I think everyone just needs to get their government mind control, tracking device, sterilization vaccine so we can all move on with our lives... I'd like to be comfortable in a bar again.

You can wear a Faraday cage to block the mind control/tracking signals, adopt a baby and gene therapy your adopted babies into your bloodline with garage science CRISPR... We're all going to struggle with mass evictions, economic recessions, next breakthrough zoonotic, blah, blah, blah in less than 5 years.

Did previous generations have the same regulations in place that cause companies to restrict employment in crappy jobs to less than 40 hours a week so you need to move between job sites or work unsteady 'gig' jobs on the side? To avoid some mandatory benefits?

That certainly makes sense. The existence of organized crime does represent some failing of the state towards collapse.

Maybe something to do with a comparison to organized crime as a competition to a (possibly separately corrupt) government?

Can we get microwaves (or whatever atmosphere blindspot frequency) through dozens of kilometers of atmosphere without it diffusing/scattering or losing a bunch to absorption?

Would need very large ground target to absorb and convert to electricity and hope someone or some tech error doesn't change the coordinates. The standard cosmic ray/solar flare bitflipping or supervillain hacker.
