Eurongreyjoy··on Storm Area 51
This will be a case study for media classes to come
Eurongreyjoy··on World’s most frequent flyer has an insane weekly itinerary
The last quote about home being his favorite place to go was sweet.
Eurongreyjoy··on A New Twitter.com
I like this update, it is more clean and user friendly. It is also still friendly to previous twitter users as well.
Eurongreyjoy··on Earth at risk of becoming 'hothouse' if tipping point reached, report warns
I'm also willing to admit that this is probably a case in which whatever system you grew up with, that's what you will prefer and no argument will sway your opinion in the other direction. (Although the metric system does have clear advantages)
Eurongreyjoy··on Earth at risk of becoming 'hothouse' if tipping point reached, report warns
After moving to Europe I am completely on board with the simplicity of the metric system, however I do prefer the Fahrenheit scale for exactly the reason you described above.

A human will face winter weather conditions from 0-32F which converts to negative values on the Celsius scale (not practical).

On the other end of the spectrum for summer time conditions, there is a wider range of values to ascribe to changes in temperature from 60F-100F or approx 16-38C.

Eurongreyjoy··on Cassette tapes are back, kind of
There is a difference between analog and digital. Analog (vinyl) is the original sound while digital takes snapshots of the original sound (albeit at a high rate).

>This means that, by definition, a digital recording is not capturing the complete sound wave. It is approximating it with a series of steps.

>A vinyl record has a groove carved into it that mirrors the original sound's waveform. This means that no information is lost.

Eurongreyjoy··on Cassette tapes are back, kind of
After the recent surge in Vinyl records in the last decade, I knew it was only a matter of time before people thought cassette tapes were "cool" and retro.

However, unlike vinyl which does provide a certain type of depth and tone to the sound of the music, cassettes are simply just lower quality. The only reason for the increase in popularity is strictly nostalgia.

Eurongreyjoy··on Why Russia is openly violating sanctions against North Korea
>Second, Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the political benefits of resisting U.S.-led sanctions policies toward North Korea.

I think this is one of the key reasons behind Russia's actions. It's not that they want to enable a dictator pursuing nuclear capabilities, but rather the political capital gained by opposing all international sanctions or policy brought to other, if it comes from the USA.

Eurongreyjoy··on Facebook face recognition error looks awkward ahead of GDPR
Yes funny how one of the most innovative companies with some of the most intelligent employees in the world, keeps making these simple technical "mistakes" that result in more data being pulled.
Eurongreyjoy··on North and South Korea reportedly set to announce official end to war
Do we think that their ballistic missiles are as capable as they portray in their state run media?

As far as I know, most military strategists doubt the missiles can actually reach US mainland.

As for South Korea, they have always been close enough to suffer catastrophic damages by traditional non-nuclear action, so why are they willing to come to the table now?

Unless they are preemptively trying to avoid retaliation on their own soil because of a US - led strike on North Korea.

Eurongreyjoy··on North and South Korea reportedly set to announce official end to war
I'm curious as to why the motivation now? The West has been placing sanction on North Korea for years with seemingly no effect.

I wonder what role, if any China played in brokering this deal? This is only a report of what is expected to happen at the summit, so we will see if Kim Jong Un will follow through, since his military presence and proximity to South Korea and Seoul has been his best bartering chip.

Eurongreyjoy··on Which is the most ideologically diverse American city?
> Washington DC: The intellectual class in this city is about half conservative/Republican/libertarian and always will be.

While I think the 50 percent figure is high, people tend to only think of DC as a liberal city.

Of course it primarily is, but there is a large population of well-educated conservatives and libertarians living here.

Most of my social circle leans left, but it was always good living in DC to hear different perspectives, rather than shouting into an echo-chamber.

Also an extremely diverse population (51% Black) along with on-going gentrification leads to DC being one of the more intellectually stimulating cities to live in.

Eurongreyjoy··on Another Dead Whale Is Reminder Of Plastic Problem
Do you really think 100% of the plastic we consume makes it to a recycling plant or a landfill?

No matter how efficient waste infrastructure is, the more plastic consumed, the higher chance for pollution, and the higher chance it can end up in the ocean or some other natural environment.

Eurongreyjoy··on Another Dead Whale Is Reminder Of Plastic Problem
The intent of the term is simply to call attention to the problem with a bit of hyperbole.

I don't think many people think you can actually stand on it.

The "scientific term" is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Eurongreyjoy··on Another Dead Whale Is Reminder Of Plastic Problem
Its insane to me that back in the 80's a plastic trash "island" was discovered somewhere between the size of Texas and Russia (depending on estimate). All these years later and there has been almost nothing done to combat the problem.

California is still the only state to completely ban single use plastic bags.

Is the convenience of a super market giving you multiple plastic bags every time you enter worth the damage we are doing to the planet?

Eurongreyjoy··on The Worst U.S. Maritime Disaster in Decades
Tell me about it. You'd think the ocean is a big enough place to avoid accidents, but somehow 16 year olds skippering their parents boats find their way into the path of my Whaler while I quietly sit fishing.
Eurongreyjoy··on The Innovator Who Introduced Cherry Blossoms to the US
Everyone wants their Facebook photo with the Jefferson Memorial in the background. I just wish they were aware enough to obey basic traffic rules and avoid walking in clearly marked bike lanes.
Eurongreyjoy··on The Innovator Who Introduced Cherry Blossoms to the US
When I lived in DC I had very mixed feelings about the impact of the Cherry Blossom Festival. On one hand its creates a ton of Tourism Revenue for the city, on the other the streets and parks become over crowded and you see the increase in litter and pollution at the parks.

I never heard this story and was only familiar with the story the Mayor of Tokyo donated the trees to establish friendly connections with the capital.

A quick search to the Wikipedia page though includes some detail about the Fairchild family.

Eurongreyjoy··on UN: Facebook has turned into a beast in Myanmar
"Well, which one? Some communications are harmful to third parties."

A recent example of this are the ability for conspiracy theorists to communicate news stories after these mass shootings that these attacks were staged or the victims are "Fake". This further pushes harmful propaganda that there is not a real threat to students in schools, and the "third party" children are the ones who suffer from this communication.
