Factorium··on An update of 455 new words
Seems like they got confused with pressure cookers. Maybe because Instant Pot now makes air fryers.
Factorium··on An update of 455 new words
Merriam Webster are agents of the elite and these 'COVID terms' have been added to legitimize the tools of our oppressors. Now, they will be with us forever.

This dictionary will show you 'Vaccine Passport', but not 'Nuremberg Code':

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nuremberg%20code

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuremberg_Code

Factorium··on Zuckerberg wants to be the hero of the metaverse because Facebook is boring
Correct. Force them to divest Instagram and Whatsapp, and prevent them from acquiring any more companies. Problem solved.
Factorium··on U.S. government owes over $100M for TSA's patent infringement
We can do what Israel does, and assign a risk rating to everyone entering the airport:

https://www.businessinsider.com/israels-ben-gurion-airport-s...

However, this system basically automatically applies increased risk to certain nationalities and cultures.

Are we willing to trade political correctness for a better security system?

Factorium··on Why are our brains shrinking?
This is already playing out at a global level:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S01602...

"There were strong negative correlations found between national IQ and three national indicators of fertility."

I think we should look on with worry that there are people with smaller brains that we are now giving unlimited resources to (food, technology, medicine), via aid and welfare programs. The dysgenic potential is immense.

Factorium··on Can confirm. San Francisco makes it all but impossible to build. (Twitter)
Chinese new buildings are terrible to live in. Its totally reasonable for the USA to require decent quality.
Factorium··on Earn.com will ruin email if it succeeds (2018)
So why not regulate US carriers to block those calls? Or to make it more difficult to obtain the US VOIP number in the first place?
Factorium··on Starship is still not understood
Can we just build private space, lunar, and martian colonies? They could be financed by Tesla shareholders.

The colonisation of the world by Europeans started with government investment, but eventually became self-sustaining.

If these offworld colonies are free of political correctness, crime, taxes, welfare systems, and disease, and contain only beautiful, healthy, and intelligent people (via careful selection, including genetic screening and IQ tests, of permitted colonists), they could draw the best of humanity to them.

Factorium··on Earn.com will ruin email if it succeeds (2018)
Australia has mostly solved spam phone calls with a 'Do Not Call' register:

https://www.donotcall.gov.au/consumers/register-your-numbers....

I can see the USA has the same thing: https://www.donotcall.gov/

Does it not work?

Factorium··on An unexpected victory: container stacking at the port of Los Angeles
Its currently taking too long to load those containers back. Its cheaper to just dock, unload, sail off.

Short-term optimisation.

Factorium··on Computer-1 mini-ITX Chassis
If you want a good mini-ITX case, just buy a Node 202. You can use it horizontally and put your monitor on top of it.

Buy power-efficient components and load it with the thickest and biggest Noctua PWM fans possible, and set the fan curves low, and its basically totally silent.

Factorium··on The main thing about Phenylacetone meth is that there's so much of it
From a societal POV, we need a Government-regulated drug harder than Alcohol or Tobacco. Similar in function to Soma. Maybe marijuana can fit the bill.

It doesn't make sense to 'outsource' production of narcotics to antagonistic nations or criminal enterprises.

Factorium··on The Amish have negotiated a pact with modernity (2018)
The Amish are typically eligible for a lot of welfare programs, due to their low income. However, they also reject Government support as part of their ethos.

Whilst the Amish are reliant on the rest of society's laws and defenses, there are other ethnocultural groups within the USA that are reliant on the rest of society for their housing and food supply. That's a lot further down the hierarchy of needs.

Factorium··on Stripe is kick-starting market for carbon removal
The best way to spend money on carbon removal is to lobby politicians to initiate carbon taxes, or at least to place tariffs on nations without them.

We cannot physically replicate the Azolla Event or the Carboniferous Period. There's no better form of carbon storage than coal, gas, oil. And it needs to just stay in the ground.

Otherwise I guess if we're looking at terraforming, we should consider iron fertilization.

Factorium··on Alphabet Third Quarter 2021 Results [pdf]
Lockdowns and money printing are great for business. No wonder Google is deplatforming scientists and engaging in mass censorship.
Factorium··on Geothermal's path to relevance: cheap drilling
Are ground-source heatpumps considered 'geothermal'?

Its much less sexy than a giant plant connected to a magma stream, but if we made these routine for all new suburban constructions, alongside passivhaus standards, we could eliminate residential fossil fuel connections for huge sections of the Western world.

Like another commenter mentioned, we could even have communal systems for individual streets, drilled beneath roads, to service townhouses and apartment blocks.

You can run the ground-source for heating and cooling, alongside a single wall-mounted air conditioner for dehumidification in the summer.

Factorium··on I’ve been reading a whole lot about tomatoes
My take is that it makes sense to grow the water-heavy vegetables yourself. These vegetables seem to be the most prone to damage during transport anyway. Plus, you can select heirloom varieties.

Then just get your staples (grains, potatoes, dairy products), plus fruits which require specialised agriculture, via the commercial food system.

If I had a house, instead of an apartment, I'd test the soil and then replace most of the backyard plants with good-looking and low-maintenance food producers; and replace the front lawn with pollinator-attracting xeriscape and maybe some herbs.

Factorium··on I’ve been reading a whole lot about tomatoes
Tomatoes "have no significant nutrient content" according to Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato#Nutrition

And are 95% water.

They just taste great due to the umami flavour.

Is there any way to grow nutritious food that isn't just transporting water everywhere?

https://tools.myfooddata.com/nutrient-ranking-tool/Water/Veg...

I guess this is the end result of selecting for 'yield' which is basically just weight...

Factorium··on Android 12's design is offensive to the user
Ugly design and lots of bugs. This has been a problem with Android for a long time. HTC (remember them!?) used to make a business out of fixing those problems - with the side-effect of just fragmenting the OS.

Bought a second-hand iPhone 6S in 2016 and never looked back.

Factorium··on Deadly infection linked to contaminated room spray sold at Walmart
Buy a CO2 + PM2.5 detector. They're fairly cheap on Aliexpress (~$70). You might just need to ventilate more often.
Factorium··on Something special is happening in Barcelona
Spain has one of the lowest fertility rates in Europe, 1.24 children per woman:

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.DYN.TFRT.IN?location...

Small apartments, no cars, high taxes to fund a generous welfare and pension system just results in society eating itself.

We should be looking at what's going on in Spain generally as a failure. Without cars, these cities are giant glorified dormitories.

This bike thing is cute, but the reality is that several sections of the city will be shut down for 10s of minutes during morning peak hour, and the chance of a kid getting lost is fairly high. Several kids just walking together in a dedicated bike lane would be easier to control.

Factorium··on Long Beach has temporarily suspended container stacking limitations
I think 'we' (as in high-intelligence individual technical people) need to be more vocal on social media. Look at the effect that small vocal minorities have on politicians and the media...

The problem is that technical people are usually too busy working or raising a family to frequent those channels. Unemployed or childless activists however have plenty of time for their causes. The 'vocal minority'.

Factorium··on Many Russians won’t get vaccinated against Covid-19. A dog catcher explains why
Moral hazard: an improved vaccine will reduce future business (more booster shots). There is absolutely no incentive for big pharma to make better vaccines.

Long-lasting protection from antibodies is irrelevant because political authorities are already ignoring natural immunity.

The booster shot isn't the problem per se, its that anyone who doesn't take them will be segregated from society due to vaccine mandates.

Factorium··on Google sought fellow tech giants' help in stalling kids' privacy protections
Requiring payment for access would also work. Maybe $10 for a lifetime membership, otherwise its read-only.

Children can only participate with these companies because the product is 'free'. Same with p*rn and free2play games: eliminate the 'free' component to effectively block them from children (at least without parental consent).

Factorium··on Many Russians won’t get vaccinated against Covid-19. A dog catcher explains why
If you get vaccinated now, you're effectively consenting to 6-monthly booster shots for life:

Factorium··on Science of Slow Cooking
An induction cooktop and electric pressure cooker certainly makes a gas connection for the kitchen unnecessary.

There's an interesting video from Adam Rageusa on how bad gas cooktops are:

https://youtu.be/CcAJ3_-Hou8

I think that gas cooktops and open-air cooking vessels are just used frequently because they're easy to show off on cooking shows... Its hard to make a Youtube video on things cooking in a sealed pressure cooker.

Factorium··on U.S. Issued $100B in Export Licenses to Suppliers of Huawei, SMIC
Huawei paid Democrats $500,000 to release their CFO:

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/21/huawei-paid-tony-podesta-500...

I am Ukrainian. It is clear to me that parts of the US Government (and a specific political party) are openly corrupt, at the highest level. I really hope that Americans can deal with this - the nation needs to serve as a reference point for the rest of the planet.

Factorium··on Science of Slow Cooking
If you're cooking bachelor chow, an electric pressure cooker is the superior method of cooking to anything else.

I used to eat out about 80% of the time, at huge expense, but since buying a pressure cooker its 5%...

There are plenty of recipes where you just throw in the ingredients, add a specific amount of water, set a specific time, and come back in 20minutes to a perfectly cooked meal. Its far less hassle than cooking with a pan etc, and uses less energy and water.

Smaller items like hard-boiled eggs take about 5 minutes in total.

You're also not venting cooking fumes and steam (and combusted natural gas) into your kitchen, so air quality, mold etc. is much improved.

Factorium··on Fed to ban policymakers from owning individual stocks
It will increase the pool of individuals competing for the job, and even encourage new political parties.

In fact, that might be the reason that politicians are paid so poorly now: they can just be drawn from the pool of political insiders and parachuted into districts.

Like another poster said, political term limits of 10 years in combination with this seems reasonable.

Factorium··on Oil System Collapsing So Fast It May Derail Renewables
We don't have the global resources or time to support mass industrialisation of Africa (1 billion people projected to go to 4 billion by 2100).

Its unclear if that's even possible given that some of these societies face serious issues in terms of equality for women, value of education, fair application of law, systematic corruption and tribalism, etc. Many of these problems are imbued in the religious/cultural bedrock of those places.

Look at what has happened in Afghanistan where after 20 years of Western intervention, the country has reset to its 'default' almost overnight.

We should view the level of development in Europe, NA, East Asia as the exception to the human condition, not the norm.

We need to just skip to the end game: education for women, contraception, abortion, incentives for having zero/one child, no food aid.
