Fergusonb··on DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B Surpasses GPT-4o in certain benchmarks
These benchmarks have even the small models absolutely demolishing Sonnet-3.5, which doesn't reflect my subjective experience.

It still seems to me that these models are 'dumb' and often don't understand what I'm asking, where claude's intuition is much stronger.

I feel r1 14b even feels weaker than qwen 2.5 14b

Primary use-case is web technology / coding. Maybe I'm prompting it incorrectly?

Fergusonb··on Ask HN: Does anyone use sound effects in their dev environment?
I love this idea.

YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYTHONS

Fergusonb··on Why Copilot Is Making Programmers Worse at Programming
While this raises valid concerns, Copilot and friends can actually enhance learning by exposing devs to new patterns and approaches. They still require problem-solving and critical evaluation skills. By handling routine tasks, they free up time for higher-level thinking.

It's just another abstraction layer, like high-level languages were. Responsible use combined with continuous learning can boost productivity without sacrificing knowledge.

The impact differs between experienced devs and beginners. As these tools evolve, we'll likely develop new meta-skills around AI collaboration. Like any tool, it's about how we use it.

Fergusonb··on Ask HN: Can we have an AI-free day of the week?
Just create a userscript that removes posts with common AI keywords from your feed.

Or have AI do it...

Fergusonb··on Minecraft Wiki has decided to leave Fandom
It's also available via the osrs.wiki URL. Also, it's the highest quality wiki I've ever encountered.
Fergusonb··on So let’s talk about this Wayland thing
There's ydotool, but as far as I tested with it, the only movements that work are relative movements. You can't tell it to a click a specific x/y because it will fumble badly (Nobara / Fedora 38 )
Fergusonb··on US smartphone shipments fall sharply, but Android more than iPhone
This has been a huge problem in my social circles.

I really like my current android device, but my wife and our friends have iphones and we are all constantly inconvenienced by the messaging and other poor sharing options between platforms.

They share things without having to think about it, and I have to come up with solutions that are acceptable to them.

Between this issue and the differences in performance in the last few years, it has me thinking of moving back to team blue after 10+ years on green.

Fergusonb··on LLaMA2 Chat 70B outperformed ChatGPT
Anecdotal evidence here - I find that the API is less likely to ask questions about what you are doing and get straight to the answer.

For example, if I were to ask how to do something with burp it will just answer instead of going into the "as an AI" monologue.

Fergusonb··on Vivaldi on Android bypasses restrictions to let users access Bing Chat
I have an addon that allows me to use it in Firefox. It's called 'Bing Chat for All Browsers'

To be fair to Microsoft, it is a little broken in Firefox - but at least I'm able to use it now.

Fergusonb··on A SvelteKit template for building CMS-free editable websites
It really is - writing a svelte component feels like writing something in vanilla html/js/css, but you get all the advantages that come with a framework.
Fergusonb··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
I created a program that allows me to control the max charge level of my laptop battery on linux, and persists the change through reboot. Written in rust, and I use it several times per week.

I designed it for my system, but it should work on any linux system with a battery, kernel version 5.4+, and systemd.

Fergusonb··on Human brain compresses working memories into low-res ‘summaries’
Anyone know a good compression algorithm? Mine seems to be incredibly lossy.
Fergusonb··on Windows 11 Pro will soon require a Microsoft Account during initial setup
A lot of the replies here are recommending Ubuntu - I'm going to recommend PopOS. It's built on top of Ubuntu, but comes with a newer kernel (better new hardware compatibility), graphics drivers, and some sensible defaults.

Some optimizations for laptops with graphics switching is great too.

Fergusonb··on Ask HN: Where are you getting your money's worth?
I like these.

I use a no-name vps provider that offered a deal for 3core, 2G mem, 40G ssd kvm for 23/year. Could up-in-smoke any time but I've enjoyed it for the last 1.5 years. I usually look for deals on LEB.

Minecraft as well; some of my college buddies and I do a book club and meet up on minecraft since we don't live nearby each-other anymore. 10 years of entertainment for maybe $30.

Fergusonb··on The Birth and Death of JavaScript (2014) [video]
Javascript is still popular today even if you ignore the browser. Node is all over the place.
Fergusonb··on Electron vs. Qt for a new open-source project? Looking for advice
Maybe look at tauri?

You can write the cli in rust and the gui in html js css

Binary will probably end up around 6MB

Fergusonb··on How M1 Macs feel faster than Intel models: it’s about QoS
Thank you for the perspective.

Here's r7 4800HS (35w) on linux:

Fergusonb··on Stadia’s VP and head of product leaves Google
I feel their strategy makes a lot of sense if each project is treated like a startup. Release the mvp, iterate quickly, shut it down if it isn't working...

The problem is they attach the Google name for clout and then proceed to drag that name through the mud when they stop support.

Google's name now isn't worth much to me if I'm considering an experimental product.

They should not use the Google moniker unless they are willing to provide long term support.

Fergusonb··on Natto.dev – A Canvas for JavaScript
Wow, this is a really cool project.

I'd really like to see something like this in browser developer tools someday.

Fergusonb··on Latest Mozilla VPN features
If you're using mullvad you have likely already done a lot of research on which provider you want to use.

A lot of consumers are interested in a quality VPN but wouldn't do this kind of research.

Mozilla provide additional eyeballs and billing support, and mullvad provides the service itself. It's a mutually beneficial transaction.

They're not in competition for your money, they're targeting different demographics.

Fergusonb··on Pangolin – Mobile AMD laptop with Ryzen CPU and Radeon graphics
You won't be able to change the brightness or use the keyboard shortcuts by default, but it's pretty easy to use mainline to get the latest kernel which will support those features.

This would also work for Ubuntu.

Fergusonb··on Pangolin – Mobile AMD laptop with Ryzen CPU and Radeon graphics
I can't speak to the 4700u or the pangolin specifically, but I can offer this perspective on PopOS/AMD:

I've been using System76's PopOS with my Asus Zephyrus G14 (4800hs) as a daily driver and I really like it. (freelance/web)

The battery life is comparable to Windows (on integrated graphics mode, it has graphics switching available)at 7-10 hours with 70% brightness and balanced power settings using VScode and firefox.

The g14 has a 75wh battery vs the pangolin's 49wh, so I would expect less battery life from the pangolin despite the 4700u having a lower default tdp, since the 4800hs likes to sit at around 6-10 watts when doing non-intensive tasks anyway.

In 2021 I'm not missing any major programs. It's pretty incredible how much is cross-platform now.
