Fr0styMatt88··on Smartphone market forecast to decline this year due to memory shortage
Youtube/Google just make these shitty small annoying decisions just to make the iOS experience that little bit more annoying than it has to be.

Case in point — Youtube background play doesn’t pause when Siri makes an announcement, so if you’re listening to something you get two voices over each other.

I gave it the benefit of the doubt and figure it must be some kind of iOS thing, until I was listening to Audible one day and it paused automatically. So it’s just a google thing, not a third-party apps thing.

i have the same issue with the Youtube queue — this is something that could easily be persisted, but they just choose not to.

Fr0styMatt88··on RAM now represents 35 percent of bill of materials for HP PCs
I asked ChatGPT directly how it was fair that OpenAI bought 40% of the world’s RAM supply.

It denied this saying that the figures quoted were estimates only, that such massive RAM contracts would be easily obtainable public knowledge and that primarily the recent price increases were mostly cyclical in nature.

Any truth to this?

Edit to add: I am actually curious; I was under the impression that this 40% story going around was true and confirmed, rather than just hyperbole or speculation.

Fr0styMatt88··on I’m joining OpenAI
Seems exactly like that whole “Dropbox vs setting up an FTP server” thing again.
Fr0styMatt88··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
What I don’t get is why it can’t tell I’ve gone back and edited a suggestion or correction it gave me and correct itself in the future.
Fr0styMatt88··on Common Lisp Screenshots: today's CL applications in action
While not Common Lisp I've always found it pretty cool that AutoCAD shipped with a Lisp, making the language technically a hugely deployed commercial success.
Fr0styMatt88··on Two kinds of AI users are emerging
I find AI great for just greasing the wheels, like if I’m overthinking on a problem or just feel too tired to start on something I know needs doing.

The solutions also help me combat my natural tendency to over-engineer.

It’s also fun getting ChatGPT to quiz me on topics.

Fr0styMatt88··on Adventure Game Studio: OSS software for creating adventure games
AGS is awesome and well and truly battle tested in terms of having actual full commercial games made with it.

Such a wonderful engine.

Fr0styMatt88··on Text Is King
Pop-sci / self-help I feel is particularly egregious in this regard. Like you could take the entirety of many self-help books and summarise them into a few bullet points.

Though having said that, if the ultimate goal of writing is to transfer one person’s experience of human thought to another, then the filler often makes sense. They’re trying to take you on the same mental journey that they went on. At least that’s the good-faith interpretation.

I think filler is also akin to the difference in experience between listening to an audiobook at 1x speed vs say 3x speed. The slower pace gives your brain time to work.

But I totally agree, once you know a bunch about a subject the filler becomes unnecessary.

Fr0styMatt88··on House of Lords Votes to Ban UK Children from Using Internet VPNs
Put together, it’s likely most people’s friends wouldn’t produce enough content to drive engagement, at least in ‘public’ social media like Facebook.

I remember this phenomenon back when Facebook was less algorithmic — some days there’d just be no new content at all. Especially I’m guessing if you limit adding friends to actually just the people you’d be happy to grab lunch with.

Fr0styMatt88··on Text Is King
You know it’s really strange when I think about it. I no longer feel motivated to read books mostly, but I could easily spend an hour or two a day reading HN comments and Reddit threads.

Although part of that I’m sure is that as I’m visually impaired, reading physical books is far more tiring than reading off a screen where I can make the text the exact size I want.

Used to be a voracious reader as a kid (though 99% non-fiction).

Fr0styMatt88··on Video Games as Art
The Stanley Parable really explored that freedom-of-choice aspect. It was brilliant, but at the same time it did make me a bit sad.
Fr0styMatt88··on Dead Internet Theory
I find the sound is a dead giveaway for most AI videos — the voices all sound like a low bitrate MP3.

Which will eventually get worked around and can easily be masked by just having a backing track.

Fr0styMatt88··on Launch HN: Indy (YC S21) – A support app designed for ADHD brains
When you say assistive technology, what kind of things are you thinking about?

I don't have ADHD myself but I'm heavy into home automation and am just interested in it in general, since I think there's so much potential for smart tech to actually improve the lives of those with ADHD.

Some things that come to mind:

- Washing machine alerts you if you have accidentally done washing and forgotten to take it out.

- Household lights change colour consistently throughout the day to assist with time blindness; house goes into wind-down mode at night automatically at the same time. Music starts automatically when you should be getting up out of bed. Coffee machine starts brewing coffee (if that's your thing).

- Doomscrolling pits like Instagram and Tiktok are disabled except for very specific times of the day.

- Extremely low friction note taking (eg- smartwatch, recorder pin) that's instantly available, searchable and automatable.

- Airtags for finding misplaced items quickly.

Also goes without saying -- when you know one person with ADHD.... you know one person with ADHD. What works for any particular person is going to be mostly unique, or at least a unique combination of things.

Essentially, anything that a) puts cues in your environment to help steer you in the right direction and b) requires very little executive function to access.

Is that on the right track?

Fr0styMatt88··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Yep. I grew up in the era of ‘stranger danger’. We were explicitly taught as kids to fear strangers and socialising. We were taught “don’t be rude and butt in to conversations uninvited”, etc.

Still, something else is off. In the 90s, the Internet was a way to expand your social circle. So many friends made on IRC groups that moved into real life.

Nowadays yeah, commenting on Reddit and chatting to friends in message groups does feel like socialising, even though you might go two weeks without seeing anyone other than coworkers, cashiers (maybe) and Uber Eats delivery drivers.

Fr0styMatt88··on Linux is good now
Good idea about HIDRAW — I’ll have to look into that, thanks!

I did try overriding the src for OpenRGB but as I’m on unstable, something else in the dependency chain must have broken as the post-install patches weren’t applying IIRC.

Wasn’t urgent but I’ll likely get back to it at some point.

Fr0styMatt88··on Linux is good now
Funnily enough the most annoying things on my system at the moment is RGB and keyboard/mouse customisation.

I haven’t found a tool that can access all the extra settings of my Logitech mouse, not my Logitech speakers.

OpenRGB is amazing but I’m stuck on a version that constantly crashes; this should be fixed in the recent versions but nixpkgs doesn’t seem to have it (last I checked).

On the other hand I did manage to get SteamVR somewhat working with ALVR on the Quest 3, but performance wasn’t great or consistent at all from what I remember (RTX 3070, Wayland KDE).

Fr0styMatt88··on Linux is good now
Really good points about big games and your comparison to graphics card drivers is pretty convincing. Changed this old-timer’s mind a bit.
Fr0styMatt88··on Linux is good now
Anticheat is one of those things where I probably sound really old, but man it’s just a game. If you hate cheating, don’t play on pub servers with randoms or find a group of people you can play with, like how real life works.

For competitive gaming, I think attested hardware & software actually is the right way to go. Don’t force kernel-level malware on everyone.

Fr0styMatt88··on Claude wrote a functional NES emulator using my engine's API
I see these “you had a different experience than me” comments around AI coding agents a lot and can concur; I’ll have a different experience with Copilot from day-to-day even, sometimes it’s great and other days I give up on using it at all it’s being so bad.

Makes me honestly wonder — will AGI just give us agents that get into bad moods and not want to work for the day because they’re tired or just don’t feel like it!

Fr0styMatt88··on Stranger Things creator says turn off “garbage” settings
I seem to remember that it was The X-Files that first pioneered the “every episode is a mini-movie” and it showed in the production at the time compared to other stuff.

Could be mis-remembering though, when I think about early anthologies like Twilight Zone or Freddy’s Nightmares.

Fr0styMatt88··on Aldous Huxley predicts Adderall and champions alternative therapies
Watching a good friend of mine struggle with this after diagnosis for a few years now and I feel this really captures the nuance and complexity of this struggle well. Stimulants are an incredible tool but also an incredibly imperfect one.
Fr0styMatt88··on Solarpunk is happening in Africa
Wondering if any Aussies here know this.

I’ve heard that if you have a solar system and a battery system connected to the grid, if the grid goes out for whatever reason, your battery gets cut off as well. Meaning that it’s essentially useless as power backup.

Is this true? Can you really go fully off-grid in Australia?

I’ve heard this from rural people in Victoria, where they do experience blackouts and where an actual backup would be useful.

Fr0styMatt88··on The brain navigates new spaces by 'darting' between reality and mental maps
I’m not sure about that, I mean this is something that client-side prediction in games is doing all the time, so why wouldn’t a self-driving car do it?
Fr0styMatt88··on They don't make 'em like that any more: Dyson Pure Cool-Me personal air purifier
I sleep in what would be considered a relatively large master bedroom with ensuite. Recently got an AirGradient One sensor and was shocked at the overnight co2 levels.

When sleeping with window and door closed and just by myself, co2 levels exceeded 2,000ppm by morning and only fell once I was awake and opening doors.

With the window slightly open and the door slightly open, levels were at a much better 700ppm or so.

If this thing works as advertised, that would be great. There are a lot of situations where it’s difficult to sleep with the window or the door open.

Fr0styMatt88··on On Charlie Kirk and Saving Civil Society
It’s that and the recommendation algorithm. Why is it even needed? How come I can’t just have a network of my friends that I picked and that’s it?

Rhetorical questions, I know why (engagement, profit) — that’s the big issue.

Fr0styMatt88··on I am giving up on Intel and have bought an AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
Alright so two CPUs failing in the same system has gotta be strange; mobo issue?

Secondly, what BIOS settings should I be using to run safely? Is XMP/whatever the AMD equivalent is safe? If I don't run XMP then my RAM runs at way below spec (for the stick) default speeds.

Anyone know of a good guide for this stuff?

Fr0styMatt88··on AWS CEO says using AI to replace junior staff is 'Dumbest thing I've ever heard'
I primarily work in C# during the day but have been messing around with simple Android TV dev on occasion at night.

I’ve been blown away sometimes at what Copilot puts out in the context of C#, but using ChatGPT (paid) to get me started on an Android app - totally different experience.

Stuff like giving me code that’s using a mix of different APIs and sometimes just totally non-existent methods.

With Copilot I find sometimes it’s brilliant but it’s so random as to when that will be it seems.

Fr0styMatt88··on GPT-5
Or it stops talking mid-sentence because you cleared your throat or someone else in the room is watching TV and other people are speaking.
Fr0styMatt88··on GPT-5
Yeah, whenever I think of an AGI as a coding assistant I wonder “will it just have days where it’s not in the mood to code just like I do?”.
