Finnucane··on The anxiety of the perfect loaf: the illusion of culinary precision
I worked at a culinary school for a while. In the bread kitchen they taught you the formula stuff, but also, to recognize what the dough would feel like, look like, even taste like, when it was right. They taught you how to adapt if the flour was a little drier today than yesterday, if the kitchen was a little more humid.
Finnucane··on The Xteink X4 E-Ink Reader
>t's easy to write a HTML & CSS layout engine to support most of the epub spec

And yet reading systems fail to do that.

Finnucane··on A deadly fungus that can infect cats and people is spreading
None of my cats would eat those. Regular soft cat treats have always worked better.
Finnucane··on A deadly fungus that can infect cats and people is spreading
When I had to give my cats thyroid pills, I mushed them into soft treats. This generally worked, but sometimes took a couple of tries. But this trick only works if the cat wants the treat more than they don't want the pill. A dog can be tricked into thinking the pill is the treat.

Flavored pill compounding is apparently also an option, but I've never tried it.

Finnucane··on Jeremy Clarkson, British TV Host, Says He Has Cancer
[insert Jeremy Clarkson meme here]
Finnucane··on Hacker News but for independent blogs
Isn't the whole point of Substack, etc. monetization, one way or another? Maybe I'm just a cranky old man, but that to me goes against 'independent'. But then, I'm not just old enough to remember when blogs weren't monetized, but remembering perusing Factsheet Five to see if there were any interesting new zines to trade with. Maybe you could mark the Substack blogs with a little swastika like an asterisk.
Finnucane··on Hacker News but for independent blogs
It's not stated explicitly, but I would assume that 'independent' blog means no Substack, no Medium, etc? Is that the case?
Finnucane··on The Manhoff Archives: Color photos of Stalin-era USSR taken by a US diplomat
The war, and also Stalin.
Finnucane··on Has AI already killed self-help nonfiction books?
Makes sense. Self-help books are kinda the human slop of the publishing business. Easily replaced by AI slop? Probably.
Finnucane··on Adobe Alternatives: list of alternatives for Adobe software
Quark as an alternative to Adobe? From the frying pan into a smaller frying pan?

My dream is raising the funds to buy FrameMaker away from Adobe.

Finnucane··on Your ePub Is fine
It's not a direct substitute at all. It's not intended to be. And--it's on the vendors for making crap software and not keeping up.
Finnucane··on Your ePub Is fine
No, the users need to be able to check for conformance. What we also need is for vendors to supply test platforms. Amazon, to its small credit, does this, which is good, because the subset of html/css they support is limited and poorly documented. Heck, I'd be happy if Apple, Kobo, and everyone else just kept good documentation and up to date!

Though these days I have to spend more time worrying about EAA and ADA compliance than anything else.

Finnucane··on Your ePub Is fine
'transitioned'
Finnucane··on If you are asking for human attention, demonstrate human effort
If you get a document from someone and they say "I have no idea if this has any value and I couldn't be arsed to check," it's not unreasonable to presume that it probably has no value.
Finnucane··on Show HN: I Derived a Pancake
I will do yeast-raised waffles but usually don't bother with pancakes. I usually don't have buttermilk so I mix yogurt and milk. I just eyeball it, about 1/4-1/3 yogurt makes a good consistency. While food science is fun, there's no way I'm doing that much work on a Saturday morning.
Finnucane··on The new bibliomaniacs
There's no environmental cost for ebooks? Are they produced by magic?
Finnucane··on The new bibliomaniacs
I have a fair number of autographed books, but I work in publishing so a lot of them are signed by friends and people I've worked with. Which means there's no way I'd willingly part with them. I'm less interested in 'collecting' as such so much any more. And my cookbooks all show visible signs of use.
Finnucane··on Americans Are Keeping Their Cars Longer Than Ever–and Remaking the Auto Industry
Yeah, my dad couldn't understand why I kept my first car for ten years. He kept bugging me to trade it in. Even then, I couldn't afford to. But cars do last longer, on average now. Admittedly, the two I had were both Hondas, and they don't die.
Finnucane··on Americans Are Keeping Their Cars Longer Than Ever–and Remaking the Auto Industry
My dad was of the new-car-every-three years generation. I had two cars for a combined 27 years. And the second one I bought used, with 48K miles already on it. For most of the time I had those cars, fixing them was far less expensive than buying a new car (we had a budget of about $1200/yr for that, most years that was enough). For the amount we actually needed a car (which is now none) the cost of a new car would have been insane.
Finnucane··on Siddhartha (1922): Competence Porn – before it was cool
A monk asked Zhao Zhou, "Does even the AI have Buddha-nature?" Zhao Zhou kicked the monk in the nuts.
Finnucane··on Y Combinator's CEO says he ships 37,000 lines of AI code per day
"he was on a 72-day shipping streak."

This guy seriously needs to find a hobby.

Finnucane··on Y Combinator's CEO says he ships 37,000 lines of AI code per day
Whatever you can ship, I can ship better. I can ship anything better than you.
Finnucane··on Show HN: Nutrepedia – nutrition info in 29 locales built with Clojure and Htmx
The search seems a bit weird. A search for salmon includes almonds in the results, and a search for spinach includes Tahitian taro.
Finnucane··on The SLAX Scripting Language: An Alternate Syntax for XSLT
That was my impression also. Anyone working with complex xml documents is going to want xslt/xpath 2 and 3 and probably xquery as well. This isn't going to offer any improvement over that.
Finnucane··on After decades on Linux, FreeBSD gave me a reason to switch operating systems
This is definitely sending some mixed messages. BSD is stable, but the software he tries to install keeps crashing. BSD is really fast, but everything takes longer to do. Just reading this, I have no idea if I can use this for anything or not! (And I say that knowing the Mac I'm typing on right now has BSD ancestry in its kernel.)
Finnucane··on Netflix Wiz creates app to slash AI bills, then open sources it
"But to date, the settings on these tools are somewhat oblique to end users."

At least we can say this wasn't written by AI. Only a human with a spellchecker would have made this error.

Finnucane··on Volkswagen blocks Home Assistant by requiring client assertion
And have been convinced there is no alternative. And if you suggest investing in public transit or building mixed-use neighborhoods that don't require car access they'll pop their suburbanite heads.
Finnucane··on AI sticker shock hits corporate America
"Most people default to automating tasks they dislike rather than tasks most valuable to the company,"

Well, no shit, but also: suggests those tasks have questionable value? And also: this is why I learned to write code in the first place.

Finnucane··on Can we have the day off?
1 And afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said unto Pharaoh: 'Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel: Let My people go, that they may hold a feast unto Me in the wilderness.'2 And Pharaoh said: 'Who is the LORD, that I should hearken unto His voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, and moreover I will not let Israel go.'

3 And they said: 'The God of the Hebrews hath met with us. Let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest He fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.'4 And the king of Egypt said unto them: 'Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, cause the people to break loose from their work? get you unto your burdens.'5 And Pharaoh said: 'Behold, the people of the land are now many, and will ye make them rest from their burdens?'6 And the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying:7 'Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish aught thereof; for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying: Let us go and sacrifice to our God.9 Let heavier work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard lying words.'

10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying: 'Thus saith Pharaoh: I will not give you straw.11 Go yourselves, get you straw where ye can find it; for nought of your work shall be diminished.'12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.13 And the taskmasters were urgent, saying: 'Fulfil your work, your daily task, as when there was straw.'14 And the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, saying: 'Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your appointed task in making brick both yesterday and today as heretofore?'

Finnucane··on Smartphone Sales Are Tumbling
Price goes up, people are facing other inflationary pressures, worries about job security, etc. New phone is totally optional, easily punted. When was the last time phones had a really good new feature? (says guy with 2020 iphone SE that still works just fine)
