FeteCommuniste··on What's the future for pure math research in the age of AI?
I'm wondering how we are going to maintain a critical mass of people who understand frontier mathematics if in another five or ten years the only "mathematicians" truly working at the frontier anymore are AIs. Or maybe "understanding" at depth will become a thing of the past, superseded by broad-strokes grasp of results plus machine verification.
FeteCommuniste··on Writing code by hand is over, forever
I see the same thinking in AI-art boosterism: having "good ideas" is the important and "creative" part while actually implementing them is drudgery best delegated to someone (or something) else.
FeteCommuniste··on Writing code by hand is over, forever
Maybe writing essays by composing sentences yourself is also over forever.
FeteCommuniste··on Sites in ChatGPT
AI doesn't really make the process better or more reliable, it just speeds it up.

Like the old quip that a cup of coffee lets you do stupid things faster.

I'll have my bots talk to your bots. Maybe our bots can do lunch.
FeteCommuniste··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Probably, just like now where there are still small groups of hobbyist programmers who write in little-used languages for obscure old platforms hardly anyone else cares about. But I think it's perfectly fair to mourn the prospect of something that used to be both your passion and livelihood get pushed to some dusty niche corner of the tech landscape.
FeteCommuniste··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Exactly. Motivation is rarely a question of either/or (art for art's sake / art for recognition). And for many practitioners, being part of a community of fellow artists who "know the struggle" is also part of the fun.
FeteCommuniste··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
It's no more illegal than promising a tax cut for everyone if you're elected. What you can't do is promise money exclusively to the people who vote for you. That's bribery.

Something similar was happening with CIA promotion of abstract expressionism in art:

We will cure carpet. We will cure desk. We will cure lamp.
FeteCommuniste··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
Yeah, I snorted at the sentence "The exact words we choose when writing matter." Well, then why the heck are you using an LLM to "write," man?

The winner of a short-story prize from Granta (well known literary fiction publisher) is believed to be AI-written:

FeteCommuniste··on The brain may be about to have its Ozempic moment
Apparently it's used by about 10% of UK university students, according to a survey:

I remember there being kind of a burst of articles about it on HN about ten or fifteen years ago, with a lot of commenters talking about their use of it.

FeteCommuniste··on The brain may be about to have its Ozempic moment
Our "natural" impulse is to eat everything tasty within reach until we're full. That's not so healthy when the tasty stuff regularly includes foods like liter soft drinks, ice cream sandwiches, French fries, and so on. Our bodies didn't evolve with calorie-bombs constantly just a drive-thru trip away.

Checking out his Twitter feed first might have dampened some of that shock.

Neural minimalism, the newest health trend coming to a social network near you.

Even if I never needed to sleep again I would kind of miss dreaming. Maybe we could take another drug to make us dream.
FeteCommuniste··on How Claude marks AI-generated content
Why would you want AI content to be indistinguishible from human output?
FeteCommuniste··on How Claude marks AI-generated content
It saves the non-anglophones the bother of learning to write readable English, so there's that.
FeteCommuniste··on How Claude marks AI-generated content
"Perfect as far as human perception can tell" is a weaker standard than "bit-to-bit copy." Maybe it's that?
FeteCommuniste··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Ha, I used to do the same back in high school. Never know when a site's going to go down or change without warning.
FeteCommuniste··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
The only way to be immune is make ads and tracking impossible or at least not profitable enough for bigcorps to care about putting them there. So, maybe a web without Javascript, images, or videos, lol. Something truly primitive like the Gemini protocol.
FeteCommuniste··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
The brief era where the "social web" consisted of blogs and old-school chronological forums was pretty nice. I enjoyed it, anyway.
FeteCommuniste··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
It undermines the social incentive as well if potential creators assume that everyone else will be getting their content through AI. They won't be looking at my stuff, they'll be looking at some LLM's pre-chewed version of it.

"Ghost guns" exist, too, but we still try to prosecute reckless use of firearms to the extent possible.
