Eyght··on Unboxing a 5G Protection Device
On the subject of placebo technology. How well do HN think placebo software would work?

An example would be a productivity app that only has a flip switch for High or Low productivity. Whenever you need to be extra productive, just open the app and set it to High.

Eyght··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
Looks like the hackers might've gained access to an internal admin panel. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23853786
Eyght··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
That's a bit extreme, but maybe a moderator level account that could moderate tweets and accounts.
Eyght··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
There are quite a lot of trading bots that base their trades off high impact twitter accounts. I wonder how they would've reacted to this.
Eyght··on Favorite Problems: A Practical Framework for Discovering Your Purpose
Sorry for the slow response. A few days have gone by, but your reply still demands a response I feel.

I was vague about helping others on purpose because experience has made me wary of claiming that I know what's good or moral. Fundamentally I would only claim to know better than evolution in two cases: 1) Jeopardizing the ecosystem/biosphere (because it would be suicide). 2) The need to get off this planet before it gets eaten by the sun (because I don't think evolution properly accounts for this). That's not to say that I claim to be amoral. Rather, in the name of humility, I'd stop at the definition: Being productive in a responsible way - guided by the two points above. My reason for this is that, in my experience, the worst consequences of human behaviour stem mostly from indifference, whatever the intention may be. And the promise of having a positive impact often makes people as blind to terrible consequences as the opportunism often associated with selfish behaviour. So I tend to limit how I express myself in this regard, because I think it's more honest.

Eyght··on How do unschoolers turn out? (2014)
For the first seven years of my schooling, I had the privilege of going to classes with only 8 pupils per teacher. During this time I felt like I had a personal relationship with each of the teachers, and that my schooling was a mutual effort. From the 8th year onwards, I went to schools where we were at least 30 pupils per teacher. During this time, dealing with teachers was more like dealing with a 'school official' rather than a person, and my schooling had turned into a number of abstract criteria contained in a standardized form.

Ironically, I've had a much better experience at university, where courses often has had more than a hundred students and only one professor to manage it all.

Eyght··on Favorite Problems: A Practical Framework for Discovering Your Purpose
I think that my purpose as a human is to work for my species both by helping others do their thing, and by giving it flavour by adding my own individual expression to the mix.

This article seems to be a guide on how to find focus and how to direct that focus to the most meaningful and productive activities that you can find in your life.

Eyght··on Sweden: higher Covid-19 death rate while failing to collect on economic gains
I work in e-commerce in Sweden and so far we're looking at 100%+ growth numbers for this year. It's crazy. I expect it to slow down towards the end of the year, but so far it's been crazy.
Eyght··on Thrones Wreathed in Shadow: Tacitus and the psychology of authoritarianism
I think Tacitus' most useful lesson for american politics right now would be the importance of political compromise. When political polarization reach the kind of levels it's at in the US right now, politicians tend to sacrifice the well-being of the country to hurt their political opponents - which is bad for everyone.
Eyght··on What I learned from writing for The Onion for a month (2015)
Meanwhile Mitch Hedberg was convincing himself that his joke wasn't funny if the pen was too far away.
Eyght··on Gravity Is Not Like the Other Forces
This is the same conclusion I've come to, in basically the same way. It's great to see that I'm not alone in thinking along these lines.

There ought to be a physicist that has walked down this path already. I'd be very interested in reading about their findings.

Eyght··on Black hole paradoxes reveal a fundamental link between energy and order

Eyght··on “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” turns 42
The contemporary resurgence of populism in politics feels a lot like the description of democracy in the "Wrong lizard won"-passage. You can read it here: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/162557-it-comes-from-a-very...
Eyght··on How the stress of fight or flight turns hair white
I wish my hair had gone grey instead of retreating from my head at 21.
Eyght··on Real 3D or Fake 3D
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stood out (hah) as a good 3D movie to me, and I've seen some of the real 3D ones.
Eyght··on 88% of Americans use a second screen while watching TV
People watching a twitch.tv stream on their tv would have the livechat on their phone/tablet. Seeing the people in the chat react can make even the dullest stream fun.
Eyght··on FBI Records: The Vault – Nikola Tesla
His assessment in the Tesla report:

"As a result of this examination, it is my considered opinion that there exist among Dr. Tesla's papers and possessions no scientific notes, descriptions of hitherto unrevealed methods of devices, or actual apparatus which could be of significant value to this country or which would constitute a hazard in unfriendly hands. I can therefore see no technical or military reason why further custody of the property should be retained."

Eyght··on Booking.com agrees to EU demands to change travel offers
I'd say a major factor is the removal of the human factor when conducting business. Automation makes it possible to push a large part of the responsibility to the customer. Just imagine standing in front of a person in a travel agency saying the same things to you as the booking.com website says; "I can offer you a discount because you're such a valuable customer to us, but you need to book within 2 minutes or I'll remove the discount!".
Eyght··on Symantec Is Now NortonLifeLock
If I didn't know anything about Norton, I'd expect NortonLifeLock to be a company that sells electronic tagging ankle bracelets and such.
Eyght··on Re-writing the site of Norway's largest transport provider in Elm
In Sweden, many sites have made use of the .nu domain ('nu' means 'now' in swedish) which has led to a lot of short domain names.
Eyght··on What Makes People Do What They Do? (2013)
In my admittedly limited experience working sales, a personal relationship is incredibly important for customer retention. I guess the same goes for employees.
Eyght··on Sauropod Neck Posture
The horizontal posture seems favourable for Sauropod racing.
Eyght··on Ask HN: What are some of your recent successes?
Work: I just completed a big project, moving platform and host for one of our e-commerce stores, without messing up. I consider this a major win because I had to do everything on my own, from re-building the old system on the new framework to converting all the data.

Self: I just completed my third year of walking 7 miles every day. I feel strong, sleep well and I'm way more productive both at home and at work.

Eyght··on What’s it like to live on less than $2 a day?
For about a year I lived off ~$16/week(not including rent) here in Sweden (which is not known as a cheap country to live in). I could just about get by and put away some meager savings. But those savings were continuosly lost to random unforeseen expenses in the $20 range.

In my opinion it's not possible to live like that for any longer stretch of time. As soon as an emergency presents itself, you're wiped out and end up destitute. I had the luck of being young and mentally and physically healthy, and I only had to provide for myself. That being said, it wasn't an easy time for me. 1/10 would not recommend.
