FractalHQ··on Ask HN: Why JavaScript experts tend to not use TypeScript?
This is really cool! TIL. At this point though, I feel like you might as well just use Typescript, no? You’ll get more features / tooling and cleaner syntax. I’m intrigued to learn more about advanced JSDoc now though, if anything to be more prepared if I’m ever forced to work with it in the future.
FractalHQ··on Dozens of malicious PyPI packages discovered targeting developers
I love this idea. But what about peer deps? And their dependencies? What if multiple deps share peer deps? Is there a simple way permissions could be resolved in the web of modules?

Also- tangential but I really wish people would stop using require and use ESM whenever possible. I cringe when I see `require` just as much as when I see `var` being used in 2022, but I’m not certain there’s never a good reason not to use ESM.

FractalHQ··on CD Projekt is remaking the first Witcher game in Unreal Engine 5
To be fair, they are also working on the Witcher 4 in Unreal Engine 5.
FractalHQ··on Turbopack, the successor to Webpack
Coincidentally, the primary maintainer of Rollup mentioned plans for a rust rewrite in his recent talk at Vite Conf.
FractalHQ··on CloudFront vs. Cloudflare, and how to reduce response times for both (2021)
It makes sense if you consider the fact that one complaint is printing money while the other is bleeding it.
FractalHQ··on DaVinci Resolve for iPad
Too bad iPad OS is a joke. A gutted version of a real software program running on an M1 should not be exciting news in 2021.
FractalHQ··on Build an early-stage startup
Octal has no footer so… thank you.
FractalHQ··on Trying new programming languages helped me grow as a software engineer
This is the way. Being able to make a website, PWA, cross-platform desktop app with Tauri, mobile app with RN / Quasar / Svelte Native / Cordova, or a standalone cross-platform executable with Deno is invaluable. Edge functions / cloudflare workers / Deno deploy, or even embedded js runtimes are all first class. As a typescript dev I feel like I can do almost anything, and UI is cake with Svelte and the other great web ui frameworks around JS. Not to mention the incredible ecosystem and the top-tier DX with PNPM and Vite. I feel spoiled when the possibilities are limitless and the tooling / ecosystem has it all!
FractalHQ··on MetaDock: Split Screen Browser
Vivaldi has this + dozens of unique features for free and has been around for ages.
FractalHQ··on Day.js – Fast 2kB alternative to Moment.js with the same modern API
I prefer date-fns https://date-fns.org

It’s functional and tree shakable!

I’ll have to check out Day.js next time though.

FractalHQ··on Facebook reportedly laying off thousands of employees
Adobe software is user hostile, bug infested spyware perched atop mountains of tech debt.
FractalHQ··on Tauri and Svelte for faster, lighter desktop apps
This is my favorite combo. Makes it easy to wow a client with the speed at which I can deliver a fast and high quality cross-platform desktop app.
FractalHQ··on Show HN: Airplane Views – code-first platform for building internal UIs
> “React without the boilerplate”

That’s called Svelte. My team would jump on this if it wasn’t tied to React!

FractalHQ··on Open Source Bait and Switch
Not to mention the countless societal benefits.
FractalHQ··on Experimenting a new syntax to write SVG
I use Pug for markup in my Svelte + TS projects and I adore it: https://github.com/pugjs/pug
FractalHQ··on macOS for Web
The Svelte version is actually the current version of the same project!
FractalHQ··on Hotel safety tips from a former intelligence officer
No offense but this sounds neurotic to me. I’ve been traveling internationally for over a decade professionally and never do any of these things. I’ve woken up to a fire alarm in a random hotel in a random country (more than once) and even then, I immediately recognize I’m in a hotel room and traveling for work. Then I just followed signs / people until the alarms stopped.
FractalHQ··on GTA VI Leak [video]
Bootcamp windows installations on MacBooks run windows (and games) better than any PC I’ve owned.
FractalHQ··on Blocking web fonts for speed and privacy (2016)
One of the functions of computers is to provide entertainment or evoke positive emotions. Many people use computers to explore and consume art. The reality is that people value how things make them feel. Even outside of entertainment, design and form can improve function when done right.

Sure, bad designs that inhibit functionality are bad. But good design that enhances it are better than no design, so removing good designers from a pipeline is a bad thing.

In my opinion, products driven entirely by developers with no design sense are just as bad as those driven by designers with no development sense. The solution involves good teamwork between both parties.

FractalHQ··on Adele is an open source repository of design systems and pattern libraries
It’s absurd that a project focused on design systems and ui/ux can’t manage to make its own website work on a mobile device with a little responsive css… https://adele.uxpin.com
FractalHQ··on Adderall Shortages Push ADHD Patients to Make Adjustments
As someone with serious ADHD, it’s upsetting to me how confidently incorrect you are about almost every uneducated point you’re making.
FractalHQ··on Blocking web fonts for speed and privacy (2016)
Get a better designer..
FractalHQ··on Blocking web fonts for speed and privacy (2016)
As both a developer and designer, this comment seems absurd to me. Art and information both play vital roles in the human experience.
FractalHQ··on TinyBase v2.0: reactive data store for local-first apps
I’m my limited experience, a reliable CRDT implementation necessitates a CDRT-first design baked into the core of any data / transaction model. Like I’ve heard some game developers say- multiplayer needs to come first because tacking it onto a single player game is a nightmare.

I need to revisit the space soon. Hopefully I’m wrong because I think CRDTs will play an important role in the next generation of applications. A smooth on-ramp for existing apps would do wonders for adoption.

FractalHQ··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
I’m a freelancer so I have the luxury of choice here, but I agree there is likely not much that will change until Adobe cripples Figma enough for an alternative to surpass it significantly.
FractalHQ··on Customs officials have copied Americans’ phone data at scale
How does this phone data capture work? Do they need to physically plug in your phone to a machine of theirs? I travel a lot and have never been asked to hand over my phone to a customs officer.
FractalHQ··on Interactive Docs with Markdoc
In my experience, nothing beats mdsvex (https://mdsvex.com) when it comes to simplicity and power. It’s a staple in the Svelte community and authored by a core Svelte maintainer.

If I’m honest though, the one thing that can beat it for me is my guilty pleasure - pug in Svelte. If a better way to author web pages exists, I’ve never seen it!

FractalHQ··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Same here. This is going to do tangible damage to my daily life as someone who opens Figma daily. I also spend time hunting rogue Adobe spyware processes in activity monitor daily. Adobe destroys everything they touch and Figma was finally innovating despite them. I hope we get real anti trust laws someday.
FractalHQ··on Adobe Thinks It Can Solve Netflix’s Password ‘Piracy’ Problem
I wouldn’t be so quick to exclude creative tools from this. Even Adobes creative apps are some of the most atrocious spyware infested tech debt laden dumpster fires around, and are never the best option for creative work.
FractalHQ··on Apps have become too good at their jobs
Shorts algorithms are trash. All of the content is braindead mainstream hogwash, none of which I remotely enjoy or watch on YouTube. I imagine Tiktok would not have this problem based on what I’ve heard.
