Ferrotin··on Applying to College, and Trying to Appear ‘Less Asian’
They could look at a picture of you.
Ferrotin··on U.S.A. gun death rates hit highest levels in decades
The perception of less law enforcement is what matters here, and is why rates increased all over.
Ferrotin··on Ask HN: Would you want to buy direct, fractional ownership of a solar farm?
If it’s a publicly traded company and the price is right.
Ferrotin··on Elon Musk issued another round of code review to layoff more unproductive SWE
Isn’t it strange how not getting to work at his company is how people suffer misery.
Ferrotin··on Making all your integers positive with zigzag encoding
Wouldn’t they use a plain bitmask instead, the lsb indicating negation, with 3 being the negation of 2? That’s zigzag encoding with a negative zero.
Ferrotin··on Google to lay off 10k “poor performers”
It should be obvious that many people who pass an interview, by intelligence or hard practice, will slack off on the job.
Ferrotin··on France says non to Office 365 and Google Workspace in school
Office 2021, or just don’t use computers in school.
Ferrotin··on Coinbase sheds 85% of its value this year so far
And 4. The price was too high given any reasonable projection in the first place.
Ferrotin··on I told my team to pause our $750K/month Twitter ads budget last week
> Performance fell significantly.

Did Twitter get rid of a bunch of bots? This is the fakest thing about this post.

Ferrotin··on Computer proof ‘blows up’ centuries-old fluid equations
No, atoms are why there aren’t perfect ideal fluids, and quantum effects have nothing to do with it.
Ferrotin··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
All could, and one of them passed through full employee replacement when it failed to raise a round of funding. They would have to suffer and hire good people, not miscellaneous cogs, but they would survive.
Ferrotin··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
If it’s a conceptually complex system then the devs weren’t really that good in the first place. Yeah, technical debt happens, but you can’t have both that the system had good technical leadership and it can’t possibly stay up under replacement employees. (My impression is that it will stay up.)
Ferrotin··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
The comment threads in them are a train wreck.
Ferrotin··on Demystifying financial leverage
That ratio tells you how much faster you make or lose money under an asset price movement. That is, if you’re 11:1 leveraged, a 0.01% increase in asset price is a 0.11% increase in your net equity.
Ferrotin··on Binance to acquire FTX
Do exchanges in real finance even have long term customer deposits?
Ferrotin··on Bloated College Administration Is Making Education Unaffordable
It would be useful for the reader, but the numbers and comparisons exist and do back the author up.
Ferrotin··on Ask HN: What piece of code/codebase blew your mind when you saw it?
That would just load each global variable into registers and write them back to memory, swapping them.

If the compiler had decided to put two locals located already in registers, and had the swap in a branch, like so:

    if (foo()) {
        bar();
        (a, b) = (b, a);
    }
Then the registers might get swapped with an xchg instruction or something, I don’t know. The compiler’s goal is to have pipelined execution be as fast as possible, so there’s no way it’s going to use bit-mangling operations that would get in the way of that.
Ferrotin··on Ask HN: What piece of code/codebase blew your mind when you saw it?
Generally speaking it will get compiled to something like SSA form and the outcome depends on the overall dataflow and what optimizations happen.
Ferrotin··on US Supreme Court poised to ban affirmative action in university admissions
They both admit more blacks and fewer Asians. I assume Jews are lumped in with other whites.
Ferrotin··on Telegram CEO accuses Apple of crushing entrepreneurs
No, that’s just a start. I don’t care about “fair” — there isn’t really such a concept at play here. The fact that Apple’s reaching through Telegram into the third parties using the communications platform is really lame. It’s not just a direct relationship between Apple and an app. It is recursively affecting how two people who aren’t Apple or Telegram are able to conduct themselves.
Ferrotin··on Telegram CEO accuses Apple of crushing entrepreneurs
No restrictions on what software people can run on their devices.
Ferrotin··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
So the whole “let’s not escalate to nuclear war” thing is what convinced you he didn’t want to save humanity.
Ferrotin··on Apple says iPhones will switch to USB-C chargers to comply with new EU law
Yes, it does do that.
Ferrotin··on Apple says iPhones will switch to USB-C chargers to comply with new EU law
You’re already free to buy a phone with those features, without worrying about extra chargers.
Ferrotin··on PayPal restores to its TOS $2,500 charge for any post they don't like
Or suppose you have a t-shirt printing business.
Ferrotin··on SiriSpy – iOS bug allowed apps to eavesdrop on your conversations with Siri
Oh my. Thanks.
Ferrotin··on SiriSpy – iOS bug allowed apps to eavesdrop on your conversations with Siri
Do you mean to say that “slide to power off” leaves Wi-Fi radios active?
Ferrotin··on PayPal restores to its TOS $2,500 charge for any post they don't like
It is right there in the second link:

> (f) the promotion of hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory

Ferrotin··on Anti-Xi protest spreads in China, worldwide as Chinese leader begins third term
When they put that private property declaration in there, they still had a one-child policy, which they ended for practical, not ideological reasons. That is a more potent instantiation of communism than economic policy or property rights.
Ferrotin··on Anti-Xi protest spreads in China, worldwide as Chinese leader begins third term
It’s amazing how people are stumbling to answer and fail to identify its main problem: they’re communist.
