FireBeyond··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
This is a little simplistic. Investing more in the quality component of the org - valuable.

TM3 is basically "if this is your approach to shipping sooner / more quickly, then you're going to have a bad time." It's not a solution for a delayed project. It's not "you shouldn't invest more in the infrastructure of a large project" (or at least not blindly).

FireBeyond··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
Some of that is already happening, in DC of all places, where the DC Police Officer's Union is protesting against use of Flock by ... the DC Police (albeit Internal Affairs).

Something about "this technology is invasive and violates the right to privacy of our members"...

FireBeyond··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
WPE’s filings, quoted Matt saying that, and then pointed out that the WP.org IP address was within the Foundation’s AS.
FireBeyond··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
You should have a look at who is or was on the Foundation Board. Matt, a buddy and some other AWOL friend.

And he has said “I am WP.org, it has nothing to do with the Foundation” which is weird because the Foundation hosts it.

All of these entities have been very … fluid … when it comes to how Matt chooses to utilize them.

FireBeyond··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
Nope. WPE gave hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to the Foundation and community. Hell they put $70K to the PDX event where he got on stage and shit talked them, after banning them from attending and sponsoring the event (no refund though). They give to the OSS community in plenty of resources.

Guess who owns an irrevocable, free, exclusive and universal commercial license for WP? Automattic. They got it the same day the project was gifted to the Foundation. Matt’s claims pushed for WPE to give damages to Automattic, not the community or foundation.

WP is OSS because it is as built on other projects and had to be.

Matt is not the victim here.

Minority shareholders with far less ownership can and have successfully sued corporations for a failure to represent their interests too.
FireBeyond··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
Automattic, you mean. But it’s easy to get confused. WP.org is him, not the Foundation, but is hosted on Foundation servers. WP Engine owes Automattic money, not the Foundation, or community, but Automattic because the Foundation silently granted Automattic commercial rights to WP, the same day they told the community they were the WordPress stewards to keep it free from commercial influence.
FireBeyond··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
Says who? If one thing all this legal stuff has surfaced, it’s that has been entirely … opaque … about who is what and owns what. He’s said WP.org is him, personally and nothing to do with the foundation despite it being hosted on foundation servers, made comments about the foundation being independent when it’s just him, a buddy, and another awol buddy. And declined to mention that when Automattic “gifted” WP to the Foundation “so it could be free from corporate interests” that the Foundations first act, that same day, was to grant Automattic a free, irrevocable, exclusive, universal license.

And that WPE didn’t owe the Foundation anything for their alleged issues, but their for profit competitor, his private company.

Matt has used “foundation”, wp.org, wp.com and Automattic interchangeably for years based on whichever definition was most convenient to him that day, so I don’t really see “it’s clear exactly what people were getting into”.

FireBeyond··on Ask HN: Hypothesis: Cellular providers are deprioritizing voice calls?
Voice "circuits" are largely a thing of the past. Most cellular calls are VoLTE or VoIP directly (though I'm certain there's shaping/QOS/etc., in play).

On the spam topic though, it is, or was, a common tactic for some spammers to do just enough on the call initialization front to generate a missed call or similar without actually ringing a device, leave no VM, the goal being to prompt you to return the call. Though this doesn't fit with the time delay aspect.

FireBeyond··on Tesla moves to electrify trucking after a decade of work and delays
What a silly puff piece that ignores a whole host of history, and leaves with more questions than answers.

Not a single mention of Pepsi, or UPS who largely canceled their orders after waiting in Pepsi's case seven years to get 36 trucks.

But wait, it was parts and battery shortage! Except Tesla, you already said it wasn't batteries back in 2024.

Well, parts, battery shortages, the pandemic, semiconductors... and poor design on windows... completely changing axle lubrication...

But finally! You can order as many trucks as you'd like! Wait, that's what they told Pepsi and UPS, who ordered about 1,000 each. See what happened the last time they promised that!

> though charging infrastructure remains a hurdle, a person familiar with the matter told TechCrunch on the condition of anonymity

You will have a hard time charging them, when you get them, but you can order them and give Tesla your money now, and isn't that what really matters?

> “We fully admit we were wrong about the windows,” he said. “Turns out there’s a lot of infrastructure in the world, whether it’s a badge reader, or your toll booth, or you’re talking to somebody on a call box. There’s all kinds of stuff right at that height, and it became evident that we needed a roll-down window in order to make that infrastructure easier to interface with.”

If there's ever a tale of "Life at Tesla" beyond dealing with Musk... it's "Tech bros think they know better than domain experts".

> While Musk was missing, he did pre-tape a segment that ran before the event started. In the video, he said the Semi will be the “funnest truck to drive.”

Oh, well, that's a commercial driving priority, let's be clear.

> He also promised Tesla’s partial automation features (curiously missing from the Semi despite the years of delays) will be added in the “near future.”

No way. FSD for trucks is "Coming soon. Near future." We'll be able to set our clocks by it! This year. For sure. Or next. But real soon now.

What an utterly uncredulous article.

I haven't moved any goalpost. My original comment was that Israeli lobbying organizations have called for MSF to be proscribed as a terrorist organization... and they have:

FireBeyond··on The darker side of being a doctor
I frankly don't. Here we have a discussion that is predominantly about software engineers, and as a subset of those, those who are employed at FAANGs...

... and they're variably being compared to physicians, specialists, "median healthcare professionals" (whatever that means).

I'm more breaking up that these comparisons... don't really make a lot of sense, the way many of the arguments here are going.

FireBeyond··on The darker side of being a doctor
ER docs, of whom I know many in my town, with a median city household income of $79K, median home price of $529K, are all in a range of $300-500K. Anesthesiology, $600K+.
FireBeyond··on The darker side of being a doctor
I disagree with this. It's more like "Doctor at the Mayo Clinic" or Johns Hopkins.

I live in a capital city of 60,000. Unemployment 4.5%, median household $79,000. Here, you're not seeing >$150K in IT unless you're a Director, or more likely a VP level employee.

Conversely, I drive by multiple homes that are being built or were recently built by physicians living in the area that are in the $2M range (our median home price in the area is just under $530K.

You can't say "the subset of one thing compared to the spectrum of another", because testers, tech writers (the "median IT professional") are not generally clearing high six digits even at FAANG (well, Netflix maybe, which is an outlier of an outlier).

FireBeyond··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Okay. This absolutely sounds like the response of a terrorist organization:

> MSF had no indication that Fadi Al Wadiya might have been involved in military activity of any kind prior to his killing by the Israeli Forces. If the Israeli authorities had any reliable information about Fadi’s involvement in military activity, they never shared it with MSF either prior to his killing or when we reached out immediately after he was killed to ask for clarifications around the circumstances of his death.

> We would never knowingly employ people engaging in military activity. Any employee who engages in military activity would pose a danger to our staff and patients.

So let me ask you, is MSF a terrorist or terrorist supporting organization. If so, why?

Much of the reason Hamas is full of fire and brimstone for the US is that the US continues to supply Israel with the bombs and weapons used on their people.

FireBeyond··on Diesel prices could crush Republicans in the heartland
I find that generally "Independent", or "Non-political" or "Libertarian" in the US today usually means Republican (although admittedly the first is the lesser of these).

Like my County's Sheriff, up for re-election, as an Independent, "I voted for Trump three times". Or the County Auditor, also Independent, "I voted multiple times for Trump and for Bush."

FireBeyond··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
Well, there's a lot more low-hanging fruit there to be had.

It was sadly too trivial using various Discord search engines to find things like BDSM servers advertising to "14-28 year olds", or ones where minors openly sell NSFW content.

Discord as a whole is oftentimes enabling the communities to prey on those users, not just making the users more identifiable.

Responding here to answer the dead comment which feels entirely disingenuous.

No-one mentioned "using ambulances as cover". That is separate from "enemy combatants are acting in a first responder capacity, but are still enemy combatants, therefore the entire first response effort is a viable target". That is a war crime that Israel regularly likes to commit.

> These are the same people who view women as property, homosexuality as a reason for execution, and 13 years olds as viable brides.

Halacha? Acquiring your wife through kiddushin? Only a husband can issue a get (divorce document)? Women in agunahs (dead marriages)? Sounds like property to me.

Rabbinic law makes capital punishment effectively impossible, but the Orthodox sects do everything possible to punish: disownment, both family and social and actual exile from physical communities.

Don't girls reach halachic adulthood at 12?

And lets not throw stones here. Even in the US, you can get married with parental consent or a judge's consent at any age in Mississippi, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

You can get married at 15 in Hawaii and Kansas.

You are "grandfathered" into sexual consent (not as in "accepting of marital rape" but "it's no longer statutory rape if she's your wife") when you do so.

So we may not want to be lording it too much on some guise of moral superiority, particularly given that most of the marriages that happen at those ages are not "young couple got pregnant, want to do the right thing" but "older man in conservative/religious community saw young vulnerable girl and decided he had to have her".

Israel likes to argue that Hamas embeds fighters with first responders, which even if so, they're still responding to injured. But Israel considers this not even collateral damage but justified.

Mind you Israel is currently funding a lobbyist organization in the UK to flag Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) as a terrorist group (because many years ago a couple of people who had affiliations with other anti-Israel groups were found to be also affiliated with MSF).

FireBeyond··on Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker’s death
> Of course, in most jurisdictions nothing stops you from going to court first if you like. But most modern-thinking judges tend to take a dim view if you turn up in front of them without having given ADR a go first.

“Nothing is stopping you” - most TOSes mandate arbitration, and unless you have something particularly egregious and a sympathetic judge the first thing on the docket is going to be a Motion to Dismiss.

And agreed. For better or worse. My minor stepdaughter was involved in a car accident. No liability was found, and the other party tried to sue her in Small Claims court which, in my state, you can’t sue a minor in (as no attorneys are permitted, so you’d have a minor representing themselves). The judge noted this, and told the other party “if you want to sue you will need to sue her parents or guardians”… and then tried to push us into binding arbitration anyway.

Which of course got my insurance company upset and involving attorneys on procedural/constitutional law, about challenging the judges authority to push us into that given there was no jurisdiction to hear the case in the first place so there was none to enforce us into arbitration (which in itself was an entirely separate farce, including where the “neutral” arbitrator berated me and said “I don’t understand why, as a person, if you know your insurance is going to be the one paying, you don’t just agree to give them all they’re asking for.”).
