If you slow down a song enough you will make it easy enough for anyone ha the tempo is part of the challenge!

If a democrat president had done it I would have the exact same critique, I don’t really care who does it. Though if we’re going to speculate, I would speculate that a Democrat administration would know better and would strike that from the list of possible names. The main difference though is that they would get the benefit of the doubt if they don’t spend so much time doing vanity-related renames. The context matters here. This administration should not ever be extended any assumption of good faith. They are incredibly calculated with these kinds of decisions. Culture war tactics were a huge part of what got them the presidency in the first place

> definitely had exactly the same thing happening, just compared to our scale today where everything is "more" and "bigger",

And faster. More, bigger, faster. Which substantively changes the situation the same way a musket stops venn diagraming as a “firearm” at some point when compared to a 50-round automatic rifle.

Let’s avoid cheap bait/leading questions maybe?
Forgeties79··on America.gov
The issue is that “the US is not America” is a very well known refrain and this was clearly a deliberate action. Confusion or not, they don’t care. It’s culture war 101 behavior.

If the name wasn’t a big deal they wouldn’t have named it “America.” It’s also hard to give any benefit of the doubt when this admin is so aggressive about changing the names of everything possible to include “Trump” and “America.” It’s clearly a deliberate tactic.

All AI semantic tendencies were “learned” from us. That doesn’t change anything.

If we’re comparing war between entire nations to speculative economic investment than I’m not sure I need to make any more points.
Forgeties79··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
We have never seen governments essentially leverage their economies so heavily, so quickly, for a speculative technology. It is literally propping up a significant portion of the US economy right now.

When have we seen anything like this?

Forgeties79··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart

Forgeties79··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
Why is it whenever people try to downplay the efficacy of LLM’s evangelists go “there’s literally never been anything like this,” but the moment people critique them or try to weigh their impact on society the response is “well it’s nothing we haven’t seen before”?

The amount of money flowing and the sheer scale of all of this stuff is without precedent. We are seeing governments from the local to federal level literally shift their economies because of all the speculation. We are clearly experiencing a moment of sorts, and anybody who is worried about what the fallout will be is just handwaved away as ignorant fear mongers. Unless you are the head of these companies doing it in a disingenuous way to pump up your valuation, then suddenly it’s legitimate - but not so legitimate that we should do anything besides let the US government build a moat for them!

> But western society offloaded all that work to women so long ago that it largely forgot to even recognize it! When women were allowed to seek careers, quite frankly men did not pick up the slack at all. They basically just assumed all this stuff happened magically it seems.

Very true in a lot of domains! When I first became a parent I had to learn a lot about “mental load” or risk my marriage. A lot of women won’t put up with that anymore (rightfully so)

> In fact, there was plenty of discomfort across the board, not just with Clippy. “We did a bunch of focus-group testing, and the results came back kind of negative,” she later recalled. “Most of the women thought the characters were too male and that they were leering at them.” The majority-male leadership team decided to move forward anyway.

lol of course they did

“If” doing a lot there. I don’t think we’ve seen any indicators this is altruistic. Hence my complaint that they keep unleashing their models in unethical/illegal/generally harmful ways. They need to act more responsibly if I’m going to remotely entertain that argument as even a possibility. Instead it just reads like they want the state to build a moat for them.

That’s great. Wish I had a good beach nearby. Closes is about an hour but the water really isn’t fit for swimming anymore since about 10-15 years ago. We have to go three hours to get anywhere reasonable
Forgeties79··on You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner
What a bummer. We have friends, family, and our friends’ families over all the time. 1-2 days a week. Now part of that is obviously we are fortunate to have the space and (barely) the time for it. Still, I want to encourage those who can to make the effort to use their home as a social hub. It’s incredibly gratifying. We get a lot of joy out of sharing our home with others. Eventually it’s really not that much work - I honestly find it’s easier/more relaxing than going elsewhere sometimes.

Plus when you have kids it’s a lot more convenient than trying to wrangle them at the end of a fun time lol

Forgeties79··on When did Google get so weird?
It really is a great piece. I think a lot of his stuff has suffered in quality as he’s trying to strike while the iron is hot, but this piece in particular really is excellent.
Forgeties79··on Pirating the Pirates
> The Library of Congress is selective about what it preserves too, as is every museum. No single entity could possibly hope to preserve every film, it takes a community.

You can’t possibly compare this to yet another person downloading all of Friends to watch off their hard drive, and most of these people aren’t seeding back anyway, so they’re not even part of the swarm.

I don’t object to piracy but I do object to preservation arguments made for/by people who are in no way thinking along those lines. I can’t buy tailgating on some clearly inapplicable altruism argument.

Forgeties79··on When did Google get so weird?
I get that logic even if I don’t buy it. But it doesn’t mean they need to keep unleashing it and breaking things. They’re literally doing the things they’re warning us will happen. They’re deliberately attacking infrastructure/websites.
Forgeties79··on When did Google get so weird?
Ed’s piece on this is considered pretty authoritative. There was a very specific moment where they determined, concretely, ad placement > utility of search results. Combined with years of damage from encouraging SEO tactics…well, here we are. Sure maybe this was always going to be the outcome, but we do know the major decisions that directly lead to this result as it played out.

If you haven’t read it from start to finish you should. If you have, what about it is insufficient?

Forgeties79··on When did Google get so weird?
Then they should shut their doors and delete it all. This is like building a new gun as you tell everyone about how dangerous guns are and how they will destroy all of us. It cannot be so imminently dangerous/uncontrollable while also being the product your business happily makes and unleashes online to take down websites/violate federal law. You can't pretend you care while also happily sicking it on the public.
Forgeties79··on Pirating the Pirates
This is true but people also use it as a magic shield to (needlessly IMO) justify their piracy, even though they are 1) only downloading things they happen to like and 2) don’t even follow a basic 3-2-1 backup protocol, let alone anything remotely resembling SOP for preservation.

I bet not even 1 in 1000 people pirating are doing it primarily as a preservation exercise.

But it's not just for their own purposes. They shared it with the public which means they will get feedback, good and bad. No one forced them to post to HN.
