FatherOfCurses··on Accidental Aesthetics and Romance of Power Wires
The Barenaked Ladies have a song that mentions power lines in a somewhat romantic way: https://genius.com/6365258

In the neighborhood where I grew up, there were transmission towers that went through about 200 meters away from my house. During the winter when we got freezing rain I could hear them crackle slightly. All the other infrastructure was buried, the transmission towers were the only overhead lines.

FatherOfCurses··on Show HN: Corporate Mind Games – logic puzzles with a sarcastic corporate theme
One of these games involves assembling the perfect office layout for a RTO. A friend of mine works for a major corporation that recently enacted a 100% RTO mandate.

I used to work there too, and knowing what I know about their operations, I am willing to bet that probably 75% of the workforce in their offices are going to spend 100% of official work time on Zoom calls. They own offices all across the company and operate on the principal that every corporate office gets a piece of every corporate operation, so almost every team has only one or two members in the same physical location.

RTO's are almost always soft layoffs nowadays, so it will be interesting to see if the RTO achieves the desired effect or if they still have to reduce headcount in the future. Right now all they're doing is introducing their water, power, and auxilliary staffing costs without any corresponding increase in productivity.

FatherOfCurses··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
I can't believe we've normalized taking insulin as a society. There are better ways than drugs to fix your Type 2 diabetes.
FatherOfCurses··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
I am as critical of Big Pharma as anyone else, but you can't seriously imply that our society places a certain amount of social stigma on people who take medication for mental illness. Some US insurance companies make it more difficult to get medication for mental illness because they often argue against the need for the medication.

"Happy pills?" Are you kidding me? Are you anti-vax as well?
FatherOfCurses··on Debugging my new network, when 10 Gigabit Ethernet Runs at 300 Megabits
Is there a similar diagnostic that can be run on a Playstation 5? I generally have good download speeds on my network but it seems to take forever to install games on my PS5.
FatherOfCurses··on Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac: The future of supercars is combustion engines
I don't have a link but I recall that someone did a study that revealed that there was no safety improvement from loud exhaust and the only way to improve motorcycle safety was increasing visibility with high-visibility vests.

In my state there are no helmet laws so I always find it amusing that the "loud pipes save lives" crew are the same who wear no helmets or any other protective gear.

FatherOfCurses··on “It works better in the app”
UHaul is the only app I've ever encountered that is less efficient than talking to a human being behind a counter. I have tried multiple times to pick up a reservation via the app and it has taken so long or failed at some point that I had to walk into the store anyway.

And it wants a photo of my license EVERY GODDAMN TIME. And no I can't store a photo of my license on my phone and just upload it - it has to take a photo directly. And boy does it not like to take photos in bright sunlight. You know, when I'm outside in a parking lot beside a white truck.

FatherOfCurses··on I think the data center backlash is mostly about data centers
People are against progress when they don't see a clear benefit to themselves. Medical progress, for example, is often widely embraced.

The thing about data centers is that some are being built in this gold rush manner and people can't see the through line to how they will benefit from them. Data center infrastructure companies are making deals with town councils in rural areas that include restrictive NDA's so the voters can't inspect what the deal involves. Combine this with AI fatigue where every time you use a website or app and some new AI feature is being pushed on you and a lot of people just feel like completely overwhelmed by the situation.

If the data center companies were smart, they would be open and cooperative with the communities they are trying to build in. But they are impatient and think they can just throw more money at the problem and shove it down the community's throat.

FatherOfCurses··on Stalking the Wily Hacker: 40 years later – Cliff Stoll [video]
The PBS Nova episode about Stoll was the literal starting point of my discovery of the internet.

Because of the show, my next year in university I signed up for an elective CompSci course (I was an English Literature major) about threat assessment. Part of our course involved browsing the RISKS Forum newsgroup on the Sparc Stations at the University of Toronto Engineering Annex.

That episode was also the beginning of my fascination with telecom equipment, which I got the chance to use professionally for about a year in 1998-1999. There's a telephone museum about an hour from where I live that still has a working mechanical switch that you can dial on and see it working.

FatherOfCurses··on Government Proposes New Six-Figure Fee for H1B Visas
In other words, companies who rely on H1B visas are not donating enough to Trump 2028 or the Republican party.
FatherOfCurses··on The oldest bar in every state
Re: Callahagn's in Mobile, AL starting as a "members only" club.

To quote Gene Hackman in "Mississippi Burning" - "Member of what?"

FatherOfCurses··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
In moderation, yes. But the article is describing a three-day diet of only sardines and black coffee or tea. I like the occasional sardine (Thank you Alton Brown) but three days of nothing else is a little out there.
FatherOfCurses··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
Amazing the number of people on HN who will simp for Jeff Bezos.
FatherOfCurses··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
Equating Amazon with a general home construction contractor is quite a stretch.
FatherOfCurses··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
Are you saying that there is a lack of easily accessible information about how Amazon drivers are overworked compared to UPS/Fedex drivers?
FatherOfCurses··on Lawmaker Who Wants Data Center Pause Wins Kansas Democratic Primary
You are severely misinformed if you think that data center opposition is on the same level as NIMBYism.
FatherOfCurses··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
In a jury system, the judge provides instructions to the jury about how they are supposed to weigh the evidence presented against the requirements of the law. They don't need to be technical experts. The theoretical idea of "a jury of one's peers" (while not perfect) is making a fresh decision based on the merits of the singular case, rather than a judge deciding based on prejudices they've built up over hundreds of previous cases.
FatherOfCurses··on Jellyfin founder Andrew leaves team
I'm sorry that you have had a bad experience.

I have been running Jellyfin in a container on a Linux server for three years now. I am streaming video to Infuse on three Apple TV boxes and music to a Kodi installation on a Raspberry Pi with no issues.

FatherOfCurses··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
They can't park for shit either, so you lose spots in a parking lot and have to wait forever while they block the aisle backing out.
FatherOfCurses··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
So much of American car/motorcycle culture seems to be about that nowadays. And it's not limited to the Japanese mod scene, either.

Loud exhausts everywhere - pickups, domestic V6/V8's, motorcycles.

Super-bright headlights/aux lights improperly mounted or operated, blinding you at night.

Stereos you can almost feel before you hear them.

All these guys (and let's face it, it's 90% guys doing the irritating stuff) are being sold a dream by the mod manufacturers that if they just install this $1500 catback or this $1000 sub they will finally get the respect they deserve.

They get online forum/Facebook/Insta/TikTok validation but very few people around them are impressed with their choices.

I mainly hate how people are being taken for a ride (pardon the pun) by marketers and putting money into things that aren't really going to improve their car-driving experience.

FatherOfCurses··on Data Centers Are Quietly Taking over Texas. The Pollution Could Be Catastrophic
What about the water consumption?
FatherOfCurses··on Farage left fighting a trash can as the UK populist's election gamble backfires
Amazing that the constituents are forced to choose between a talentless novelty candidate and Count Binface.
FatherOfCurses··on Just Pay the Subscription
Every other business has figured out a way to operate on a single transaction model where I give them money and they give me a product and that is the end of our relationship until I need something else that they make. Somehow we have managed to operate in this manner for hundreds of years. Why is software development any different?
FatherOfCurses··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
And yet so much of the spending goes to big ticket items benefitting defense contractors while things that actually benefit the soldiers (better armor, better VA hospitals) go by the wayside.
FatherOfCurses··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
$3 is still too much and I would rather it go towards paying the debt down.
FatherOfCurses··on John Deere owners will get the right to repair equipment under FTC settlement
Everyone should be as angry as him, then companies wouldn't keep screwing us over.
FatherOfCurses··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
I wouldn't be concerned about damage to the aircraft, I would be worried about whether it messed with the avionics.
FatherOfCurses··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
IDK what has been going on but people in my area seem to be getting their hands on professional-level fireworks that sound like bombs going off. It used to be the roman candles and the fountains and a gentle background noise around the neighborhood but now it's insane.

There are plenty of parts of the world where people are free to enjoy themselves but also considerate of others.

FatherOfCurses··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
Yeah first 4th of July as a dog owner. He did relatively OK inside but we had a hell of a time taking him out for a walk. Every time we thought everyone was done blowing their loads someone else refueled and things started over again.
