Felger··on uBlock Origin review
From a French tech that deployed UO for quite a long time on hundred of computers, and stopped since a year or two :

UO started blocking or makes a lot of widely used french websites, hosters and services unusable since one or two year. Thus generating lots of requests and taking lots of time. Common webmail functions from french ISP and public services are impacted.

Had sadly to switch back to ABP.

Felger··on How to Boost Self Esteem and Stop Procrastinating
Anyone here who believe they now belong to the dreaded "no room for growth" segment ? And why ?

In my case, I know it the hard way, because I drop from burnout for serveral months after starting and preferably completing such major projects. Since a few of them over the course of two decades, I feel I can't reach such an intense commitment state anymore. And haven't.

Felger··on The average consumer loses over $150 a year renting a router from their ISP
In France, a router is rented about 3€ ($4) per month by the majors ISPs (the renting cost is not shown idependently by two of the three major ISPs. Orange explicitly shows its renting cost on bills.

That's cheap for a broadband router-modem-WiFi AC-2 channel voice box. They are all customized broadcom boards.

Using another router is technically very hard for anything other than the IP data : Orange for example uses ATM QoS with specific DHCP WAN string initialization options, specific SIP channel setup and even worse for IPTV VLAN. The SIP channel sold is almost impossible to use with a third party SIP client device.

Let's add they won't lift a finger in case of an issue if you use your own router.

To sum it up : not worth the trouble !

Felger··on New iPhone SE
I'm still using a A3 2016 with android 8 (4.7" amoled, good battery, audio jack and wow, a type-C USB connector), I would smply like the same one with a refreshed CPU/RAM/eMMC.
Felger··on Western Digital admits 2TB-6TB WD Red NAS drives use shingled magnetic recording
A mixed set of PMR drives ready for 24/24 usage. And f*cking reliable, frequent backups.

Customers here often mistake redondancy for backups. Had to save a 8 years-work worth excel file on a failed Kingston USB key today.

I've been selling and doing DR on HDD for 20 years now, and frankly speaking, Seagate drives reliability isn't the best.

Numerous new technologies led to severe issues like : 5400.6/7200.4 platter dust issues killing heads the more they heat, the infamous LBA 0 fw issue on desktop drives, motor bearing seizure on 7200.10/12, lots of bad batchs on 7200.14 ST DM001/002/003, more than WD or even Hitachi. On SAS drives, the Cheetah 15K.x are not very reliable (replaced LOTS of ST3600057SS), but the Fujitsu and Hitachi are not very either.

Toshiba drives are not great either. The 2.5" MK series had an important return rate, more than the competitors. The MQ01ABD is better, but faces platters demagnetization that leads to bad sectors. The 3.5" ACA drives are a Hitachi prod line that was "given" to Toshiba when WD acquired HGST. They are quite basically Hitachi drives with a Toshiba firmware.

Edit : and now DR on Seagate drives like the Rosewood family (like the ST1000LM035) is the absolute worst nighmare for any data recovery guy. Ultra brittle head stack, easy platter damage when shocked, self encrypted firmware and SMR. If those disks makes some motor noise or head clicking, we don't even bother to open them anymore.

Seeing how brittle the SMR Seagate drives are (especially the rosewood family), I'm a little bit concerned.
Felger··on Magnesium and major depression (2011)
Hello French "brother"

Serum levels of vit D and Magnesium are not reliable indicators. As stated in the study for Magnesium. For Vit D, efficiency of a supplementation of Vit D3 is also not on par with real sun exposure, the skin and subcutaneous fat don't seems to respond the same way.

I sadly did not had any improvement on my side from getting my Vit D level from 15 (which is barely above the deficiency level) to a whooping level of 60 in a few month with Bio-D-Mulsion drops (Vit D3). My mag must be high as I eat a very rich diet in this nutrient, without any dairy from more than a decade now

Been a freelancer since 2003, working from home, introvert living alone, not affected by loneliness. Darn, I must not like people !

Will try the shoes trick.

Felger··on Whole-body cryotherapy as adjunct treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders
Good question. Was it ever tested so far ? I believe not.

My guess is that it is near as efficient as a cold shower. So you can go for Wim Hof method. It costs almost nothing comparatively.

As far as I am concerned, being hit with mild anxiety for more than 10 years, WBCT (3 minutes in a giant fridge cooled at -113° C) which I tried for 10 sessions didn't improve my symptoms. My physical recovery was a bit better.

Almost the same situation here.
