Fins··on Secret Memos Show the Government Has Been Lying About Backpage All Along
That's pretty much the case with just about every "sex trafficking" bust, isn't it? Lots of talk about rescuing children and what not, but in the end women, who are supposedly being helped, are hauled off to the slammer, customers, too, and not a single trafficking victim is found. But that doesn't make for good headlines, so the latter part is rarely reported.

Backpage got caught in a perfect combination of "baptists and bootleggers" where, except for people who actually do try to help trafficking victims, exploited kids, etc., who all found BP quite useful and cooperative, everybody, left and right, wanted to shut it down for purely ideological reasons. In the end, nobody came out ahead.

Fins··on A+, the Programming Language of Morgan Stanley
In case of MUMPS (or M, these days) it seems to live on as Cache and GT.M, among other things, and is used not only in healthcare but in finance as well.
Fins··on How the Great Truth Dawned
Germany or Italy did pretty well, though. And Russia never considered itself just some one other country. Comparisons have always been with "Europe".

Not to say that say Mussorgsky (as mentioned somewhere above) isn't a top-notch composer, but if you have, as your comparatives, Dostoyevsky vs. Dickens (for example) or Mussorgsky vs. Wagner, you'd probably pick Dostoyevsky...

Fins··on How the Great Truth Dawned
They are good composers, no doubt, but probably not quite in the same league in, if anything, importance (not going to argue personal preferences in music) as, say, Beethoven earlier or Stravinsky later.
Fins··on How the Great Truth Dawned
This might be also because while our writers (I am not really sure about poets (Pushkin just does not seem to travel as well as Dostoyevsky, or Shakespear) from the 19th century on actually are "world class" so to speak, Russian painters, composers and architects up until early 1900s were really quite derivative and second rate. With all the complexes Russians tend to have aboutr being compared to Europe, or being considered (or not considered) a part of Europe, idolization of writers is quite understandable.
Fins··on How the Great Truth Dawned
I, for one, downvoted it because at some point it becomes really tiresome to see the same stale apologia of "baaah, you all just don't understand Marx properly" (and neither, apparently, did any and all leaders of any and all countries where marxists of any ilk ever came to power, because it always ended up the same) from people who had never seen it up close and personal. And this being HN most likely enjoying the lifestyle that is only enabled by "capitalists" willing to pay quite ridiculous amounts of money for poking at the keyboard all day...

Calling it well-written and informative is very much akin looking for kernel of truth in whatever logorrhea comes out of Stomfront or that Flat Earth Society.

Fins··on Walmart sues Tesla over fires at stores fitted with its solar panels
Evidence of what? Of Saint Elon calling people pedophiles because they laughed at his harebrained ideas? Of Teslaclaiming to have the world's safest vehicles when between Musk's marketing and serious product deficiencies they quite literally kill people? Of and Musk personally being regularly found making fraudulent statements? And so on and so forth. I didn't realize than I need to provide backing evidence that water is wet. But Tesla's PR troll brigade would just say that it is the shorts' conspiracy anyway, because Saint Elon says water is solid, and so it is.
Fins··on Walmart sues Tesla over fires at stores fitted with its solar panels
Compared to your average SV outfit like Tesla? It most likely is.
Fins··on Walmart sues Tesla over fires at stores fitted with its solar panels
When did Musk ever settle, if there is an opportunity to open his mouth and make things worse?

I just can see explanations coming from fanboys that Walmart sells engine oil and is therefore part of the ICE mafia out to get Tesla. And they short the stock, too! /s

Fins··on Jaguar and Audi SUVs Fail to Dent Tesla’s Electric-Car Dominance
Only if the compromises in a Tesla do not outweigh the presence of fart jokes (well, and no oil changes).

But then, I just honestly do not see how anyone in good conscience could give even a red cent to Elon.

Fins··on What is Haberman?
So did I!

I was half-expecting that HN would have greater appreciation of CS' writings than the general population...

Fins··on Rental firm walks away from Tesla order after quality dispute
I'm not sure, to be really useful in general case it would have to understand a good number of languages (what if you rent a car on vacation abroad and find that you can't control anything unless you learn the local language?), work in noisy conditions, understand accents, and apart from navigation entry (although that usually serves as an exercises in zen and meditation, as you're trying not to put your fist through the dashboard as it tries to navigate you anywhere except where you actually want to go) it is much faster to turn the knob than expressing what you need in spoken word... Makes for a nice marketing video though.
Fins··on Rental firm walks away from Tesla order after quality dispute
That's certainly a valid approach, but most people (me included) actually want to adjust the climate control while driving, for various reasons.

Really, once I was quite happy with a car that had roll-down windows and no a/c, but when we are talking about a premium-priced car in 2019 expectations are somewhat different.

Fins··on Rental firm walks away from Tesla order after quality dispute
...and this is how we end up with people driving through fire trucks. I haven't sat in the 3, but I did drive Model S and also played with the e-Tron's controls while waiting for an oil change (which ids pretty much the only advantage of an electric car I could possibly think of). Controlsd in both are very "neat". As long as you are sitting on a showroom floor. The very thought of actually trying to live with either while driving makes me pine for my very first car, a rusted through Chevy Citation that I paid $300 for.

Just because it is a good selling point for a certain subset of population that likes new and shiny and does not mind mowing people over in the process does not make it a good thing.

Fins··on Big O Notation – Using not-boring math to measure code’s efficiency
If anything, a myth that persistent must have something behind it. (I've zero interest in FAANGs so I would not know if they do or do not really ask it).

There's no question that a competent, well-rounded programmer should know about these algorithms' existence and when to use them. But whether testing if said programmer can implement them from scratch during an interview... that's a million dollar question whether these questions provide optimal outcomes. Anecdotally, yeah, sure, I did these things. In S/370 assembler at that. But did I use 90% of them since then(and that was when Apple was the only FAANG in existence)? No. So I think the feeling is that this kind of interview tests not so much how good, or experienced, or what not, you are at programming but rather how desperate you are to work at that kind of company to spend a good amount of time memorizing algos and data structures you've learned and forgotten years ago.

Fins··on Big O Notation – Using not-boring math to measure code’s efficiency
Do you really need to be able to "invert a binary tree" to move a button in gmail to an even less convenient location? It's not even that you need to know all those things to work at many positions in FANGs. It's about making sure that someone who can do that does not, God forbid, go somewhere else and does something actually useful for the humanity.
Fins··on Ask HN: If your job was remote, which city would you choose to live in?
I've been working remotely from Austin (well, Northern suburbs for a bit under a year now, and after San Jose absolutely love it.

If you have to commute it might be tough (number of people here is growing faster than number of roads), but for remote work it's perfectly fine. And when I want to get to downtown, it takes me about the same time it would've taken me in San Jose (and I lived in SJ itself), but unlike SJ there's actually something to do in Austin.

It certainly does get hot here in the summer, but I like that there are seasons here.

Cost of living is significantly better than the Bay Area (and I would argue the quality of life isn't any worse either). And salaries, unless you're aiming for top position at a FANG aren't that much worse.

Also, people are much nicer around here.

Fins··on The Case for Keeping San Francisco's Disputed Murals
While this particular mural might have very few redeeming qualities per se, it's the justifications used to remove it that are dangerous (also quite stupid, but given people they are coming from that is to be expected). It's just a generally bad idea to allow things to be destroyed under such pretenses.

That, and for the money they want to do it, they could've done something to make SF schools better, it's not like they were giving particularly good education there to begin with.

Fins··on “My GitHub account has been restricted due to US sanctions as I live in Crimea”

Fins··on Tesla co-founder and CTO JB Straubel stepping down
This. Tesla's carts do not work for me from practicality POV, but even if they released the most bestest car in the world, I will never, ever give Elon a red cent.
Fins··on Tesla co-founder and CTO JB Straubel stepping down
Well, yeah. Except it was the guy who got called a pedophile for his trouble who was rescuing children, while Musk prancing around like an incompetent buffoon.
Fins··on Tesla Q2 2019 Letter
Are you seriously suggesting that something that does require you to pay attention to a screen entire time you're using it (and touchscreen in a moving vehicle is not the easiest thing to operate even when you're not the one driving) is less distracting that something that is operable entirely by touch?

I'll stick with my experience trying to operate both. ANd I'll stick with cars that have real controls. Not that there were much reliable data yet, what with Tesla being pretty much the only ones who made something like that. Their crash statistics aren't all that impressive, BTW, but it is hard to discern which ones are pure accidents, and which ones are tied to controls, or AutoPilot, or general stupidity.

It will be interesting to see crash statistics of e-Tron vs. regular Q series, though, that would give some apples to apples comparison options. But then that assumes that Audi can actually sell a meaningful number of them...

Fins··on Tesla Q2 2019 Letter
Sounds like just the thing one should be doing in a moving vehicle! /s
Fins··on Tesla Q2 2019 Letter
And difference between "did" and "should or should not do" is even more massive, although completely beyond Elon's (admittedly rather limited) powers of understanding.
Fins··on The dockless scooter industry is going after a repossessor and a bike shop owner
Good, we need more folks like these in every other city these obnoxious things had been unleashed upon.
Fins··on The High Priest of Heterodoxy
Fair enough. As long as you don't try to gloss over that the left capable of violence just fine by itself, and that self-appointed "antifascists" need to be stopped, too. And bring up all the left terrorists of past decades, too. Red Brigades (very much antifa and all) alone killed about as many people as everything you list here. Although I do not think I've heard of "many" Q-Anon related murders, and as far as I recall nobody got killed at the pizzas place.

I do find it interesting that any time antifa gangsters go on a rampage it's always because there are some "armed agitators", and basically they asked for it, and it's no big deal anyway, but one right-wing nutjob does something and it's always a part of some "vast right-wing conspiracy". These double standards are rather tiresome, especially if you manage to still remember that left-wing governments are way ahead of rightwingers in body count.

Fins··on How to assess the quality of garments (2014)
You're more likely to find items made in low-cost countries those lines, though. I had Sport jeans fall apart much sooner than I expected (which for gauze-thin linen isn't that much to begin with), while E.Zegna stuff has been going strong for 10+ years now.

But at least it's not Armani Exchange, which is H&M quality at best.

Fins··on Facebook's fake account problem
Or, possibly, one could object to threat inflation and using words to mean whatever you want them to mean, rather than the commonly accepted definitions.

There's enough bad in what Trump says (not as much in what he manages to do, and so far at least his foreign policy is... not great, but better than the dumpster fire that other candidate oversaw).

Fins··on The High Priest of Heterodoxy
Probably the same place real liberals are... not getting elected because two-party system and primaries make it so the more outrageous people make it to the elections.
Fins··on How to assess the quality of garments (2014)
At least Zegna is quite a bit cheaper than Loro Piana, so it might be a better value, at their main lines. Diffusion ones like Z Zegna might be iffier. But pretty much everything is getting to the "not what it used to be" stage.
