Fordec··on Large Eruption Near Tonga, Heard in NZ. Tsunami at Tonga and Fiji
They won't slow it, but pause effects for a short while. The CO2 would still be there afterwards and all the while increasing, the oceans will still be acidifying, etc.

The next years after would still be as bad as predicted

Fordec··on NASA says Webb’s excess fuel likely to extend its lifetime expectations
Swarm breached the "Mitigation of Orbital Debris Second Report and Order" which has been in place since 2004[0], for their launch on an Indian rocket because their 0.5Us would breach this and their aerodynamics wouldn't comply because the satellites were so small and didn't have enough atmospheric drag to bring them down in time. The tracked by radar aspect was resolvable by Leo Labs radars, but not the atmospheric drag component.

FCC subsequently fined them $900k.

Fordec··on NASA says Webb’s excess fuel likely to extend its lifetime expectations
A few, but he one that is the closest rubber that hits the road is part of the FCC filing for radio spectrum access on satellite projects. Without which, you're not getting on most rockets.
Fordec··on NASA says Webb’s excess fuel likely to extend its lifetime expectations
Also don't forget it at no point can it turn around and face the earth or sun or the light coming from the suns direction will burn out the optics. If it does it once, and it's mission over. All the while essentially driving most of the way up out of the gravity well and letting it get pulled back to earth a little and repeating. If it goes too far over the peak of the hill it will go over the other side with no way to reverse even if the rocket has the fuel.
Fordec··on NASA says Webb’s excess fuel likely to extend its lifetime expectations
And those satellites, by bulk, are in low earth orbit with a lifetime of usually 4 years, and a legally mandated reentry in 25 years.

JWTs location in L2 (a mathematically unstable location that requires energy to not roll back into a gravity well in any direction) is like putting it on the satellite equivalent of K2 and not coming down from the peak for 20 years and you compare it to the thousands of commuters that made it up the hill down the road from your house.

Fordec··on Google Had Secret Project to ‘Convince’ Employees ‘That Unions Suck’
Half the population are conservatives at least, which is what I mean regards to reverting to the mean in a geographic area. Plenty of people are not libertarians but just base level, Fox news repeating (eg. Hillarycare), auth-right quadrant conservative and are ashamed of the moniker.
Fordec··on Google Had Secret Project to ‘Convince’ Employees ‘That Unions Suck’
From my experience, I find this is true only in the very core of core tech hubs that you can count on one hand. And also with a bias towards finance, adtech, crypto, fintech and other industries that rely on extracting wealth than creating it.

Core R&D, hardware, B2B services, networking companies, etc. and then also the factor of geographic places that aren't considered "sexy" in the HN crowd revert to the mean for that geographic area in regards to the mix of political leanings.

I disagree it's about hard work, but about ego about how society deserves to value them. That correlates only really under the age of 35 before their first health scare when suddenly society owes something to them that they never previously wanted to feed a cent into.

Fordec··on The software that flies SpaceX rockets and starships
Can't churn through engineers at the rate SpaceX do with Ada vs C++. They'd run out of replacement staff very quickly.
Fordec··on The Great SPAC Scam: SPACs a Great Deal for Sponsors, but Not Others
There were a few companies that I was waiting for to go public that ended up going the SPAC route around the time I didn't have extra capital to deploy at the time they went public. Now, I'm just glad I didn't. While I still intend to invest once the knife that is their valuations stops falling and starts to rebound on fundamentals, for now they still have a bit more to lose in their valuation to be in line with the rest of the market on your standard metrics eg. P/E.

I'm just not gutsy enough to short the stocks until then.

One thing I am now on the look out for is for short-term short squeezes before initial lockup periods expire.

Fordec··on Stop Whining about Rust Hype – A Pro-Rust Rant
Personally, it's less "Rust is great" more "We are seeking to address performance bottlenecks in security sensitive, uncontrolled inputs, please don't make me go back to C".
Fordec··on Ask HN: So who else is getting a pay cut this year?
Leave & get yourself a 20%+ raise. You're not "given" a pay cut, you accept one by your own choice and actions.
Fordec··on Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
I have about as much faith in this as a Twitter API.
Fordec··on Summary of the AWS Service Event in the Northern Virginia (US-East-1) Region
Lets see...

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.

aaaand...

Nope. Plans for it, but not yet in production.

Oh and before anyone starts, not in transitive dependencies either. Just good old bare metal EC2 instances without vendor lock in.

Fordec··on Summary of the AWS Service Event in the Northern Virginia (US-East-1) Region
Simply already patched. Company sizes and number of attack surfaces vary. 22 hours is plenty of time for an input string filter on a centrally controlled endpoint and a dependency increment with the right CI pipeline.
Fordec··on Summary of the AWS Service Event in the Northern Virginia (US-East-1) Region
Between this and Log4j, I'm just glad it's Friday.
Fordec··on Is Web3 anything?
And most (competent) tech leadership were previously technical and are leveraging their expertise also.
Fordec··on Is Web3 anything?
Lawyers do not write laws. Politician, or at least the writing staff do.

To stick to the analogy I guess:

Lawyers -> Engineers

Policy Writers -> Architects

Politicians -> Executives, Directors, Sales and Marketing

Judges -> QA

Fordec··on Is Web3 anything?
I've come to the acceptance that lawyers are to the legal system as software engineers are to technical systems. You pay people who specialize in knowing the ins and outs of a complex system so you can get on with your life as a citizen, founder, etc.

And people who espouse that we don't need laws or lawyers to run our society are making about as coherent sense as saying we can ship a unicorn entirely on no-code and without engineers. It's in the realm of possibilities, maybe, but it will be a house of cards ready to implode unless this mantra is, at best, sheepishly abandoned half way through the endeavor.

Fordec··on All sound recordings prior to 1923 will enter the US public domain in 2022
50%+1 of a standard living persons actionable career. Do assuming 18 to 70. That makes 52/2 = 26 and +1 = 27. For sake of even numbers, you can fight over 25 or 30. I don't mind either way, both are far better than the current status.
Fordec··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
Same. I fully blacklist working for companies that do this.
Fordec··on My worst tech interview experience
As an interviewer I've given you a heads up before the meeting what is being tested for. Some time to practice, do pre-work, research the company, etc.

Dumping at the start of that meeting out of the blue this criteria, is not a two-way street equal reciprocation of that respect. If you'd kill for ten candidates, you can have him. I've had ~230 for 2 position this week and I'm testing for EQ also. Maybe changing requirements on people at the last minute fits in your work culture.

Fordec··on Instagram Is Facebook Now
FB has had a big problem for years. Zuckerberg, notwithstanding everything else, to his credit has demonstrated he is intimately aware of it through his acquisition strategies. If it's in a blink of an eye, it's your eye. To others it's been the case ever since the Instagram/Whatsapp acquisitions.
Fordec··on New research links potentially toxic fat-protein complexes to Alzheimer's
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1140705/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29701155/

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-65908-y

But can't say I've been following Youtube videos or Reddit on the matter.

Edit: I didn't know who the youtube video you linked is, but a cursory google bring up that he is accused of quackery. Also, the source on that video is... his own website hosting his own work. Not exactly peer review is it?

Fordec··on New research links potentially toxic fat-protein complexes to Alzheimer's
What seems to be hinted at through this and other research out in the past 12 month:

Reduce fat intake.

It's not the cause, but the carrier of toxins across the blood-brain carrier. Reducing fat would reduce the rate of toxin build up. It's not a cure, nor does it tackle the genetic component, but way to prolong lifestyle.

Fordec··on The chase for fusion energy
Except they aren't "writing code faster" but started 8 years later and the industry now has these things like source control, GPUs and cloud computing and a new project is moving far faster with the new tools than the competing, existing project stuck in development hell that is still running in a server down the hall entirely composed Itanium 2 processors of and written in PHP 4.

One project started in 2007 planning activation in 2025 and planning reactions in 2035. The other started in 2015, activated 2017 and steady state reactions have been delayed from the original Sept 2021 plan to 2022. It's not even close the results so far.

Fordec··on The chase for fusion energy
Probably because Wendelstein 7-X is making progress at a far faster rate than the ITER model has the current goal, without accounting for delays, for a 2050+ delivery time for the PROTO reactor.
Fordec··on Can mRNA Vaccines Defeat Herpes?
In that case, get off HN and get back to work! You're needed in the ICU. We can only do one thing at a time and you're here?? /s
Fordec··on Tech journalism is less diverse than tech (2020)
I would contend that, while a subset, GAMMA companies != all tech companies as the headline implies
Fordec··on Security issue related to the NPM registry
By getting off NPM entirely and new projects internally banned from using it from day ome. Luckily all the backend stuff isn't in javascript which is 80% of the battle.
Fordec··on AMP Has Irreparably Damaged Publishers’ Trust in Google-Led Initiatives
Could install a Pi hole to block them off your home network entirely.

But yeah, I'm also phasing out my google usage. Personally getting off gmail and professionally migrating off firebase and already refuse to work with GCP in any capacity.
