Fiahil··on Ask HN: Why do many CS graduates lack foundational knowledge?
I'm closing on my 50th interview since the start of the year, and 3/4 of them were junior SWE or internship positions.

I encountered the same lack of foundational computer science knowledge, but -here 's the twist- mostly from American students.

The best candidates I ever interviewed came from (in no particular order) : the Technical University of Munich, 42/Epita/Epitech, and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.

Fiahil··on Bee and butterfly numbers are falling, even in undisturbed forests
Yes ! However, Conifers are not part of that group, and therefore "less" affected.
Fiahil··on The EU's new Cyber Resilience Act is about to tell us how to code
Considering the pile of untested and mostly garbage devices and software produced by some companies, this is amazing !

For those who will not bother reading the article :

> I think having a CRA is long overdue, but I hope we can get to something that doesn’t further clamp down on innovation in Europe.

GDPR had the same warning label, and yet, today, it's wholeheartedly accepted as a great improvement over the previous status quo.

Fiahil··on Show HN: Ractor – a Rust-based actor framework with clusters and supervisors
Docker and kubernetes are here for that
Fiahil··on Putting solar panels in grazing fields is good for sheep
Let's try that with goats :)
Fiahil··on Show HN: We built a developer-first open-source Zapier alternative
For once, I'd love to have a nice UI around this so I don't need to search docs and write code for simple stuff like "await ctx.waitFor({ hours: 3 });".

That would improve discoverability as well !

Fiahil··on Ask HN: What to do with a coffee plantation with about 8000 trees?
> Say you need to fertilize the trees. When is the right time? What is the right amount? How many people do you need to fertilize 8000 trees in time?

You experiment. It takes a lot of time, yes, but it’s not that difficult.

I find your answer and many other here overly pessimistic and unkind. Not every thing is about hustling a business to perfection and on the first try.

Fiahil··on Marion Smith, the world’s most prolific cave explorer, dies at 80
A few years of training with experienced people is enough to get you in situations where you would be killed by mistake on your own.

A decade should be good enough to keep you alive most of the time.

Fiahil··on Every modeler is supposed to be a great Python programmer
Side-by-side coding with a backend engineer (web or other), is great !

Anything else involving practice is going to work as well :)

Fiahil··on Every modeler is supposed to be a great Python programmer
Yes, that’s expected of every scientist I am working with. The reason is quite simple and have little to do with Engineering work being more expensive than Scientific one (it’s actually the opposite): get a nice problem to solve or a great model to build, and very soon, you have an ivory tower completely disconnected from the original objective.

To be fair, I don’t ask scientists to understand concurrency issues in programming. Only the basic stuff that is required for delivering a functional program. Yes, Pandas and Scikit-learn belong to the basic stuff.

Fiahil··on When McKinsey comes to town
Note that BCG also have BCG X (recent fusion of Gamma, Digital Venture and Platinion), a Data Science and Software arm that could be compared with Palantir in size and breath and depth, but are not working with the CIA.

So, they also do some -high end- implementation work as well :)

Fiahil··on One of France's oldest butter producers makes 380 tons per year [video]
Ah ! I live within 20km of their factory. I would not have expected this on HN.

Their butter is, indeed, very good. I always get one of the first spring butter, when the cows get the fresh grass. Creamy and absolutely delicious !

Fiahil··on Mandatory helmet laws make cyclists less safe
that study comes out a lot, but, AFAIK was poorly challenged. It would be nice to get a second opinion on this topic before jumping to conclusions.
Fiahil··on Tell HN: I asked ChatGPT to build a login form in React and it gave me the code
Don't forget tests and documentation, which is something copilot is really good at and can really improve a codebase.
Fiahil··on CT scan shows there's still lots of toner left in an “empty” cartridge
My laser Brother printer let me print until there is no more ink.
Fiahil··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
From a French perspective, American cuisine is bland and unimpressive.

Clamping down on meat is not enough, you need to also get around cooking everything in oil, and added sugar (basically, everything about your cuisine).

> JVM is one of the most brilliant pieces of engineering in history.

Yet, such a pain in the ass…

Fiahil··on The truffle industry is a scam
I'm French and I live in France. Here, most of our truffles are real truffle.

We do get some Tuber aestivum as well, but that's alright because they're displayed as "truffe d'été". No harm done.

As the article said, the "truffle flavour" has nothing to do with the real stuff, and outside of France, Italy and Spain, you probably won't get them on the market. You might be lucky in some restaurants all over Europe. But everywhere else it's propably not the "real" black truffle. Especially, if they put some in ketchup...

Fiahil··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
> You can get out of the USB-C requirement by having only inductive charging

That's a nice loophole there :)

Anyway, it's not like USB-C isn't good enough and that they can't change the rules if/when a new connector get enough support. And to get enough support, it most likely means that it has to be compatible (in some way) with USB-C. That's a nice feature.

Fiahil··on India follows EU's example in requiring USB-C charging for smart devices
Inductive charging, don't be silly.
Fiahil··on Apple Rankings
So sad that it's missing so many niche varieties and their translation... Am I to assume it's always the case with American authors?
Fiahil··on Who needs MLflow when you have SQLite?
> I think MLFlow is a good idea (very) badly executed.

Oh yes, I'm glad to see other with similar opinion.

Fiahil··on Why are glasses so expensive? The industry prefers to keep that blurry (2019)
Yet, EL makes most of its revenue from North America. Europe-middle-east-africa is close behind :

NA : 9,87 B

EMEA : 7,95 B

AP : 2,54 B

LA : 1,13 B

Fiahil··on Ask HN: Is programming a “young person's game”?
> grind through tutorials until 3am

I'm not sure this is a valuable use of your time. It's not an option a young person will miss as they get older.

Fiahil··on How the US can stop wasting billions of dollars on each transit project
I think the US don't deserve high speed trains. This can be revisited in a few decades when the population becomes less hostile towards rails. (Cf this : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33502387)

Building a nerwork in Africa, however, is a great idea !

Fiahil··on EU Voice
> This is open source, not a company with billions to spend on UX: they do what they can.

This is not an excuse, all it takes to have a decent -or even a good UX- is one person asking the right questions and following up by interviewing a few folks during the sign up process.

It could be done in less than 2 hours or during a coffee break.

Getting the right experience and setting aside the time to do it is just business as usual for any product owner, even if they work during they free time.

Fiahil··on Rust 1.65.0
This is it ? This is the GAT release ? Should we celebrate now or wait a bit more ?
Fiahil··on Ask HN: Data Scientists, what libraries do you use for timeseries forecasting?
Don't forget "keeping the train data from leaking into the test data" and "having a way to reproduce the exact same model I trained last week". Those two are too often forgotten.
Fiahil··on Ask HN: Data Scientists, what libraries do you use for timeseries forecasting?
A Software Engineer. I'm just specialised a bit in DevOps, Data Engineering, and (beware buzzword) MLOps
