Fordec··on The new rules of context engineering for Claude 5 generation models
It does feel a bit smarter, but it seems to be also "too clever by half" and its not ignoring the rules, it's rejecting them and finding work arounds. It sticks to the word of the law, while rebelling against the spirit of the law.

One example is to get around a git --checkout usage ban, it CD'd to another folder first and back to bypass the regex in the hook.

Fordec··on The new rules of context engineering for Claude 5 generation models
This all strikes me as an effort to move tailoring the harness out of the easily transferable .md file into specific Anthropic tooling to increase lock in.

I've been running Opus 5 today and it's already done accidental deletions, made far more mistakes and worked around deliberate hook controls than previous Opus versions combined. Also it looks like token usage is up as it fails at the task the first time around much more frequently than 4.8.

I could see this being useful for retractable banners also
Fordec··on Why Software Factories Fail (or: harness engineering is not enough)
I have a hunch it comes down to the training data. We have spent decades as an industry talking up the new shiny thing, deliverables, frameworks, features, performance improvements, the one thing you don't read copious amounts of prose about is "how I maintained our system so that nobody noticed".
Fordec··on What I learned selling 2,500 MIDI recorders: Hardware is not so hard
And the RF is a pre-certified module. Of course hardware is easy when you've offloaded the hard part to the supplier. Not to mention, a three year turn around? For this? Three months, six max with mistakes and reworks would be industry expectations "pre-LLMs". Everything is easy when you have 6x to 12x the timescale your competitors expect.
Fordec··on What's the deal with all the random weekly quota resets for agents lately?
The last few have corresponded to basically within the hour or two of the release of a competing model that is getting good reviews. Twice I've gone "well, I'm over my weekly limit for the next two days, may as well check this out" and almost just as I've finished that thought, a refresh landed and I went to blitz a week of usage in 48 hours instead because once it's gone, it's gone.

Hurray market competition and what capitalism was meant to be. Go above in providing a service or the customer leaves.

Fordec··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
Managers, good technical ones anyway, also dive deeper into technical understanding. They don't do it to write more code, they do it to figure out what the developer is saying to ensure the developers aren't blowing smoke.
Fordec··on What will be left for us to work on?
Welcome to the current day difference between being an Accredited Engineer and being a Developer. The only thing that's happening is that the Developer side are getting a wake up call.
Fordec··on Don't you mean extinct?
Or put the dependency in the unit tests so it's not part of the code base but able to be compared to the canonical implementation.
Fordec··on Don't you mean extinct?
And I am gradually coming to the conclusion that "needle" isn't even features. In a world where everyone has AI access, moving the needle in an existing product space can readily be done by whoever. The real game changers will be those who redefine their market segment entirely rendering existing offering completely out of customer demand. And the only way to migrate the business to the new model from the ground up in say four to six months will only economically be able to be done by AI.

My hobby AI projects feature wise match existing company offerings in about a week of turn around. But this alone is valueless. The new thing that didn't exist before 2026 will remain the hard moat. But these moats will dissolve as fast as OpenAI can scrape your public marketing. It's going to be like releasing Meccha Chameleon as a break out hit but a month later the clones on Roblox having greater player numbers. This is the turn around times we're going to have to live with in general for business pivots to the "next" business logic that makes sense in the market.

Closer to the AI world it's going to be as fast as the transition from prompt engineering and MCPs to loop engineering and harnesses. I'm pretty confident popular commentators will see "loops" as old hat by December by raw function of what speed of evolution we're dealing with here now.

Fordec··on AI changes the economics of software rewrites
A rewrite is like moving house. In the new house, it doesn't have things the way you had everything set up "just right" is the old house. But you now have an extra bedroom and bathroom and no longer have a black mold problem, and most importantly, the opportunity to do things in a new way with hindsight learned from the old house.

The move period has a lot of work ahead to get it back to livable, but also the opportunity to do better than just "livable".

The introduction of AI for rewrites is the equivalent of zero interest loans to housing, reducing the cost of a move. It doesn't mean "keep moving home", it means there is one less factor to worry about if you need to.

Fordec··on Ask HN: Is GitHub preparing to go behind a login wall?
Fine for my closed source stuff, but my open source work is specifically meant to be viewable, even by non-technical people doing recruitment or looking over my portfolio.

I've put up with a lot of stuff, but this would be my personal last straw.

Fordec··on Wicklow hotel cancels 'secretive' Peter Thiel group conference
It wasn't public until a an investigative journalist wrote an article about it after the membership of the group was exposed first. Per TFA:

Tailscale, decent developer focus
Fordec··on Oxide computer 3D rack guided tour
There are two companies that I want want to work for. Oxide is one of them. Many places I'm still willing to work for, but in a more neutral way. They're just mostly not hiring for my role/location as far as I can tell, so it is what it is.
Fordec··on Tesco moving 40k server workloads off VMware amid Broadcom's abusive conduct
I've been hearing that HPE are on a push lately with larger enterprises trying to encroach on VMWare during their pricing changes, might be them.
Fordec··on Is Meta destroying its engineering organization?
I used to be able to view maps in 3D. Not anything fancy, just a tilt shift. This year I noticed the feature appears to be gone. Also, if I want to see my home city with an up to date overhead view from this side of 2023 to see what has been built lately, I have to go look up Sentinel imagery.

I would claim it has indeed become worse.

Fordec··on Open source AI must win
Anyone who isn't currently own a piece of who is winning by the current model. Basic disruption theory, if the game isn't going your way, change the game.

Fordec··on Trade Dollars with other startups. Book it as revenue
Doesn't feel very far off from the money circularly trading hands between Nvidia, Oracle, OpenAI etc.
Fordec··on Starship V3
And if I didn't tolerate it from the government then I shouldn't tolerate it here either, for the sake of consistency.
Fordec··on Starship V3
The thing which is seemingly missing from this is their current largest hurdle emerging from the V2 testing. The heat shields keep failing.

I guess the focus is going to be on getting stuff up, rather than back down. Thus the Starlink and data center plays, not human space exploration.
