Finnucane··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
The golden rule is becoming, never update. But then, I used Snow Leopard until El Capitan, and could no longer get software updates I needed.
Finnucane··on Gen Z are shunning private equity's restaurant takeover
The guys who ran the Friendly's ice cream chain actually bought the company back from the PE group they'd sold it to, but it was too late, the damage was done. It still exists, but greatly reduced, a lot of locations closed.
Finnucane··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
But your non-smart fridge doesn't support surveillance capitalism or a subscription model! How will investors keep making money on you if you think you can just decide for yourself when you need to shop for food?
Finnucane··on Gen Z are shunning private equity's restaurant takeover
This isn't exactly a new thing in the restaurant world. Investment group buys local operation, franchises the heck out of it, until it's stretched so thin it implodes. The history of the business is littered with such corpses. (Or zombies, that persist in a few locations or offshoot chains in other regions).
Finnucane··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
"In this essay, I want to express my frustration, and describe how I’m finding value in AI for writing.'

"I don't like the way other people use AI, but the way I use it is okay."

I'm going to stop reading right there. I don't want to read that either.

Finnucane··on Ask HN: Do You Use Siri?
No.
Finnucane··on Stocks had a great Monday, but something alarming occurred not seen since 1999
"“The leadership is battling against weaker performance in the near term, and what has been selling off, so the creation of new lows has an easier glide path than the creation of new highs with today’s leadership,” he said."

Well, that's totally clear, then.

Finnucane··on We Must Create the Shit Machine
No . . . shit.
Finnucane··on Sam Altman to brief UN Security Council next week
Will there be a small vial of white powder?
Finnucane··on I don't like passkeys
Asking Amazon and Paypal to not do something bad is a big ask.
Finnucane··on I don't like passkeys
I've resisted passkeys for some of the reasons listed. I use third-party password managers, they're device/system independent, and I can export the data when I want to. I don't see passkeys as a big advantage, or perhaps I should say the bigger advantage isn't really for the _user_.

Of course, at the rate we see security failures everywhere, I'm not entirely convinced writing your passwords on post-it notes wasn't such a bad idea after all.

Finnucane··on 66% of cordless mowers overstate runtime by an avg of 34% (Audit of 178 models)
Manufacturers test their products under conditions that overstate real-world performance? Shit, my faith in capitalism is shattered!

I also overstate runtime when I am using my reel mower.

Finnucane··on Negativland, Culture Jamming, and the Art of Making Something New
Hey, you know, internet friends can just grow apart. It's a natural result of getting internet older.
Finnucane··on Negativland, Culture Jamming, and the Art of Making Something New
"We're not that smart, and we're not that stupid."
Finnucane··on Ask HN: Are 80s high school hobby programmers overwhelmingly pro-AI?
This one does not.
Finnucane··on Donald Trump rejects calls from tech bosses for AI slowdown
The tech bosses have no say in the matter?
Finnucane··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
I gave up on bike computers years ago after a couple of tries to find one that would survive New England winter. Then I realized I didn't really need to give a crap about anything a bike computer was telling me.
Finnucane··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
Even commodity markets recognize different grades of product. The oil market separately prices different grades of oil, different refined products. All that really matters is that when you go to the market to buy, you can say, "I need X amount of this grade of this product" and that is what you will get. If AI models can be sold that way, you basically have a commodity market.
Finnucane··on Dimethyl Mercury Exposure Incident at MIT
Apparently the article was, in fact, trolling with inaccurate speculative 'information.'
Finnucane··on AI-Written Code Is Still *Your* Code. Are You OK with That?
Which isn't exactly a new problem, just going to get scaled up.
Finnucane··on Aptera announces a $44M to design and build a solar electric vehicle
Not everyone has a garage or driveway. Where I live, I couldn't plug in at my house. I also don't need a car every day (in fact, right now we don't have one). Being able to charge on the street would reduce the need to find charging spots all the time.
Finnucane··on “It works better in the app”
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness
Finnucane··on The New Student Visa Policy Doesn't Add Up
Sure, but the goal is to drive away foreign students and hurt university research programs. It's a stupid goal, but that is what they want. What can't be controlled must be destroyed.
Finnucane··on Zohran and the Short Link
Politicians have been doing this for a while now. I think the idea is to project more of a 'one of us' vibe and not stand on formality, which creates a vibe of being part of a separate class.
Finnucane··on Do Golf Courses Use More Water Than Data Centres?
It's a golf course.
Finnucane··on Do Golf Courses Use More Water Than Data Centres?
That doesn't make it not a waste of resources.
Finnucane··on Peppermint oil reduces blood pressure by 8.48 mmHg in small study
Those old York's Peppermint Patty ads were on to something.
Finnucane··on Do Golf Courses Use More Water Than Data Centres?
Maybe we should close a few golf courses.
Finnucane··on Ask HN: Why do devs still respect YC/HN?
Stockholm syndrome.
Finnucane··on Contrail-free flying could help the climate
But if we don't have contrails, how will people be able to make up conspiracies about them?
