FilosofumRex··on François Chollet: The Arc Prize and How We Get to AGI [video]
AGI can't be defined, because it's the means by which definitions are created. You can only measure it contemporaneously by some consensus method such as ARC.

You can't define AGI, any more than you can define ASA (artificial sports ability). Intelligence, like athleticism changes both quantitively and qualitatively. The Greek Olympic champions of 2K yrs ago wouldn't qualify for high school championships today, however, they were once regarded as great athletes.

FilosofumRex··on We're not innovating, we're just forgetting slower
Abstraction explosion is surly detrimental to innovation, but so is "mathification", propelled by rapidly declining computational costs.

Romans tremendously progressed, despite using inferior "math" compared to the Greeks, and Americans compared to the English & French. Note how willingly China ships its top mathys to the US grad school while retaining its best engineers at all costs.

Only technologies that make it into tools/hardware (realware) will survive, the rest are destined to be e-wasted.

FilosofumRex··on Show HN: Fast Thermodynamic Calculations in Python
I use Aspen-Hysys which is extremely expensive for non-commercial users, and would love to have a Pythonic alternative.

That said, there's a long tail of features needed to make it practical (mole/mass/vol frac conversion, unit conversions, chemical Rxn, Steam tables etc.)

FilosofumRex··on 14 Million People Could Die in Next 5 Years Due to USAID Cuts, Study Finds
depends on what you define as "force". Force doesn't necessarily come from the barrel of a gun - Sean Diddy was just tried for forcing women into sex trafficking under American law.

Russia, Ukraine, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, El Salvador, and just about the entire Africa & South America have complained about political strings attached to USA-ID. yet, they'll gladly accept Chinese aid because it often only comes with economic conditions.

FilosofumRex··on 14 Million People Could Die in Next 5 Years Due to USAID Cuts, Study Finds
Why don't you look it up... why'd there be so much opposition to USA-ID in Africa, India, Brazil and South East Asian countries if it was preventing 14M deaths.

I believe the technical jargon for it is "soft power" - bribing locals to do what you can't force them to do, militarily.

FilosofumRex··on 14 Million People Could Die in Next 5 Years Due to USAID Cuts, Study Finds
Corrected version should read: "14M people could die in 5 years due to USA-ID cuts, AND LACK OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS' CARING, study finds".

USA-ID was not preventing deaths so much as it was funding the Western Elites' preferences over local priorities.

Yes indeed, if white British people were expelled from their lands and their homes confiscated by anyone, Norse, Germanic or Russian, it'd be considered ethnic cleansing and a war crime.

The jews of Ottoman era were Sephardic and Mizrahi jews of N. Africa, not the Yiddish speaking Ashkenazis of Germany, France and Russia.

FilosofumRex··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Your "terrorists" militias predate formation of Islamic Republic of Iran, in 1979. Yasser Arafat, and all other Palestinian liberators were also labeled as terrorists.

Can you name one Palestinian who has fought against Israel's occupation and is not considered a terrorist by you?

FilosofumRex··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
So why was it called Palestine Partition Plan, and not Israeli partition plan:

"Palestine Partition Plan" is United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 (II), adopted on November 29, 1947. This resolution, officially titled "Future Government of Palestine," recommended the partition of the British Mandate of Palestine into independent Arab and Jewish states, with Jerusalem and its environs to be placed under a special international regime."

Israel defines itself as a "jewish" state, and at least 50% of members of current governing parties in parliament are from religious parties and zionist parties.

In what sense Israel is not a theocracy.

FilosofumRex··on Is gravity just entropy rising? Long-shot idea gets another look
This is a better YouTube video describing granular physics and shows the speed (amplitude) of vibrations can cause counterintuitive arrangements of particles.

At lower speeds you get something akin to Newtonian gravity but at higher velocities you get something resembling MOND gravity where galaxies clusters and large voids appear - no dark matter needed.

FilosofumRex··on Last fifty years of integer linear programming: Recent practical advances (2024)
In most MILP domains, the underlying engineering know-how is more critical than mathematical formulations or CS coding: (that's why most OR groups operate independently of math or CS departments).

OSS never took off among professional engineers because they've have "skin in the game", unlike math and CS folks who just reboot, and pretend nothing is wrong.

FilosofumRex··on Building supercomputers for autocrats probably isn't good for democracy
Censoring is a lesser crime than murdering - the blood on the hands of the US, Israel and India far exceeds that of any so-called authoritarians.

It's US, not China that operates the world's largest prison system - you should ask prisoners if they rather be free subjects of an authoritarian regime or prisoners with due process in a democracy.

FilosofumRex··on Building supercomputers for autocrats probably isn't good for democracy
But yet, it's Americans who in large numbers want to go to war with China over an island next to it, or worst, over an ideology they don't understand.

Americans and other English-only countries are the most disinformed people in the world.

FilosofumRex··on FSE meets the FBI
Freedom of noise might be more descriptive than freedom of speech, in so far as the Western democracies are concerned.

In the US unlimited money has unlimited political power, so free speech, is irrelevant to power distribution, although it might have some academic or personal value for some.

FilosofumRex··on FSE meets the FBI
FSE {free speech extremists}, why would one have to be an extremist in country where free speech is enshrined in its Constitutional Law.
FilosofumRex··on Building supercomputers for autocrats probably isn't good for democracy
San Altman's lack of scruples, notwithstanding, I find the distinction between democracies (USA, Israel, India) that oppress, occupy and murder hundred of thousands, and autocratic regimes (Saudis, China, N. Korea) who censor, imprison, or execute a few dozens of their opponents, to be a distinction without a difference.

FilosofumRex··on Ask HN: How to learn CUDA to professional level
In you're in it for the money, then forget about HPC and the mathy stuff, unless you've a PhD in the application domain, no one will bother with you, even if you write CUDA at 120 wpm.

The real money is in mastering PTX, nvcc, cuobjdump, Nsight Systems, and Nsight Compute. CUTLASS is good open source code base to explore - start here https://christianjmills.com/series/notes/cuda-mode-notes.htm...

most importantly, stay off HN, get on Discord gpu mode, where real coders are: https://discord.com/invite/gpumode

FilosofumRex··on The wake effect: As wind farms expand, some can ‘steal’ each others’ wind
An Advocate/activist is someone who puts politics and policy ahead of science and economics, and it isn't limited to climate change either.

For example, it was gay advocacy/activists not heath sciences professionals who made sure more money was spent on Aids/HIV than all childhood diseases combined.

FilosofumRex··on The wake effect: As wind farms expand, some can ‘steal’ each others’ wind
Lol, you'll money on every MW, but make it up on volume.

I find people who advocate for renewable energy projects are almost always the same people who argue in favor of energy subsidies, too. Perhaps they know something about energy economics, the rest of us don't...

FilosofumRex··on The wake effect: As wind farms expand, some can ‘steal’ each others’ wind
Most climate change advocates naively believe that because an energy resource in renewable it must be infinite too. Simple energy balance over a given area will show how much extraction of wind energy will reduce available energy downstream.

Moreover, the economics of offshore wind farms is often commingled with state enterprises and various subsidy schemes, which makes them uneconomical even in the best of times, so a 2% capacity reduction coupled with inevitable maintenance and repair costs escalations might make many wind farms uneconomical.

Onshore wind farms are much more economical but the best locations such as Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico already have been developed.

FilosofumRex··on Quantum Computing and the Hidden Subgroup Problem
A crude explanation might be like this - if you look at graphs of sin and cos, you'd instantly recognize their symmetries, but what if you're given the graph of a linear combination of them, and asked to decipher the coefficients?

Naively, you'd evaluate the functions at every point by trial & error until they much the shape of the given graph. Or use the symmetry of sin & cos to combine them constructively and destructively (peaks and valley) and to match the given shape.

FT & QFT are "shortcuts" that help to decipher the correct combination of basis functions.

FilosofumRex··on Chomsky on what ChatGPT is good for (2023)
Linguistics has been largely subsumed by CS (LLM, speech synthesis, translation). It's not an empirical science or social science and most of its theories are not falsifiable.

But generally speaking Chomsky's ideas, and in particular, the Universal Grammar are no longer in vogue.

FilosofumRex··on Chomsky on what ChatGPT is good for (2023)
Language and intelligence are mostly orthogonal to each other and development of linguistic skills appeared very late in human evolutionary terms.

Babies and in particular Deaf babies understand and communicate significant amount of information w/o parsing sentences. Dogs don't parse human speech, they associate an emotion to the particular sound and body language exhibited to them, repeatedly.
