Fnoord··on Make Tmux the OS
You could put it as PID 1 (with a small amount of modifications), you could put it as login shell (with a small amount of modifications), you could put it in your shell login script, or you could just do tmux a whenever you log in and tmux is already running. You can also save tmux sessions via a plugin. You can also configure each tmux window to open a specific program.

With tmux as an OS, you end up with a TUI web browser (there are several). While you can watch pictures and videos in a terminal, and vim keybinds are strong in a TUI web browser (reducing a learning curve), I wouldn't want the option to run a GUI web browser to be unavailable. So it makes more sense to have a tiling WM/DE, where with one keybind you to your terminal being fullscreen to your terminal multiplexer. But sometimes you want it floating! Then you put it (back) to floating. I also think that you can set up sway pretty much like tmux, except for the resuming/session part. Although my sway config (back when I ran sway) had an auto start of different windows with different applications.

Rooms 1986 project reminds me of Project Looking Glass [1] (or rather: the other way around). Rooms probably also inspired SGI IRIX' fsv (as seen in the movie Hackers from 1995), and Doom as a file manager. Still, I think the 3D exploration of your computer is neat. I don't know if VR glasses allow for this (they probably do), and I also don't know whether the sacrifice (it costs money, and you lose vision of your surroundings) is worth it. As such, I'm usually reminded AR is the better option, except if you want to be fully immersed. Which you very well might want to be while working.

Now, is all of this necessary? Opinion. I believe the macOS HIG is already so good (with other HIGs getting closer) that the answer is no. And for a quick terminal, you can just have a quake-like keybind (Ctrl + ~). On macOS, too, there's multiple ways to add tiling.

(There's also zellij, tmux clone written in Rust with sane defaults.)

Fnoord··on Mike Tomlin spent 12 years building a Minecraft city
(I had no idea who this guy was, as I am not from USA.)

As autistic person, I am not surprised. People hyperfocus on interests which scratch their itch (people with autism tend to be better at hyperfocus). A hyperfocus on gaming (specifically physical sports) fits in an autism profile, as does a hyperfocus on building a large (virtual) world. Keeping the build to yourself is akin to writing a book, not publishing it. In this case, the book is published.

If you will, he is manager/coach and player at the same time in Minecraft. Or, from a different PoV: IRL he is the coach, IVL he is the player (gamer).

Notice how his son did setup the A/V aspect of the recording, and how he is terrible with controller. PC gamer! I'm 40+ and would be terrible with either as well, CBA with it either.

Btw, I watched the video with my kids. They're aspiring Minecraft players, and enjoyed watching it -in awe- with me.

Fnoord··on An Update on Orion for Linux and Windows
I want the same browser (port) on each of my OSes. No Linux/AOSP port means I won't use your browser. But I guess I wasn't interesting enough of a customer (am subscribed to Kagi Search). No problem. For example: on my Steam Deck, I am happy with Mozilla Firedox and uBlock Origin. This company pivots too much to USA to my taste anyway.

Fnoord··on Stallman: Thousands Dead, Millions Deprived of Liberties (2001)
Lost, and gained.

Tor, Tails, Bitcoin, TLS each give freedom. These tools still exist, and still work, and there's a plethora of other tools, too. Something else: security.txt and ethical hacking took off, too.

Patriot Act, Snowden revelations each made us lose freedoms.

Yes, I'm aware of Trump's efforts in this regard, but GOP was rotten ever since Bush. Even before that, right-wing populism existed, too. But WWII was still too fresh for fascism to rise in the West.

Also, law isn't very useful if it isn't applied. For example, copyright law regarding LLMs.

> You don't want a browser that takes 10GB of extra RAM (on top of the memory hog that is having just 3 or 4 complex tabs open on its own already) and pegs your CPU at 99% usage for minutes at a time.

But I do, especially when the choice is either having it locally, remotely, or not at all. I also indeed do nit my CPU used for such, but GPU. I could even run a 8 GB model on a remote (but still local network, on-prem) NPU.

There's one caveat though: if you are gaming and browsing.

Fnoord··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Well, the Brexit campaign was manipulated by a state actor (or rather: 'a criminal actor disguised as a state'). None of the alt-right nationalism is in the long-term benefits of the country. This is globalism, the end game. You either team up, thereby reducing your costs, or you get swallowed. Ask Ukraine, Tibet, Hong Kong how it worked out for them not belonging to a bigger team. So divide and conquer is a logical move for the opponent, and it happens to align with alt-right. There is also documented evidence of external influence in these. A medium such as Follow The Money has documented such in various of their articles.

It isn't my Brother. The subject is a relatively new laserprinter: Brother DCP-L2622DW. My own Brother is an older inktjet, and I am pretty sure I could get that to work with CUPS/SANE, but yes. I'd use such device for such purpose as well.

The laserprinter was a terrible purchase, since new toners aren't much cloned yet, and superexpensive.

Fnoord··on StarCraft returns in 2030 as an open-world shooter
Yup, it is. MOBA replaced most of it (which DOTA innovated). I don't like MOBA at all, but neither do I like PvP RTS.

I believe Destiny proved an open world shooter in this genre can work.

Also, didnt they announce a Warcraft HOTS?

Fnoord··on JetKVM Mini
Does anyone know such a device, but for a CUPS/SANE server? It would allow tou to secure a printer/scanner (which often use out-of-date software stacks). I'm currently using a RPi for this, but require partly to use qemu to run this to emulate a x86-64 binary (Brother driver). How did we end up with this mess. TVs and STBs are same story.
Fnoord··on JetKVM Mini
Nice RAT, don't like always-on screen though. Anything works really. For example, a Hak5 screen crab plus a RPi plus a USB LTE modem could also be suffice. I don't know which stack this gl.inet device runs, but the Mifi I own from them (also usable in this regard) has a custom OpenWrt. Which can be removed to have a vanilla OpenWrt instead. Software stack FOSS is nice. Problem with all of this stuff, is closed source firmware in radios. Who knows which vulnerabilities reside in them, but given we are talking about wireless the sky is the limit with regards to who can assess.

Personally, I also specifically do not use the vPro NIC on my Intel machine.

Fnoord··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
(Premise: it isn't 'alcohol and drugs'; it is 'drugs'. Alcohol is a drug, and while we are at it: a powerful one.)

The reason for that is that you've been serving a hard drug to a customer. Don't do that if you cannot bear the responsibility (liability). In order to bear the liability, the price has to go up, including perhaps a safe escort home of the drug user, but of course that would be too expensive/socialist/authoritarian (blimey they want us to take responsible action regarding our customers! I knew a club here for young people where it was very normal to have them taxi'd home. Son, wanna go out? The taxi is part of the price), and lead to 'off the record' drug usage. Which is how we ended up in opioid crisis.

If alcohol would only be invented today, there's no chance it would be legal in the current umbrella of drugs. And, for good reason: it is too addictive, too harmful for self and their environment. Compare with the various empathogens or harmfulness of psychedelic drugs. These cause, normalized, far less damage to both user and their environment.

I abstain from drinking (I am sensitive to addiction which is how I ended up to that conclusion), and this weekend I had a tiramisu (it was on sale, wife bought it). Did I notice that? Oh hell, yes. Would you serve a child tiramisu? No, we should not.

Fnoord··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
In underregulated capitalism, the reason is very simple: because they get away with it. This is why they despise regulation; it enforces accountability. Want to advertise? Ensure the ads are legit. It doesn't work when you say 'we didn't know beforehand' when a significant percentage is scams. That is when you start to curate the content beforehand.

In any other normal market, the middleman would be held accountable. Big tech? Not so much. We seen the slap on the wrist regarding Microsoft at the start of the century/millennium. We can also witness the same with regards to the garbage coming from China, where China doesn't take responsibility. Learned from the best.

Fnoord··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Only my kids use the TV to watch YouTube, and in order to protect them from ads (it is illegal to advertise to children in my country), I block the ads using SmartTube which includes SponsorBlock. Since such is also advertising. Google is a rotten to the core company who's purpose is whitewashing scams and spying on private eyes. Whenever Google talks about 'security' I need to keep in mind their snake tongue definition of 'security' does not align with mine. Such as: combining security updates with (unwanted) new features, play 'integrity' (hurting non-Android devices), DRM not owning my devices (hello?! The pirated content is already available!), something such as manifest V3 which has a different purpose than the one they mention, and hard-coded DNS servers with device (Google Chromecast) refusing to work without.
Fnoord··on Terpstra Keyboard
HTTP;DR

If you got a product to demonstrate, have the dignity to use HTTPS. With a remotely exploitable vulnerability in Google Chrome V8 in the wild, all the more reason to. Even though I am using Mozilla Firefox, there's probably some Chromium-based software I use.

Fnoord··on Terpstra Keyboard
Hall effect by Wooting costs like a few hunderd EUR and have been around for quite some years, and this one with OLED is from 2007, costing 1600 USD (not worth it IMO) [1]. You don't typically look at your keyboard, same with toich bar. I guess there's a niche ie. Stream Deck (also overpriced). Doubt keys last long, given OLED burn-in.

Flagged. Press 'flag' if you don't want to know your country is becoming fascist. It isn't happening when you don't read about it. Right? Right??

The alleged reason for being fired, FTA:

> Slavin says he believes he was fired for having stated in an interview that "in a hypothetical situation, censorship would be a red line".

A perfectly OK comment, which could be made by anyone in any reasonable Western organization, government, for-profit, or non-profit. Except the West is no more. Or, apparently, without the USA. Possibly, just for now. Who knows?

Yeah, I get that. Any IP going through China might be hot tho; if you end up using it in a product, and your competitor's lawyers have a look at it, you might end up with your company/product getting destroyed. I guess we should treat AI the same as China in that regard (if living in 'the West')

In the meantime, AI companies ignore licenses and scrape as they see fit. Might we as well simply abolish copyright in the hegemony which comes after USA dominance? I don't know, but I do know China won't enforce it on their end.

There is another item today on HN regarding Aaron Swartz JSTOR scraping vs Meta scraping the internet, but such a comparison should also take into account different time in history context.

Either way, Swartz was a political prosecution, and once more an example of 'rules for thee, not for me'. Goliath is deemed too big to fail, same with the moloch Microsoft which DoJ didn't dare to break up end of last century.
