Badoo Saved $1M Switching to PHP7
I think one overlooked good thing is how little drama I hear about the transition from 5.6 to 7. People seem to be moving on quickly (the large perf improvements help a lot). I feel it's not going to be long before almost anyone with a half skilled dev to care for it will be on 7 and we won't have a Python 2 vs 3 or Perl 5 vs 6 scenario.
FranOntanaya··on Show HN: USA visa refusal by country
Spain's rate went 11% higher too after 2011. Was there any policy change?
FranOntanaya··on YouTube now shows "An error has occurred" while ads running
Transcoding all those videos every time the ads need to change or to target every audience sounds nightmarish. It'd make sense for the most popular videos, but the long tail would definitely remain with sidecar ads.
FranOntanaya··on Blame Zoning, Not Tech, for San Francisco's Housing Crisis
The sale price of a house is always going to be capped by how much you could make instead by renting it. If the average rental makes $45K a year nobody would sell that house for $250K.
FranOntanaya··on DOD officials say autonomous killing machines deserve a look
Personal mines are autonomous weapons. Their target selection heuristic is very simple: "anyone walking over me must be an enemy combatant", but they are still a weapon automation.
FranOntanaya··on DOD officials say autonomous killing machines deserve a look
Arguably most conflicts are caused by people with much lower level concerns. Two opposing governments launching a drone war between them, due to some civilians being disgruntled at some other civilians, while these angry people watch from the sidelines, sounds very theatrical compared with governments lacking the political will or interest to stop some rebels from grabbing pointy sticks and fighting each other. Sort of how we have lots of countries with airforces, but current wars don't involve air vs air combat. People smart enough to use the technology don't seem to have that much taste for fighting other smart people.
FranOntanaya··on DOD officials say autonomous killing machines deserve a look
There's already a few.

FranOntanaya··on Making Robots Conscious of Their Mental State (2002)
I would collect huge amounts of statistical data from humans during self-awareness tasks -- and I mean everything, from reaction times to how often they pick their nose. Find the patterns, do the same with the computer where possible, compare. Eventually we'd catch the difference between self-awareness running bare-carbon and running at a higher "I'll do this because I learned it makes me get away as human" simulation context.
FranOntanaya··on Phan by Etsy – A Static Analyzer for PHP 7+
Not counterpoints. The comment above states that the pool of very good PHP developers is larger. This implies easier hiring (capacity to learn a new language is not relevant, because it works both ways), which, among other reasons, would be because they'll be applying first to PHP positions; and secondly, a very good PHP developer is far from somebody who just started.
FranOntanaya··on Star Citizen has raised $94M – where is it?
There are still servers running for Allegiance (search freeallegiance) and some development, since MS open sourced it and allowed the community to maintain it, but you have to check on weekends to get a game going. It was a pretty good teamwork exercise, it actually required players to think tactically and stay coordinated to overpower the other team.
FranOntanaya··on Show HN: Twitch Installs Arch Linux – A cooperative text-based horror game
I'm afraid they'll manage to launch vim and will never be able to get out.
FranOntanaya··on Neuroscientists use maps of people’s brains to predict reasoning ability
Scans might be easier to sell to parents when putting the child in a different educational path than an IQ test. IQ tests may be perceived as just an individual rating the child, and parents that aren't completely happy with a result will get in the mindset that the tester "rated the child wrong" or "didn't measure the right things." An actual brain scan may be harder to argue and more effective in the end from the parents' point of view.
FranOntanaya··on E-Book Sales Slip, and Print Is Far from Dead
I imagine the ebook is the one both providing greater value, and having a harder time competing for production resources -- while paper may be overcapacity now.
FranOntanaya··on The Mystery of Devil's Kettle Falls
Maybe they could use radar sounding and a big bag of passive reflectors floating upright.
FranOntanaya··on Hack: A typeface designed for source code
I use Hasklig, even though on a different language. I love having ligatures for common symbols. I should pick up fontforge again and adapt it to PHP

FranOntanaya··on The Global Bike-Share Boom: An Interactive History
Same. Disabling page styles and javascript makes it much more readable.
FranOntanaya··on For Sale in Spain: Entire Villages, Cheap
I saw lots of similar locations through my young years in Spain. Ultimately, it's just a somewhat damaged weather containment in the form of a pile of stones and mortar, with no other utility advantages than a dirt road, maybe a nearby river and some flat lots for home farming.

The only real advantage over any other random off the grid country side location is that building permits are a lot easier on existing constructions, even if they are crumbling and they have to be completely rebuilt.
