EventHorizon··on After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight
I am curious if this same effect is also seen in those who lost weight via a calorie restricted diet without exercise. It could be plausible that the extreme exercise regimen alone causes the body to become more efficient.

Does anyone know what the blue/red/yellow lines represent?
EventHorizon··on The Linux perf command rocks
Is there a better viewer for lttng than the lttv gui? I got spoiled by QNX's amazing tracing infrastructure and analysis tools and long for something similar on Linux.
EventHorizon··on Hacking the Kinect - How to hack USB device drivers
Unfortunately, no. I worked for places that wouldn't even approve the purchase of the 2.0 beagle. I guess that what happens when the equipment and my pay come from separate budgets. That said one can use Linux as an analyser when windows is the usb-host by running windows in a vm. There are also software analysers that tap into the windows stack available. The Kinect is one of the few peripherals that isn't windows based.
EventHorizon··on Ask HN Hackers: What's R's future?
R is an implementation of S. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S_%28programming_language%29 it has its origins in 1975.
EventHorizon··on How and Why Chrome Is Overtaking Firefox Among Power Users
Chrome appears to automatically add keywords (the site name by default) when it detects something searchable... good to know.
EventHorizon··on Which weight will lift first as the rope is pulled?
Could it not be in a meta stable equilibrium like this if the weights were of equal mass? The numbers of the weights are unit-less. We assume they represent the mass, but for all I know the number is the serial number of the weight.

EventHorizon··on Research In Motion buys QNX
The odd part is that QNX has never really been interested in the mobile-os market. They have mainly been targeting the automotive, defense, industrial and medical verticals.
EventHorizon··on Ask YC/HN: What's a problem, any problem, you'd like to see someone solve?
Thought recognition would be much more useful. And a bit scary.
EventHorizon··on The official term for the smell after it rains
I thought the smell after it rains was ozone, or perhaps something else oxidizing the inside of my nose.

EventHorizon··on Something simple I wish I learned 17 years ago
For me one of the big things that I need to constantly remind myself of is to read what is on the screen, instead of what is in my cache. While this trick may help with testing for equality I'll often mix up the bit-wise and logic operators as well, not so mention the misplaced semi-colon that is so hard to see. Reading what is actually written has saved me numerous errors and is invaluable for code reviews and the like.
