Flere-Imsaho··on From the creator of Redis; run LLM locally with ds4
So if LLMs can write C really "well" - as in they can keep track of all the memory allocations, branches and conditions that would prevent the typical memory problems associated with C...then do we even need Rust anymore? The control of the memory allocations and layout in C does theoretically mean you can ultra-optimise the code. The LLMs can write 1000s of unit tests and they're really good at fuzzing.

I don't know Rust well enough to understand what else it would provide over the safe memory guarentees?

I'm still meeting software people who are still very anti-AI...this is despite the strong evidence that a frontier model is superior to 99% of software engineers at writing code, producing documentation, testing, generating threat models, etc. IF prompted correctly.

As Antirez is using a non-frontier model for his work (via locally-running), then I think that is further proof that AI is ready for widespread use in software engineering.

I know HN folk don't like these kinds of websites with fancy animations and 80's style retro fonts...but I think this website actually contains the information that I needed in 1 page. I immediately knew what it was, what it required, and it provided the download links right there.

Opencode Go, with the Deepseek 4.1 Flash model feels like a bottomless pit, which is great for grunt work.
Flere-Imsaho··on Kev: Tiny Jev-like family of decision models built on top of Qwen3.5
This. I see LLMs building smaller bespoke models on-the-fly to achieve a desired goal.

I'm not sure about transferring subscriptions between Pipe and Brave...?

> Nobody is going to want to learn how anything that is not AI actually works, tech people insist that AI will replace teachers and trainers, politicians seem to be listening, and non-tech people now resent technology

I disagree with most of your post, but this one the most.

Non-tech people already resent technology... Try and sit next to a non tech person use a desktop pc. It wasn't until the smart phone that the average person started to use technology like you or I recognise. And that's only because it's been simplified to the extreme for them. (I don't blame them btw).

AI is such a step change for learning and teaching... For anyone who is inquisitive. Ask it endless questions, explore ideas, get it to generate images to help you...

Honestly I'd take that over the hostile vomit that is the google playstore. That thing is an offence to my senses...so many colors and animations trying to grab my attention.

Lots of text about "safety" as well. Notice how OpenAI didn't mention it once in their announcement:

https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-sol-and-luna/

Yeah think I'll be using OpenAI/Deepseek/etc from now on. I don't need your model to decide for me what is and isn't safe.

Flere-Imsaho··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
Hi - first congratulations, System One looks really promising.

The Doom demo really help me, at least, to understand how System One differs from LLMs. However the first demo (Side-by-side demonstration) - I'm struggling to understand what is going on here!

Flere-Imsaho··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
> Jev can only generate structured output, right? This is probably super useful for classification/routing/scoring,

My first thought was that it would be ideal for robotics? As in control of limbs, general planning, route finding, etc.

Flere-Imsaho··on Eating Fruit Skins
Skin on fruit is full of fiber, along with potatoes, etc. I only ever take the skin off things if it really bothers me.

I'm 45 and only recently realised the grapes in the UK are "seedless". Grapes with seeds was not a pleasant experience when I accidentally ate one whilst in Croatia.
Flere-Imsaho··on Eating Fruit Skins
I too am intrigued, so I found the following:

https://itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/banana-peel-bacon/

Sounds simple enough - is there anyone who has done this? Bacon is a hard one to replicate!

Flere-Imsaho··on UK Government to force tech companies to verify age of users to protect children
Indeed, I've only seen minimal discussion of it on X. Had me thinking it's fake news, or misinformation.
Flere-Imsaho··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
Also the support contacts, which require you to send system logs to VMWare of you want them to fix something. For a lot of companies this is a no go.

Waste of money

> quietly built a proxmox cluster

Why is your place of work not moving wholesale to Proxmox? It's mad that HyperV is chosen as a solution in this day and age.

Flere-Imsaho··on Doomscrolling Ourselves to Death
I use the phrase "brain rot" for the low quality stuff that I scroll through. I do really hope that we retain the original meaning of "doom scrolling", as I think it's still as relevant today as the COVID days.
Flere-Imsaho··on The moral panic over data centres is foolish
> NIMBYs are the enemy of all that is good in the world.

Also see the Green parties / Greenpeace and the decline of nuclear power stations. We could have had clean, cheap energy across Europe and America, but the fear of nuclear is fully embedded in the public psyche.

Flere-Imsaho··on GPT-6 Astra
> Would you have any interest in sharing what you've made?

It's a collaborative mapping app. I hope to release and opensource it one day. Under the hood uses MQTT for users to subscribe to map updates from other users.

The problem with it, like other apps of this nature, is that it requires the "network effect". ie. enough people using it to make it useful. So I'm trying to make it useful for a small group or organisation.

I have a million ideas flying around in my head, and given the capabilities of modern LLMs, they are all within reach. It can be a bit overwhelming sometimes...

Flere-Imsaho··on GPT-6 Astra
> Like, what's the point, if the next AI can do it in 5 seconds?

I built a phone app recently, not released to the public, just an idea I had for ages but could never spend the time actually building. Its 100% vibe coded, and took me a few weekends to build... I'm talking a few hours in total.

The point I'm making is that you now have the power to create stuff you would never have had the time to build. You can think big, wild stuff. Experimentation. Throw-away code.

What a time to be alive!

Flere-Imsaho··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
The internet is not supposed to work like this. The network was designed for robustness and fault tolerance, which allows it to reroute data if parts of the network fail.

Why are we all depending on one entity for it all to work? Makes me mad.

Flere-Imsaho··on OpenClaw 2.0, Accidentally
Yeah loads.

Some of which I was aware of, and didn't consider enough of a risk to mitigate. It found others which I wasn't aware of, such as open ports on printers, etc.

LLMs are really good at the cyber security stuff.

I've also tried using the LLM to tell me what it sees in my security cameras, which it's also really good at. For example identifying a rabbit run in my garden, which I built from scratch, so I know no other exists like it in the universe. I've not hooked that up in an automated fashion though.

Flere-Imsaho··on OpenClaw 2.0, Accidentally
I don't use OpenClaw, but rather Hermes. I have a set schedule that kicks off Hermes to scan my home network for anything out of sorts, and generate a summary that it sends to me via SimpleX. For this, Hermes uses tools such as nmap, etc (it decided which tools were best).

I think if I was running my own business or organisation, I'd be using it more. However, for "home" stuff, like you I struggle to think of useful tasks for agents to do for me.

It's all going to be who has the best and most tasteful ideas. Interesting times indeed.

Flere-Imsaho··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
This type of post is why I come to hackernews. Up until now I've been depressed that we don't have a proper "Linux" phone os, but your explanation has properly laid bare the reason why that's a bad idea.

You've given me hope for the future!

Flere-Imsaho··on Europe's scorched landscapes seen from space after summer heatwaves
The world is greener now than in the 1980s according to NASA:

https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/global-gree...

Now does that translate to better crops? I don't know, but humans will do whatever it takes to adapt, so we really need to stop with the climate scaremongering.

Flere-Imsaho··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
> Why is this statistic relevant?

More people, low wages, no taxes, no infrastructure for said people.

So very relevant, no?

Flere-Imsaho··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
I think it's even worse than that. If at some remote possibility that a criminal does get caught and charged with a crime, the prisons are full (37% foreign criminals [0]) so they won't do any prison time, and therefore no justice is served. In fact our prisons are so full, violent criminals are being let out after serving only their half term [1].
