Well I helped create the Spanish Pirate Party so I strongly believe Funkwhale is perfectly moral. If my idols want some money, I'll be happy to go to a concert or buy their music from their webpage (but I don't think Jimi Hendrix will complain much these days).

I cannot upvote Funkwhale enough. I've had the need for something like this for a long long time now. A decade ago I was lucky to have my own desktop computer (before it was a shared one with my brother, before that I had just my parent's from time to time). Nowadays, between the smarphone, the work laptop, my desktop and my laptop I cannot possibly have all my music available all the time. And I don't like using spotify where I don't feel I own the songs and they get dropped from my lists. I used to be a fan of grooveshark, but that went down. Now I can have my pod and share it with my friends? On my own server? Accessible everywhere? I'm in.

I don't think this should be regulated at all. Apple should be able to impose their rules in their systems. Let's be clear about this, if people are choosing to buy these black-box closed handheld computing devices, there are consequences that come with that choice.

I work at a startup, we are 6 engineers, 2 of us are back-end engineers. I use PostgreSQL everyday. We tried using an ORM, and creating our own ORM, but it wasn't worth it for us. When you are dealing with medium-large databases, you're going to want to use indexes, to do custom queries with joins etc and it's just not worth it trying to use ORMs.

Yes, it's a monopoly, but that doesn't mean it's bad per-se. People are freely choosing to buy iPhones and there are alternatives. If the situation on the App Store was so bad, there wouldn't be enough good apps and perhaps people would choose other devices. No one is forcing any company to publish into the App Store.

I do agree with you. We, as somewhat intelligent beings, do not base our thinking on words or language AFAIK, even though it's our best way to convey ideas to others. And we learn through experience, way faster than GPT-3 does, with fewer shots. It looks like the attention mechanisms are what made these models actually start to understand things... But those attention mechanisms are still very raw and mainly designed to be easy to execute on current hardware, I wonder how fast will we refine that. Finally it looks like, once trained, these models don't learn when we use them. It definitely doesn't learn through experience and that's a major limitation on how intelligent it can be.

It is identity politics when a set of people asks for privileges based on the colour of their skin. It wasn't so long ago that the civil rights movement wanted to abolish classification based on race, now they demand it so that their race gets more privileges, in a sort of pay back. Now you have people behind these identity-based movements demanding things like quotas, X% of people at Big Corp. should be black, Y% should be women, a co-founder of Reddit resigns from board so that a black person replaces him. Qualifications needed: colour of their skin?

There will be no end to these problems until we recognise the problem is not in the colour of the skin. It's not one set of people, it's not even multiple sets of people (women/black people/latinos), it's not about heterogeneous sets of people (mixed-race). The problem is only within individuals, and their individual actions. If a black person kills another black person, that's bad. If a white person kills a black person, that's also bad. If a man kills a woman, that's bad. If a woman kills a man, that's bad. It looks like this is a difficult thing to accept nowadays.
