FraaJad··on Show HN: Sublime Merge – A Git client from the makers of Sublime Text
It is essentially free unless you want the ability to customize the colours. This is even more generous than SublimeText. Not even nagging popups.
FraaJad··on Self-Driving Taxis Will Become the Most Disgusting Spaces on Earth
Yet it is the US folks that wear shoes inside their homes and wipe their butt with paper (only).

If we are comparing clean-clean countries, Japan is probably #1. Let's not bring US into that list.

FraaJad··on WordPress on .NET
The benchmarks http://www.peachpie.io/benchmarks show peachpie outperforming PHP7 easily by 100x.
FraaJad··on What happened to Python?
you will probably like Nim - https://nim-lang.org/ if you like Static Typing in a pythonish language, and writing long running (perhaps CPU intensive) tasks.
FraaJad··on A Majestic Leopard Accidentally Takes a Selfie in the Streets of Mumbai
painted Yellow flowers.
FraaJad··on Baidu File System – A distributed file system for real-time applications
Why would India use Mandarin?

English is the most common script in India, why would we use anything else. Unless you are Hindian trying to impose your minority language on the rest of us.

FraaJad··on Fixing Python Performance with Rust
You can write DLL/dylib in D to work with Python: http://pyd.readthedocs.io/en/latest/functions.html

You can opt-out of D's GC. Turn on `-vgc` flag during compilation and replace GC'd code with non-GC'd code and you are not using any GC.

FraaJad··on Foundations of Data Science [pdf]
this book was posted on John E. Hopcroft's webpage - https://www.cs.cornell.edu/jeh/ who also has won a Turing award.
FraaJad··on RethinkDB needs a new home
Did you have to create a throw away account just to shit on AGPL? (this is the second thread on the topic rethinkdb you are commenting exclusively on the AGPL license).
FraaJad··on Foundations of Data Science [pdf]
you can use a service like printme1.com
FraaJad··on Foundations of Data Science [pdf]
The table of contents is pretty much the core topics of serious data science (as opposed to "learn to use data science libraries in $lang in 21 days")

So yes, this book that is avaialble for download from a TURING Award winner's web page IS a Computer Science book for Data Science.

FraaJad··on Nim Programming Language v0.15.0 released
It's hard to please a Lisper about any other language's macro system. So, this is a wash.
FraaJad··on My experience rewriting Enjarify in Rust
I wish someone would do this in nim and compare the results.

My wishful thinking is that nim would come in at the same number of lines as Python and very close to Rust's performance.

FraaJad··on Ruminations on D: An Interview with Walter Bright
Eh.. I wrote a 1000 line linux "system" application in D. Didn't use a single class. All enums and structs pretty much like you would approach it like good "C" programmer while still using all of D's goodness.
FraaJad··on How I wrote and published my novel using only open source tools
LaTeX is purely for text/formula/equation-heavy academic publishing. It was created for that purpose by Lesley Lamport.

ConTeXt - http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Main_Page (an open source derivating of TeX) developed and supported commercially by Pragama - http://www.pragma-ade.com/ is what you should use for typesetting magazines etc.,

ConTeXt gives you complete artistic and layout control. While it is used heavily for non-technical publishing, people like Sanjoy Mahajan have used ConTeXt for publishing Math books like - "Street Fighting Mathematics" https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/street-fighting-mathematics

See resulting PDF: https://mitpress.mit.edu/sites/default/files/titles/free_dow...

FraaJad··on Happy 10th birthday pandoc
IIRC, pandoc has asciidoc writer. ie., it can parse other formats and output asciidoc/tor format.
FraaJad··on Happy 10th birthday pandoc
I know nothing about French typography.. having said that..

pandoc allows you to use different LaTeX templates than the ones it ships with. So, you can take the default templates, add the overrides necessary for French typography and voilà! (hopefully).

FraaJad··on Happy 10th birthday pandoc
I'm a big fan of Pandoc. However, if you have a lot of tables in your document, ASCIIDOCTOR is a better choice to produce PDFs.

ASCIIDOCTOR has clear and superior table formatting syntax and more importantly it can work with CSV files. This way you don't have to copy paste data into your reports.

FraaJad··on What I learned from the Chinese about our Indian online market
I can see this argument coming from someone who is privileged enough to move outside their ancestral domicile.

Most people, even those born in the richest country in the world, seldom move outside their state.

If I were to be treated like a second class citizen in my own place of birth because some languages give a small percentage of the population "world mobility", I would choose carefully.

FraaJad··on From Linear Models to Machine Learning (draft) [pdf]
Use of non-monospaced fonts for code fragments in LaTeX composed books must stop.
FraaJad··on What I learned from the Chinese about our Indian online market
Hindi is a local language. Those who can't write/read their own mother tongue are the product of the aforementioned linguistic apartheid where the city bred kids (I am one) attend a CBSE/ICSE curriculum that actively discourage non-Hindi/English languages.
FraaJad··on Marp: Markdown Presentation Writer
You can just use Pandoc to output reveal.js HTML for you.

    pandoc hello.md -t revealjs -o hello.html
FraaJad··on Amazon Prime Strikes Deal for Most PBS Children’s Shows
Or a cheaper option of a blue ray player (I have a six year old sony blue ray player which has the Amazon video app )which you can probably get now for under $50.
FraaJad··on Ask HN: As a Python developer, what am I missing for not using Ruby?
As a python programmer for over 15 years, you will be better served by learning a PL from a different paradigm

* Erlang/Elixir -- concurrency

* OCaml/Haskell -- static typing etc.,

* Typescript/Elm/Purescript -- better Javascript

* You get the idea ...

more so than Ruby. Ruby lives in the same neighbourhood in the galaxy of programming languages. You are not missing much by ignoring Ruby.

FraaJad··on PowerNex: a kernel written in the D Programming Language
I wouldn't be very sure about the claim that "D can never compete with Rust in performance and real-time or soft-real-time systems". If anything, due to much better metaprogramming (as you mention), you can have D programs that ARE faster than Rust (eg: see JSON parsing benchmark [1]).

You can write programs in D that have ZERO garbage collection.

In fact, the core libraries (phobos) are being actively rewritten to remove GC altogether.

FraaJad··on PowerNex: a kernel written in the D Programming Language
Andrei Alexandrescu, one of chief architects of D answered this a while ago on Quora [1]. IMO, this is a fair and nuanced answer.

FraaJad··on India launches 20 satellites in single mission
Your use of the colonial word "Ganges" to refer to the river Ganga betrays your coloured view of that part of the world.
FraaJad··on Why Rust for Low-Level Linux Programming?
I like nim for the same reason (and use for for small programs), though I'm using D at $work because D is more "mainstream" and established at this time.
FraaJad··on Images from India's First Space Shuttle Launch
The commenter's name should alert you to obvious biases.
FraaJad··on C as an Intermediate Language (2012)
A few languages that generate C that are currently popular are:

* nim

* Vala (GObject backend)

* Purescript (technically it has a C++ backend, but it is worth mentioning here for the very clean C++ it produces!)
