EscapeFromNY··on Proposed SEC order to freeze, repatriate Binance.US assets
There's nothing in the bitcoin whitepaper about getting rich quick. If that's your goal, go ahead and send your money to FTX, Luna, Voyager, or Binance. But that's not my goal. I'm here so I can have self-sovereignty of my money.
EscapeFromNY··on Proposed SEC order to freeze, repatriate Binance.US assets
Binance is an exchange, and exchanges are not needed for cryptocurrency to work. They just make it easier to enter/exit the ecosystem.
EscapeFromNY··on Proposed SEC order to freeze, repatriate Binance.US assets
The USP of cryptocurrency is the ability to self-custody. If you sent your money to a company like Voyager, instead of controlling your keys yourself, you missed the point.
EscapeFromNY··on Proposed SEC order to freeze, repatriate Binance.US assets
Self-custody is the way to go. Send your assets to a private key you control. Not your keys, not your coin. I sleep like a baby no matter what sketchy exchange is in the news any given week.
EscapeFromNY··on "The French Connection" censored and re-edited for "modern sensitivities"
1. It's a 70s movie, not everyone from the 70s is dead

2. Most people do care about respecting the dead. Otherwise there wouldn't be laws against desecrating graves

EscapeFromNY··on uBlock Origin 1.50.0
I understand why gorhill doesn't ask for donations, but I still wish there was some sneaky way I could send him some money anyway.
EscapeFromNY··on Dell in hot water for making shoppers think overpriced monitors were discounted
This is closer to "This monitor is $500, but since you're a good customer and I like you, I'll give it to you for $800"
EscapeFromNY··on The entire finance industry will repeat this quote for a thousand years
The word "bro" predates cryptocurrency.
EscapeFromNY··on Scripts for Btrfs Maintenance
Scrubbing sounds useful. I'll start doing that every so often.

I thought trim was enabled by default (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Btrfs#SSD_TRIM). Does fstrim do something more than that or is it the same thing?

EscapeFromNY··on Scripts for Btrfs Maintenance
Was I supposed to be maintaining my btrfs partition all this time? I just formatted my disk as btrfs when I bought my laptop and haven't thought about it since.
EscapeFromNY··on SEC asks for emergency order to freeze Binance US assets anywhere in the world
Not sure why this is downvoted. It's the official stated position of the SEC. https://youtu.be/hmPpIjfC9DY?t=178
EscapeFromNY··on Apple Releases New Static Linker
Here's a benchmark from the author of the mold linker:

https://twitter.com/nabbisen/status/1665936938837344256

> I installed Xcode 15 Beta to try out the new Apple's linker. It seems that my mold/sold linker is still a bit faster than theirs, but the gap has now reduced to ~60% when linking the sold linker itself on my Mac Studio. Apple's new linker is in the same league as mine. Great job!

EscapeFromNY··on SEC Sues Binance and CEO Zhao for Breaking US Securities Rules
For anyone coming across this later, here's what happened a day after BTCUSD moved "down sharply":

Just your average market fluctuation, or at worst an overreaction and immediate correction. It's best not to try to predict long term market cycles from the 1h candles.

EscapeFromNY··on Phishing Darknet Users for Bitcoins
This is an article about darknet markets, and when I hear "darknet markets" I think of drugs. The impression I get from Bruce Schneier's blog is that other shady stuff like stealing credit cards or murder-for-hire sites (which are all fake) mostly happens on the clearnet. So it was odd to see someone make the casual jump from darknet markets to theft/murder.
EscapeFromNY··on US SEC sues Coinbase, one day after suing Binance
I don't think there's any question who has jurisdiction. The SEC and CFTC have both agreed it's the CFTC:

EscapeFromNY··on Phishing Darknet Users for Bitcoins
If someone is buying weed on a darknet site, would you feel morally justified in stealing from them?
EscapeFromNY··on US SEC sues Coinbase, one day after suing Binance
When was ETH declared as not a security? I don't remember hearing anything about that.

The SEC says only BTC is a commodity:

The CFTC says only BTC is a commodity:

People keep saying that regulation is unclear, when let's be honest, it's perfectly clear. Just not what a lot of people wanted to hear.

EscapeFromNY··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
The focal distance won't be an inch away of course. Every headset I've seen specs for puts the focal distance at 20ft. For normal human eyes, 20ft is optical infinity, so there's no difference optically between looking into a headset and looking at the horizon.

EscapeFromNY··on SEC Sues Binance and CEO Zhao for Breaking US Securities Rules
Right now every state that lets you pay taxes with crypto immediately converts it into USD. So the govt is not taking on any volatility risk.
EscapeFromNY··on Three companies agree to pay $1B to settle 'forever chemical' claims
I can think of plenty of ways that sentence might be weaselly.

Maybe they "synthesized" them, not "manufactured"

Maybe they bought them from some other company (which they might happen to own)

Maybe they manufactured PFAs in general, but not the specific chemicals PFOA or PFOS (it's an awfully specific statement, after all)

Look at these numbers, extrapolate them to the decades they've been in business, and then compare them to DuPont's payment here of $400 million. The numbers aren't even close.

EscapeFromNY··on Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps
I don't follow reddit too closely. But I remember there was another big fiasco a while ago and a bunch of clones/spinoff sites were started. Have any of those survived? (and not been completely overrun with fringe political content that's banned everywhere else)

EscapeFromNY··on Signs of de-dollarisation emerging, Wall Street giant JPMorgan says
Gold? Schiff is selling NFTs now. That's right, NFTs, in 2023.

EscapeFromNY··on Signs of de-dollarisation emerging, Wall Street giant JPMorgan says
USD as a percentage of global foreign reserves has fallen 10% in 20 years... from 70% to 60%. If "de-dollarisation" does happen it's going to take a LONG time.

EscapeFromNY··on Child Labor Is on the Rise
It's basic math, no? Teenagers cannot account for 44.5% of injuries if they don't make up 44.5% of the workforce. Do you believe more than 44.5% of the workforce are teenagers?

Yes, teenagers are more injury prone, but obviously not 44.5% more, and it isn't obviously more impactful than the effects of an older human body deteriorating with age. If you go to the average hospital, are 44.5% of the patients teenagers?

EscapeFromNY··on Child Labor Is on the Rise
Yeah. If a 16 year old gets an internship at a soulless tech/advertising company, HN will cheer and celebrate. But if a 16 year old frames a house, it's [flagged] [dead].
